An Excellent Place to Grow Professionally

Working at Hatley has been a truly rewarding experience. From day one (last July), I felt welcomed and part of a team that genuinely values and supports its people.

I’ve grown both professionally and personally, building strong skills in customer service and inventory management. What stands out most is the collaborative culture everyone’s ideas are heard, and the leadership is exceptional.

Our manager, in particular, has made a huge impact on my experience. She leads with empathy, communicates clearly, and always makes time to support each team member. Her ability to create a positive, motivating, and respectful work environment has inspired me daily and made coming to work genuinely enjoyable.

If you’re looking for a retail role where you can develop, contribute, and feel appreciated, Hatley is an outstanding place to be.

Plus, the company gives you some great discounts at the store.

Hatley was a joke to work for. When hired, the manager talked about how they loved to promote from within. Which is true...only if they like you. If management doesn't like you, you'll be looked over and everything you do will be a problem. Got laid off because people they valued more got moved to my location, and I got cut. 

Asked several times for a raise and was always denied, but expected to be stand-in management when there wasn't one around. DM always told store manager to put off hiring till the last minute, and we never had enough staff, or time to properly train anyone for busy seasons. 

Will send stores 15-20 boxes in shipment at once, and there will never be enough staff to deal with stock quickly. Constantly laying off staff due to budget cuts. But still had money to produce overpriced clothing that no one was buying at full price. Will also hound you about signing people up for newsletters. 

The only nice thing were the people I worked with, the staff discounts, and getting time off whenever I needed it without having to go through a long approval process.

The job itself is simple enough and the customers are quite pleasant to deal with. However, with that being said, both management and HR need substantial improvement. 

The actions of both management and HR are unprofessional, management is allowed to chastise employees publicly in front of other employees, screams at employees and other colleagues, and has no sense of personal boundaries. 

A clique culture is nourished in this company and management encourages this type of behaviour. HR is just as bad as they do nothing to intervene and participate in the clique culture. 

There is no sense of team or team building, everyone works in silos and does what THEY need to do with no thought of helping their colleagues. 

If you are a professional, looking for a professional environment to work in, I would avoid this company at all costs. 

Employees are also underpaid, they don’t take into consideration your experience or work history when hiring, everyone starts at the same salary.

Avoid this company! This company doesn’t appreciate you at all and will never give you a promotion or raise no matter how much you do. The manager can be hypocritical will expect you to do so much but won’t do the same. Will not do any closing shifts (maybe 1 or 2 a month) not even during the busiest time of year (holiday market) where evenings are extremely BUSY and all staff is new seasonal which will then force permanent staff to have to do management duties then will complain that things are not being done right. Management should be available for more than 1 closing shift a week during the holiday market especially on weekends. They send 20 boxes at once so be ready for that. Will get on you for the store not being clean but management will not clean themselves. Will get rid of staff for no reason, will feel used. Also have overheard management talking poorly about head office staff so guess it’s a mess there too. Good luck. 

Hatley used to be a great place to work, but their recent handling with COVID has been awful.note:These are set in place by HEAD OFFICE and not the store managers. 
 Examples:
-staff are not allowed to ask customers to sanitize
-stores are not allowed to post signage regarding capacity limits or rules 
-head office is rewarding verbally abusive customers who complain with discounts
- staff are encouraged not to quarantine tried on items 
-sales bonuses have been revoked, even though sales are beating last years 
-they are currently putting more focuses on collecting emails than staff or customer safety 
-head office employees from QUEBEC are being flown over to ONTARIO to work in close proximity to employees. Employees who express concern are told they are being dramatic.  

Your staff are overwhelmed, over worked, and under paid and under appreciated. Fix it or you’ll loose more. 

Managing this store and team for the last 2 years has been challenging and rewarding. Having an amazing team in place who cared about their employment and respected me as a manager. There are lots of tasks involved in making sure we are at our best for each customer, team was all in. Head office have a great team in place to attend to any of our needs as they arise. Always felt heard and that my concerns and requests were taken seriously. 

I'm only leaving as I was offered a position more specific to my recent degree. 

Great place to learn and grow.  Warm, welcoming and fun loving company culture.  Great sense of team work to develop and distribute the best product, from each department; design, marketing, sales, warehouse, customer service, store locations etc.  Management takes time to nurture strengths and advocates for employees personal growth.  Strides have been made to show staff appreciation and improved staff experience, including consolidating into new facilities with increased employee benefits. Many fun staff events.

A good staff discount is available - and 10$- 25$ gift cards are given if you make targets.   You will work without breaks as not enough staff, and not be paid accordingly in resort stores, and you will also work all weekends and holidays no exceptions as they are open 365 days a year and open 10-9 pm daily  10-7 Sunday.   No work life balance.  I would not recommend working for this company. Management like to make promises at the beginning when negotiating employment that will never come to fruition.  Get offer and promises in writing.

Management has a great way to put the blame on the person who leaves or goes on leave. Somehow it's their failing that they couldn't live up to the ridiculous expectations and conditions. Management can't take responsibility for their own problems. They let go of great staff, and keep one who do a poor job, or are unable to fully complete their job and require a great deal of assistance.
The owners are misogynist, and fueled by greed. They don't value any ideas, because Intimidation and disrespect arent daily management strategies. Good luck recovering from Covid.


My experience with this company was extremely disappointing. The work environment was toxic, with zero respect for employees. In addition, the workplace did not comply with basic hygiene and safety standards: the facilities were dusty, poorly maintained. This created an unhealthy and unsafe atmosphere. I strongly advise against working here unless the company makes serious improvements in cleanliness and employee well-being.
