A tree planter wakes up between 5-6am in their tent, subject to the elements from the start of the day. After eating breakfast and packing lunch, a morning meeting is held before you board the bus to head to the "block". There, you'll be given boxes of saplings and a piece of land to plant them in to replace the harvested forest. By 9, you'll be swimming in bugs, by noon you'll be tired, by 3 you'll be desperate to leave, and at 5 you'll board the bus again and laugh it all off on the way back to camp. The job is paid piece-rate, around 13c per sapling planted, and you can expect to average 2'000 saplings planted daily within a month, about 300$/day. You'll learn that hard work directly translates to greater results, as driven and skilled planters can average 3'000 trees daily and above, meaning higher pay. Management is approachable and friendly, but will not tolerate harassment of any kind - offending planters can expect a warning, or immediate dismissal depending on the severity of their transgressions. The work culture is one of pushing limits and striving, as both you and the company benefit when you plant more trees. Personal bests are celebrated, and the most successful 'highballers' are always sought out by rookies for tips and tricks. Every day is another challenge to surmount, as you're left alone for hours daily with nothing but bugs and trees to keep you company, subject to biting winds, freezing rain, sweltering sun, and uneven, often swampy terrain. Your first season planting will be your crucible. If you can withstand the stress and arduous labor inherent in the job, you'll not only leave richer, but wealthier, as going through the hardships of a planting season will make daily life at home seem a breeze in many ways

The work is tree planting, so given that you know to expect hard work in rough terrain and, at times, extreme weather conditions (cold, thunder storms, heat waves), Haveman provides everything you need. You'll need to bring your own tent and pay camp fees (only 25/day) but you get cooked meals three times a day with generous portions and a great and supportive management team. 

Haveman Brothers is a family operated forestry company based  out of northern Ontario in the Thunder Bay region. My experience with them was as a tree planter in the spring and summer of 2014. Since reforestation as an industry is piece work(paid per planted tree), the most important function an employer can serve is putting you in position to succeed. They kept you as well fed and as comfortable as you can be when you live that deep in the wilderness. The staff was helpful, knowledgeable, and did everything they could to help you plant more trees. The planters who toughed it out and worked hard all went on to make a lot of money and enjoy the atmosphere of the work camps.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Every season with Haveman I’ve had the opportunity to work with some really amazing, hardworking people. The crew becomes family and the community of people I’ve met while working with Haveman is one of the reasons I always return. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of working at Haveman is not related to the company itself, but the conditions of the work (ie: hard land, poor weather, long hours, bugs, etc). Every member of the crew regardless of their position has to face these working conditions and at the end of the day we all get through it together.

Work started at 7 am each day.
i learned punctuality, dedication, time management, working with people, working independently, perseverance, anger management, being helpful to others.
the hardest part of the job was striving to complete your workload despite being exhausted.
the most enjoyable part was not worrying about food and the supervisory team was very dedicated, nice and supportive.

Haveman’s will always have very competitive wages. There are always qualified cooks in the camps that deliver healthy well balanced all you can eat meals. All of their camp sites are outfitted with warm showers, drying facilities, and filtered water.  They have regular days off usually working 5 and 2 or 6 and 1 schedule.

I have worked for Haveman Brothers for several contracts. Cool locations, awesome and approachable staff and more than fair wages. If you can grind out treeplanting or other tough outdoor work, Haveman Bros is the company to do it for. They are a growing company and sure to succeed.

Tree planting is a hard job that is super physically and mentally straining! This company was able to support me through this and push me in my work. Planting is not for the weak!! If you are thinking about getting a planting job, this is the place to do it! Co-workers become family at this job.

very nice family oriented company that treats their workers fairly. lots of remote bush work away from home. sometimes daily pay.. sometimes piece work.
