This organization has strong support from Canadians, it is a foundation build on making notable changes and advancements in research and history for the heart health of all Canadians. I am very proud to be working with such dedicated individuals, who give of their hearts and time so freely to communicate this message, by engaging and supporting their communities in this endeavor.

Working as the Special Event Coordinator for HSF, I am responsible for engaging my communities from Boston Bar to Burnaby in several of our fundraising initiatives. Big Bike Events are our largest community team building programs, that brings teams of individuals out to show their support physically within their community. Corporations love this program as it has a great team building aspect and 1 in 3 Canadians has a heart or stroke story to tell. 

My Own Fundraisers and Special Events are any fundraising initiatives that see hundreds of guests coming together for sports, entertainment and fun in support of the HSF. As coordinator, I seek out events that best fit our mission and engage teams and businesses to come together to show their support and be proactive within their community. My duties are strategic planning, advertising, day of support, media and collateral organization. It is my job to make sure the event ideas stay fresh and that the organizer fundraises in a way that stays within the scope of our vision, values and mission statements.

The organization has a lot of potential but due to problems with upper management and deplorable internal communication there are barriers everywhere you turn. First of all, the organization lacks appropriate structure. If you attempt to make a positive change, typically your suggestion is shot down or not followed through with, which is frustrating and leads to high levels of employee apathy. Additionally, due to some major organizational changes nationally, executive staff and management are unable to focus on the problems within Alberta due to commitments pertaining to national unification, which worsens the problems at home. Once we are operating as a cohesive organization across Canada, I can see it working well, but for the moment this is a stressful and tumultuous environment with heavy workloads and little hope of advancement from within. On the plus side they let you set your own hours within reason, which is nice as it promotes work life balance and allows you to work during your most productive times. Also most of the staff are very nice, which is a major factor in employee retention. 

A typical day at work would involve me assisting customers in finding specific products, answering specific questions, performing transactions, and setting a lasting impression for the customer. Usually at work I learn something new everyday , which could be new product information or even the changes given in a fast past work environment. I have worked in customer service so the workplace culture is always social and everyone around is great with communicating and we are like a family. I would have to say the hardest part of my job would be dealing with very angry customers because you have to find different ways to resolve the issue. A lot of customers wont give you the chance to fix the issue and sometimes they need to vent. As a customer service employee I allow them to get that out and try to approach the situation with calmness and kindness. When situations turn around for a customer or when I am able to help someone with something I feel rewarded. Helping people and interacting with them on a regular basis makes me a better person and makes my job enjoyable.

I would not recommend working here if you want to grow your career or gain new valuable skills. There is no room for a promotion, a raise or professional growth. This organization does not invest it's time to utilize it's employees skills or in their development. 

Pros: Dog friendly office, amount of personal days, flexible hours, free parking, staff, nice big office and kitchen

Cons: Salary (no opportunity for raises or bonus's), extremely administrative heavy, no opportunity for professional growth, poor fundraising data system (multiple tracking systems that are inconsistent and inaccurate), work independently and not with a team, poor company culture (across the country), constant turnover and layoffs (your job is never safe), National office implements decisions and doesn't take on the ground staff feedback into consideration, all about the numbers and not about the donors or spreading valuable information

On a daily basis, I would bank donor dollars, record all database information, answer customer inquiries, keep records of all office supplies, equipment while supervising a number of office volunteers.

I learned to juggle a great many tasks while supervising volunteers in a deadline driven environment.

My co-workers were amazing and were very team oriented with a great drive for success.

The hardest part of the job was when many fundraising programs ran simultaneous giving limited time to handle the administration of the fundraising incentives and receipts.

The best part of the job was the incredible volunteers that would come into the office on a regular basis to assist with the office administration which allowed me to perform my job with success.

They provided sufficient training on opening, closing, and operation procedures, as well as gift wrap training. We were also told not to put up with rude or aggressive customers. "You're volunteering your time to be here. You're not getting paid to put up with abuse. If something happens, let us know and we will handle it." Though, despite the holiday rush, most people were very patient. It was a great experience and I learned a lot about Heart and Stroke. I was also able to work as a supervisor even though it was my first year. They also provide letters upon request for volunteers who work 12+ hours. I would definitely recommend

Working volunteer in Heart and Stroke Foundation was a great challenges and other volunteer community I gave back in the community.Its about how to deal and fellowship with all types of people.The type of worked is more on data entry recording get all the accurate information,gave adviced and help.As well well as office management,including filling,recording handling in and out call and its a multi task work.How to manage and control  time.And work under pressure.My knowledge and training and schooling in Health and Safety help a lot in adopting in actual work office setting.

The benefits are great. We get three weeks vacation and a top notch benefits package. However when it comes to raises... not so much. They do not give raises based on merit, everyone gets the same percentage. As such this is demotivating. Also if you apply for a position once you work here your negotiating power regarding salary is limited to a few thousand dollars of the lowest portion of the pay scale. An outside can negotiate anywhere within the salary range. This is unfair considering the experience an employee brings. Administrative staff are underpaid and advacement opportunites for Adminstraive staff are limited.

HSF was an amazing place to work. The culture is great, it has a family setting and in most departments ego is checked at the door. I was lucky enough to advance within the organization to a position which allowed me to meet colleagues from all over Canada. Working for non-profit is great, but you are sacrificing the salary you find in other sectors. However, they do their best to allow you to develop. Leaving HSF was probably one of the hardest choice I had to make, I only left because I needed a new challenge with my career. I hope one day that I get an opportunity to return to HSF.

A typical day at work involved environmental scan and telephone interviews conducted province wide in Saskatchewan. I learned how focus groups and provincial meets are conducted and arranged. Management was very friendly and I had the opportunity to interact with people who were 55+ and I was fortunate enough to share some wisdom with them. Workplace culture was pretty friendly and everyone was very kind and helpful. Hardest part of the job was my travel time to the job. Most enjoyable part of the job was conducting telephone interviews and learning CPR and also being a part of HSF  was very much fun.
