Herschel Supply Company

There’s lots of good, but also some not so good when it comes to Herschel. 

Overall I’ve had a great experience. I’ve had the opportunity to move up several times. And was given the chance to go through leadership training, which I found was instrumental in my growth. I also make a salary that is in line with my worth and industry standard. 

The company has had some struggles with leadership over the years. I’ve seen a lot of turnover and a few too many layoffs for my liking. There are also fundamental issues that have remained the same over the 5 years I’ve been there. 

The Good:
1) The people. I cannot stress this enough. Come to Herschel and you will absolutely LOVE who you work with. I’ve never worked with a better group of people in all my years. 
2) The culture. This goes hand in hand with the people. But the culture is young and fun, as most companies are these days. 
3) RRSP matching! 
4) Small enough that there is room to move up. 
5) Company size allows for you to actually make a difference is business decision making. 
6) Work life balance is good. I don’t feel overworked. 

The Bad: 
1) Low wages, and lack of growth opportunities. 
2) Very reactionary, instead of looking at the big picture and setting up for future success.
3) Sr Management doesn’t listen to those who are in the day to day and have great feedback and value that could help drive the business into success. 
4) Turnover means increased workload but not an increase in salary. 
5) Company structure doesn’t allow for a ton of opportunity for middle management to learn from leaders. Not many directors, so Managers are reporting into VP’s. 
6) A boys club. 

All in all. In the 5 years I’ve been with the company, not once have I hated my job. I’ve actually never liked working somewhere more. 
Corporate Retail is going to be the same no matter where you go. Take the good with the bad and find what you really want and what you’re after. 



Probably one of the best retail environment I've worked at. Entire management team is well equipped and knowledgeable, while still being laid back and relatable. No intimidation/scare tactics by managers, Store manager is very understanding and easy-going. Lots of big personalities amongst coworkers, everyone gets a long and doesn't feel "clique-y". No commission or personal sales quotas, so its a pressure-free environment and you can actually feel good about selling & not hounding customers for a sale. The company as a whole has a very through training process and you really get to know the ins and outs of the brand and the products & can speak on it with confidence. Retail space is well designed, you can feel proud to work in it every day. 40% off discount, lots of opportunities to grow. 10/10 would recommend to all.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There wasn’t really a standout positive aspect for me.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of working at this company was the unprofessional behavior of the manager. Even minor mistakes were escalated in public, and instead of offering constructive feedback, the manager singled me out in front of other employees, creating a toxic environment. This lack of respect and support made the job extremely difficult.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment felt very high-pressure, with a lack of open communication. The culture was more about fear of making mistakes than fostering teamwork or growth. Overall, it didn’t feel supportive or collaborative.

Company grew quite a bit in my time there but resources go to teams that do not necessarily need it.  Leadership is hit or miss, some are great, and some do not treat everyone quite the same and can be quite immature (though they are competent in their own right).  Lots of great people to work with otherwise, and they did work to diversify the workplace from being a boys club.  Some nice perks like free food once in a while and solid discounts, so if you like the brand and industry it could be worth it just for that (for a little while).  Can learn a lot having to do more work than expected but little chance for advancement, and in most cases it is just the rich getting richer and you would have to wait for someone to leave the company before you can advance.

Great place to work for anyone who loves the fashion / streetwear retail industry. The colleagues there all do. Lots of opportunities to meet people in the company through Friday wine socials, breakfast in the cafe, at the food trucks nearby, etc.

Some colleagues are more closed off and more difficult to warm up to (as with most companies in the fashion industry)

Herschel offers no job security. Very frequent lay offs. The management make wild plans for expansion that go against all available data, hire people and then abruptly lay them off with no notice when their plans fail. This happened twice in the few months I worked for them. They emailed people on vacation and told them they were let go. The management can not make plans and leverage the companies strength, they're all business blind optimists. 

Herschel was a fun place to work with your friends. It's a great place to try everything and cut your teeth, unfortunatey definitely not the place for leadership training or advanced career training. Work here for a few years to get a varied amount of experience under your belt and then move somewhere where you can find growth

Typical daily life will vary drastically pending on which department you are in and under which manager.  Great to gain experience, but not for much further than that.

I was with Herchel for 5 years and enjoyed every minute of it. This was my first real career and it allowed me the experience to gain future positions at other great companies.

I managed to find a great mentor while I was there and he continues to guide me throughout my career.

Very bad location to work in, no communication, terrible ownership of company. I made the biggest mistake of my life in starting work at Herschel.......one of those "too good to be true" situations.
