Highview Residences

I have been employed in health care for over 18 years with LHSC, with most of this time in the OR. 

 I wanted to pursue a field with more patient interaction and as well as the flexibility to work in other provinces. After obtaining my PSW certificate, I was offered five positions as an PSW in two weeks and settled on Highview Residences.

I had the overwhelming sense of a family atmosphere. Not only does Highview convey the importance to the residents well being but believe me they care about the growth of their employees!
There are constant opportunities to sharpen and diversify your skillsets as a PSW and often emails to keep you abreast of internal news about the home.

I have always had a clear and direct communication about any concerns with Mgnt.

There are in my short experience with Highvew Residences highs and lows, when a resident smiles after you have helped them with their meal, assist with their clothes or to the bathroom. The only drawback would be supplies in respect to food, shortage of cereal, juice, etc. this could be external issue.

I would highly recommend Highview Residences as a PSW housekeeper, or cook. if you want to work with very motivated and talented staff and mgnt. This is the place!

Work, listen to report when coming on shift to understand changes for every resident. Check-in with all residents and know where everyone is and how they are doing. Start medication for dinner, assist with eating for those who can’t eat on their own or only need to be cued. Help them feel independent as much as they can be. After dinner, be with the residents who need “extra love”. As we are a facility for dementia, our residents “sundown” and forget place, time, where or who we are and need a lot of communication to feel safe. Medication is then given before bed to some and not all residents, depending how or if they need assistance to have a good sleep at night. I have learned more and more about dementia and see all different behaviours. We treat all of our residents as if they are, our family. We have a great management team who support us. All staff are pleasant to work with. The hardest part of our job is learning everything we can for each individual and trying to assist them to make them understand how they feel in each moment. I love to come to work everyday as our residents show us love and appreciation. They know we care.

What i value most about working at Highview Residences is its philosophy of respect, independence, and quality of life for Residents. I like the fact that their focus is not just on care tasks, but on promoting comfort, choice, and well-being. This aligns strongly with my personal values in care

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I feel the most stressful part is when several Residents require attention at same time. However, i manage this by staying organized, prioritizing tasks, communicating with my team, and always keeping Resident safety and dignity first.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Highview Residences is a collaborative environment where coworkers help one another. Also, the Management is approachable and supportive.
The culture strongly emphasizes Love, Kindness, patience, and truly caring for Residents as individuals, not just patients.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day at Highview involves providing person-centered care, especially supporting Residents living with dementia.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Highview Residence is a good working environment, employees is treated like a  member of family, the admin are really helpful and have positive attitude. Good service and quality care. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working in a dementia care is stressful . Sometimes short staff makes it more hard specially if there  are a lot of behaviour. In those situation sometime the admin also comes to help with the care.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I observed  good working environment. focus most of the time of wellbeing of residence and workers. We collaborate with fellow PSW regarding the plan of care and maintaining good workplace relationship.   Everyone respects everybody's right and belief. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Starts shift usually by endorsement from previous shift, getting special plan of care like bath or shower for the day schedule. Checking resident and greeting them.

I have for the better part working the midnight shift, my responsibilities during the night commences with cleaning various areas. As well check with residents on an hourly basis and reposition every two hours on those that are not independent.
Set the dining room and prep the kitchen for morning breakfast. Be conscious in giving assistance to your partner and their residents. Closely monitor the in room cameras and alarms.

The  Management have always been accessible and are always seeking difficulties you may have and any constructive ideas or situations you may encounter. 

The culture is that it  supports involvement and provides a positive vibe. Some of my colleagues are actually my friends. I feel there is transparency where all team members  know where they stand and understand Highview's  mission and values.

You get to apply your mind independently, drawing extensively from both your residual and active knowledge of the work. The team relies on one another to function effectively, and this entails that everyone's view on a matter is factored into account when analyzing or deriving a result or an approach. The Management is jovial and friendly and encourages you to be yourself.  Soon after starting work with Highview, you get to own and feel that sense of partnership that enables you to aply yourself fully and get appreciated and rewarded for it. You will have days off to rest, unwind and recuperate because that is critically important for general effectiveness. But ironically, your off days would likely turn to be the hardest part of the job, as you will crave on such off days to be at workplace. The most enjoyable part of the job is being part of a team that is mutually respectful of its members, and constantly interacting with one another to fastiduously generate effective results for the residents.

This was the worst job I've had in my life. They do not care about the staff or the residents. They didn't have housekeeping until long after covid. The COO has no care for quality, only for business. There is minimal supplies, support and retained staff. Meetings are conducted in the kitchen, which is in clear earshot of residents and guests. They claim to focus on dementia care, however they do not have the proper resources to administer it. The Montessori is not developed properly. The nurses have given medication to the wrong patient because they are not trained. This job is terrible. You'll be expected to do everyone's job and be paid less than $18 to do so. Work in public health, at least they are regulated to a standard that seems far better than here.

At Highview Residence, a typical day involves collaborative teamwork, ensuring residents receive the best care. I learned the importance of empathy and patience. Management prioritizes respect and is always friendly, creating a supportive environment. The workplace culture promotes kindness and teamwork, making it easier to face challenges. The hardest part of the job can be dealing with emotional situations, yet the most enjoyable aspect is forming bonds with residents and seeing their smiles. Overall, it’s a fulfilling experience where respect and support shine through.

Highview offers an excellent work environment, fostering a strong sense of teamwork and support among its staff. While the daily routine may be somewhat predictable, the camaraderie among colleagues is truly commendable. However, it can be challenging at times, with a multitude of responsibilities falling on just a few individuals, from caregiving to household tasks and activities. Increasing the staff numbers would not only enhance resident safety but also allow for more attentive care and a less hurried atmosphere. Despite this, Highview remains a rewarding place to work, where dedication and compassion thrive. Highview offers a warm and supportive community environment for residents, with dedicated staff who prioritize their well-being. The facility provides a range of services and activities tailored to meet the diverse needs and interests of its residents, promoting social engagement and overall quality of life.



I'm very much grateful to have been able to spend my school placement here at Highview Residences. This facility has indeed offered flexibility and compassion as I try to find a healthy school-work-life balance. It feels good to work and learn in a place that views us as humans. As a GIP student, interacting with the residents and staffs here enable me to grow and learn new stuffs. Truly it helped me be my most productive self and hugely contributes to my happiness at work. There may be challenging times such as short staffs and outbreaks, but the management really did a great job in balancing workloads, so that no one feels overwhelmed, even at busy times. But overall, this is a nice working environment! After graduation, I will really apply for a position in this facility!
