***It should be noted that this is for The Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites on Wellington Rd.***
•While my coworkers are great, it’s a unionized site so there’s some job protection (although no guarantee of hours), and the job itself is perfect for me (task wise), other than having a benefit package, and that the employer contributes $0.53 for every hour worked to an rrsp or tfsa (after 1 year of service, employee’s choice), those are the only positive things I have to say! Not to mention the positive things are the result of being unionized and having a contract  - were it not a unionized site, there is little doubt those “perks” wouldn’t exist!
• The housekeeping manager is the worst manager I have ever worked for in my life (very poor people skills, has been demeaning and condescending to staff members, cannot handle conflict appropriately, does not speak in a professional manner. When she is offsite, she does not respond or acknowledge text or phone messages, etc, etc, etc!!).
• Anyone below the position of manager is making minimum wage or just slightly above (no one makes over $15!), most positions were paid under $12/hr before the mandatory minimum wage increase!).
 • Dept managers have been revolving for about 11/2 yrs now, including GM, although current GM appears to be really great so far!
• New owner believes it is fair to expect ppl to work for minimum wage, and profit off the sweat off their backs! It gets extremely busy, so we are expected to work at an extremely fast rate to accommodate guests who arrive early, or in very large groups. 
• Our benefits premium increased by approx 40% when the new owners took over, which is significant for minimum wage earners, especially when most ppl are lucky to work 20 hours a week! 

When push comes to shove, there are much easier minimum wage paying jobs, that are less physically intensive and less stressful! Why work for an employer that doesn’t recognize or appreciate how hard you work for such low pay! It is quite obvious he believes that employees are dispensable and easily replaceable. He does not appreciate the hardworking and dedicated staff that truly care about the hotel and the job they do, having several that have been there 20+ years. Rather than compensate appropriately, he believes if you’re not happy with such low pay, you should just quit, and he’ll find the next person who needs a job so desperately that they will happily work for minimum wage, until they realize how hard the job truly is!

I had worked as a guard here as both a Lifeguard/Supervisor. My time guarding here had been interesting, to say the least with multiple changes in the workplace and management over the years. I have seen this place at it's highest and lowest points, through the good and the bad. If you were to ask me what it's like currently, I would say it's in the middle. Here's why. 

The pool itself isn't too bad, but there is a lot of maintenance around the place that needs to be done. It constantly has issues such as waves not working, the slide lights not working properly causing major issues with slide traffic, the bottom of the pool starting to crack and flake into the water and lights that tend to burn out without being replaced. Not to mention a majority of pump system components are way overdue for replacement or constantly breaking down. 

Management, in terms of the people who work there, are very good people and generally will be very helpful with most needs you have but don't expect anyone to know anything about how the pool operates or how to fix things as they will expect supers to know that. One thing I wish we had here was a proper Pool Manager who would oversee the guards and have proper Pool Ops certification to train people. 

Co-workers for the most part are great to hang out with and are mostly College/University and High School students looking to make money during the school year. Schedules are usually pretty good for hours in terms of part/full time. Time off can be hard to get especially during stat holidays so be prepared to ask for it early. Also, the pay is lower than most other pools in the city at a near minimum, even for a super/head role.

So who would I recommend work here you ask? Well...
- If you're a student looking for part-time work and don't care about the pay, I would recommend it.
- If you're someone who has lots of experience looking to get good pay, I would not recommend it. 
- If you're looking for people to easily bond with and make friendships with that last a lifetime, I would recommend it. 
- If you're looking to be super, but can't handle chemical tasks or dealing with patrons, would not recommend it. However, if you can deal with these things and don't mind the pay. go for it!

A typical day walking into work could start off with resetting a room that has to go for a meeting again tonight. Today is also a day that you have to work as housekeeping, porter, and maintenance because they are not scheduled tonight. Then making sure the lounge is stocked with liquor. Next I try to cover breaks to get those out of the way for the night (the front desk staff and the lounge). Then I will usually have a couple room services through out the night to deliver. Then do call backs to make sure their dinner was perfect. I try to grab a meal in between there for about 5 minutes then back to setting meeting rooms for functions that go tomorrow. There will probably be a couple deliveries to bring up a couple blankets, microwave, fridge, toothbrush, new remote for the TV or some guest concern to deal with. I have to also make sure I keep an eye on any staff that is working during my shift to follow up with them and see how their work is coming along.

I've learned that not all days will be fun but the days are what you make them. Positive attitude when working in this industry or any industry really matters because you can be so easily drained if you do not roll with the punches.

The hardest part of my job is when a manager does not do their part during the morning shift and then expect the night staff to pick up the slack. For example to help save on hours the morning manager will call off an employee for the morning but then will not cover what needs to be done for that person. They will go into their office and do their work and then leave the work for the night staff that's coming to do everything themselves. What makes it worse is the fact that this person now has to do the morning persons job, his job and any other persons in that 8 hour shift. It really is more annoying and stressful than anything else.

Management for the most part does their best but when it comes to the everyday small concerns that guests really need dealt with the managers drop the ball.

The most enjoyable part of my job are the people. The core staff is great which is why this place is such an awesome place to work for.

Working here was less than a blast for me& my fellow housekeepers. Not only are we understaffed for the duration of the summer, but our workload is ridiculous. Management seems to think they only have to follow one side of the Collective agreement, the parts that benefit them, and that the rest of it is invalid. Good luck trying to get a day off, even when requested, they will "misplace" or "Misfile" your request paper and you'll be stuck working. They schedule their "Part time" employees during the summer months for 7+ days. Some have done 14 day stretches without a day off& only receiving 4 days of straight overtime pay when its illegal to work an employee more than 6 days straight without a full day of rest. On top of that, you'll have to track your own hours because this company is quite good as messing up paychecks & miscalculating hours.

During the winter, they act like they own you. It doesn't matter if you're sick& have doctors notes, they expect you to be willing and able to work no matter what the situation. The company got bought out recently& the pro's of the job started to decline. They took away our lunch meals& replaced them after a month of us having to bring our own (though in the collective agreement it says we are entitled to one hot meal a day)  with the same dry sandwiches& watered down soup every day. The place is disgusting. You get sent into 'bed bug' rooms without warning, get in trouble for not having something that's never been cleaned before you came clean during inspections. Management has her favorites. Not everyone is treated the same. 

The best part about the job is the coworkers. They make the place tolerable. Aside from that, prepare to have your feelings hurt& be talked down to like you're owned by the company every single day you work there. You'll have lots of "sitting on the side of the tub" cries. I promise.

•	Overseeing all aspects of financial control in the Hotel business.
•	Recording of money received and paid out. Preparing, maintaining and reconciling all three legers (guest ledger, city ledger and deposit ledger), all credit cards and company bank accounts
•	Preparing deposits on daily basis 
•	Reconciling  and inputting daily sales 
•	Processing bi-weekly payroll using Pay Specialist and ADP software; keeping records of employee’s vacations
•	Responsible for accounts payable & accounts receivable
•	Responsible for inventory count of all departments on monthly and quarterly basis
•	Posting all GL, journal entries on monthly basis.
•	Doing month-end closing and submitting data to corporate office 
•	Analysing P&L and giving explanation of any critics. Doing correction or adjustment on P&L if any 
•	 Providing financial, and strategic support to the business
•	Actively involved in process of hiring, firing and training employees
•	Preparation of management information from source data
•	Producing monthly management accounts, budgets, forecasts & VAT returns
•	 Presenting monthly results, budget variances and ad-hoc analysis
•	Overseeing internal financial controls
•	 Providing financial overview to all departments head on monthly departments head meeting
•	Producing meaningful commentary and analysis of financial data
•	Managing a 55-person team, encouraging personal and professional development of the culturally diverse department
•	Reviewing new & existing business models and capital appropriation requests
•	Identifying and developing controls and processes to ensure all risks and opportunities are highlighted
•	Compiling and presenting detailed monthly reports to the General Manager.
•	Preparing internal and external financial and tax statements for review by corporate and external Audit team

My typical day at work as a house keeper looks like this:
-receive room list from boss
-gather supplies
- set up my housekeeping cart (gather more supplies)
-check my list to see what rooms I can start cleaning ( when people have left) 
-start room ( empty dirty laundry and garbage, restock supplies, dust  bedroom and living area, clean wash room and vaccume
-take out garbage and recycling at the end of the day or when it fills up
- throw dirty linens down the shoot periodically or at break times

Working at the Holiday Inn Hotel as a maid has taught me to be a more tidy person and how to be organized it has also trained me better to think about what it would be like to be in someone else`s shoes. 

I feel that the management in my main department needs a bit of improving their communication skills and a better understanding and a shown appreciation for it`s employees. 

My co- workers are nice ladies and I generally have a good time working with them. They are from all backgrounds and the diversity makes it that much more interesting.

The hardest two things about my job is being in a room cleaning by myself. I feel that I am more of a social person, so being behind the scenes in a customer based company is a struggle to find the enjoyment. I also don`t have any hours stability or guarantee. The shifts will usually not be full 8 hour shifts, A look back at my schedule for example: last week I relieved 5 shifts and one was cancelled the day before and the week before that I had one 5 hour shift. This makes my life frustrating and hard to plan how to spend finances and save for college to better my education.  

The two most enjoyable parts about working at the holiday inn as a maid is 1. even though there is a small tax, There is meals provided at most of the break times. It`s usually left overs from events but the chefs are really good at their jobs and its always tasty and 2. I get to watch television when it is not as busy, as I am cleaning my rooms.

I would like to start out by saying that I absolutely LOVED my job at the holiday inn express and suites.. they fired me for “just” cause and now will not return my tools saying they are not existent in that hotel.
The hotel is dated and falling apart. Every employee there is unhappy and the main reason I was unhappy was how I was treated. I was looked at more like a contractor then I was an employee. Yes there where times when I could not fix something like a major electrical issue but for the most part I did what I could.
It was when management would say to me (your here for 8 hours so why do you care what your doing) that’s a good question. And the answer to that is.
I am bending over backwards to fix things in this place that far surpass a “maintenance” roll and I was very unappreciated for the work I put in. When I first started there I was told it was “general Maintenance” taps, drains, minor electrical, A/C units etc. What it ended up being was. Fully gutting bathrooms with major water damage, full cement jobs not just meaning filling a small hole. Etc..
I ask about a raise and they laugh at me. 
I go in on days off or extra time and they again just laugh when I need to take a day off. 

Management there is pretty well non existent. Go to them with an issue about another staff member and the GM says, sounds like you two have some sexual tension and you should work that out yourself.

Unless you are going to go to work with your nose to the floor every day and not talk to anyone, I wouldn’t work here.

The owner and general manager of the Holiday Inn & Suites Calgary Airport North on 20 Freeport Place NE, Calgary, is very unethical to say the least. They hire shuttle drivers on minimum wage, make shuttle drivers do housekeeping, security, maintenance and front-desk job and terminate shuttle driver whenever they want to without a proper reason. The owner is a lawyer that's why they think can get away with whatever they do. They schedule everyone on eight hours shift but cut 30 minutes for break! It is kind of stealing money from employees by cutting 30 minutes every shift as they could schedule people on 8.5 hours shift. Not every employee at font office department get paid same hourly wage although everyone is doing same type and amount of job so pay discrimination is visible. They pay on pay check so you have to deposit it manually and they hope that you forget about your pay check so they don't have to pay you because they never call you when your pay check is ready. No uniform is provided for doing the job which is a security threat and no proper training either. During COVID-19 they laid off many people and gave everyone a letter of termination instead of layoff notice so they have no obligation to re hire you! That shows how nasty minded they are who doesn't care at all for their employees. Employment Standard Alberta and Alberta Labour Relation Board should audit this greedy and unethical business owner and manager on a regular basis.

A typical day at work starts at 8 am, grab our carts full of sheets, towels, shampoos ect. We has 1/2 hour to clean a room which includes cleaning bathrooms, making beds to dusting and vacuuming/washing floors.Once finished the list of rooms that was given to you its now time to restock your cart and have the supervisor check all your rooms before you're allowed to leave. Sometimes we had extra duties such as wash pool floors, empty garbages, wash walls in hallways and stairways.

I learned that some people can be really messy and rude for such silly reasons :(. Complaining just to receive a discount or a free room because they can/

The best part of my  job was the management. The staff at the holiday Inn was excellent, I got along with everyone  which also made it enjoyable to go to work everyday. i had no complaints there.

What made the job stressful was the amount of cleaning we had to do in such little time. A lot of people think housekeeping is easy but it really isn't, it really takes a toll on your body.

I also worked in the breakfast bar which included preparing breakfast  for the guest such as scrambled eggs, pancakes sausages and much more. Shifts started it 4:45am so I was pretty much awake before the guest and around 6:45am the doors would open and it would be time to serve the guest.

I really enjoyed my position as Catering Manager and looked forward to coming to work each day. There were always new clients with different requirements, such as corporate meetings and weddings and social/holiday events. I enjoyed creating long term working relationships with many clients and receiving kudos for a well organized event. 
The one thing I really learned was how to listen and when to offer my advice, while always keeping the budget and sales projections in mind. I learned how to tactfully "upsell" to generate more revenue for the company. I enjoyed being an integral part of a productive team with my co-workers in other hotel departments, as well as leading my own staff on the catering team. 
Catering events come with its own unique challenges, and I learned to become very resourceful to overcome these challenges. 
I loved every aspect of the job, but I think the hardest challenge would be negotiating with clients who pushed too hard for better deals - even after the event was over! I never lost a client over this challenge however and everyone was happy in the end. 
I left the position because an opportunity came up to go back to school to obtain my ECE certificate to work in a daycare with children.
