Horizon Drilling

At one point, I did enjoy the people and the company until they started to restructure. Then the trickle effect happened. They have no experienced people in their office, lost a great personnel team, hired an HR manager with absolutely no oilfield experience, coordinators who don't even call the hands, and confidentiality is a joke. AM may have worked in the field, but he has no idea how to run an office. He is a poor excuse for an operations manager and has turned that place into a disaster.

Some advice for upper management. Learn how to treat the employees you do have, train them properly to your standards.  Promote from within, reach out to your teams, see what makes them happy, what they'd like to change, where they're struggling and why? Invest in your people, the money spent on hiring new employees without experience will cost you much more in the long run. 

I have worked for numerous drilling contractors and this company does not care about you. You're a number, a body and you're disposable. I think any former employee of Horizon would agree.

COO - fail, CEO - fail, VPs - fail, Ops Managers - fail.

Only way Ops managers succeed is by being "yes men", taking credit for everyone elses hard work OR being related to the CEO...

Credit is not given where credit is due, especially if you're not part of the "boys club". You're expected to work your butt off, overtime, etc and IF you're compensated or rewarded for it, it's pennies. 

ALL the good ones (ie, the ones who actually knew what they were doing) they've had either the sense to leave or were let go because they didnt want to properly compensate them.

This company lacks moral, sense of teamwork, and respect for its employees. The only bond between employees was the complete lack of respect/care for the OPs Managers and Upper management...that and how much they hated their jobs.

Typical day at work: there was a backlog of safety sheets to enter into the database, so all of use clerical/administrative staff were busy entering those all day for the most part. What I learned: I don't really enjoy the repetitiveness of data entry, nor the commute time, nor having an office to myself. Management is friendly, and would check on staff once a day. Workplace culture: work was paramount, but there were fun outings as well. Hardest part of the job: data entering and seeing how much was still left. Most enjoyable: outings were fun and educational.

come in connect pipe, and clean rig, make meals for driller and help derrickhand mix. or trip out or in which is all you do on your full 12 hour shifts exceept for flow check.

hardest part would be the weather, working in -45 isnt considered fun. most co-workers were good, I get along with pretty much everyone. some where mean to my dummy roughneck and made him cry but i kept him ina a normal state of mind and didn't let anyone pick on him for no reason, I stick up for my crew, out there its our second family from home. 

Best part is either sleep or coming home :D

Great company, great management. I filled in on several rigs and I found I was a good fit with some crews and not so much with others. However, the office goes out of their way to help you if you are a good worker and I found a great rig with a great crew.

I will also mention that problems are fixed very quickly. One of my pays didn't go in my account in error, and within a couple hours of notifying the office I had my money. Things happen, but it's how they're fixed is when you see how good a company is.

If you've never worked on a rig before, you better be in shape!

Stay away from this company unless you enjoy being marginalized, micro managed, and made to feel less then what you are.  Management has no clue how to treat employees and prefer fear and intimidation as the way to treat employees.  
HR is now made up of people who have never even worked in the industry ( except for one and she is a good employee) and managers are only there for the paycheque.  
If this business is still around for much longer I would be surprised!

I worked there 3 years no advancement not willing to help a guy advance, glove policy and they dont want to pay for the gloves impact only, short notices for work, work everyday, could be weeks on end, benefits end after 2 weeks of not working, short notice for layoffs never know if theres going to be more work after the hole your drilling. Harassment on day one and continues indefinately, even from rig managers. No notice for working extra hours, watch your hours carefully short hours if you stay extra to help finish setting up on rig moves. 

Hard work and dedication applies as for any drilling rig contractor. The managements a joke, people are being fired or replaced constantly for no apparent reason, just they don't like you or they have a friend to replace your position. If you get injured working for this mob you mind as well forget the future with this company because they will try and ruin you. Stay away go work for any other contractor!

Good management in the field but very poor leadership in the workplace maybe that was just the specific crew on rig 10 but I felt almost like I was living an ex con lifestyle out there having no positive energy on the team makes for crazy long hours especially tripping out having to pull slips all day feeling your the only power of the team

Drill Baby Drill, if you're not afraid of long days and some of the hardest work you'll do in your life with the addition of working in some very remote areas then this is the job for you. I have had the opportunity of working with some stand up guys with this company and was able to learn a lot of fundamentals that helped with my new career as a millwright.
