Horizon North Camps & Catering

My experience with Horizon North began on a negative note. I was only given my contract to sign after I had already started working, and the company refused to honor the pay rate agreed upon during my hiring process. Instead, they renegotiated the rate in a way that felt like a “take it or leave it” ultimatum. This was my first red flag and set the tone for the rest of my employment.

Training and Management

There was no proper training provided. The attitude was, “watch what we do and figure it out,” regardless of your prior experience or background. Suggestions or feedback were unwelcome, which discouraged me from speaking up about poor management practices or micromanagement. The expectation was that after three days, you should know everything, and you were held fully accountable as if you’d been in the role for years. There was little to no understanding or support from management, and feedback was not valued-a sentiment echoed by others who described the environment as micromanaged, with little room for feedback or innovation.

Workplace Culture and Turnover

The culture was tense and unwelcoming. High turnover was evident; nearly everyone on my team was new or had been there for less than six months, which speaks volumes about the work environment. The focus seemed to be on keeping the client happy at all costs, sometimes even at the expense of employee well-being. Loyalty and “drama” toward the client appeared more important than actual job performance.

Compensation and Benefits

The main positives were the money (for the long hours), free meals, and accommodation with good Wi-Fi. However, despite the demanding 12-hour shifts on a 4-weeks-in, 2-weeks-out rotation, I found out that Horizon North pays among the lowest rates compared to other contractors on site. This, combined with the draining work environment, made the job unsustainable for the long term.

Conclusion and Advice for Future Employees

If you are thinking about working with Horizon North at Gooselake, my advice is to proceed with caution. While the pay and benefits like free accommodation and meals are attractive, the lack of proper training, poor management, and high turnover create a stressful and unsupportive work environment. Make sure to clarify your contract terms and pay rate upfront, and be prepared for a demanding job where your experience may be overlooked.

Ultimately, if you value a workplace that listens to employees, provides adequate support, and fosters growth, this may not be the right fit. However, if you are looking for short-term work primarily for the financial benefits and can handle a tough environment, it could be worth considering. Always weigh the pros and cons carefully before committing.


Poor training at Front Desk for new employees. The trainer is stressed, cero patience. The management expects you to learn a whole new company system in few days. The trainer made me look like a fool, like stupid, he preached me all day long every day. I was expecting my passwords and system ID to log in for 3 days. IT sent a letter with my passwords and instructions but my trainer only showed me my passwords, I wasn't aware that there was a 2 page instructions for me. The I couldn't log in until the L&L manager called them. Then IT forgot to grand me access to internet....training was a chaos! I was preached by IT and it was not my fault. Very frustrating. Every body was frustrated with every body. I talked to my manager and she said I should fight my trainer back. He shouted to me in front of a Guest and in front of the H.K. manager. Very disappointing. This guy breaks the Harassment company policy every day, and calls a kitchen worker "StephaCACA" because he pretends he can't pronounce her name. Disgusting guy! If not for this guy, I will have stayed there; but I don't want to have a coworker that is the best employee and is prepotent, impatient, stressed and shouts every time he losses it.

I worked here to get some experience in a camp attendant position. There wasn't a lot of guidance and I ended up having to track down the manager a lot to ask questions about standards and practices. Once I got the hang of it I found it enjoyable, I was trusted to do my job and was left on my own for a large part of the day, but began to realised how little I was actually getting paid for my time away from home. They start at minimum wage and there is no raise system in place so unless you work your way up the ladder, you're going to be at minimum wage your whole time there. When minimum wage went up in bc, hours were cut, making the pay less than it was before the wage increase which was EXTREMELY frustrating. This also made the staff force a revolving door with a lot of entry level students or people new to the role (like IW as when I started) , meaning someone at all times wasn't able to do their job to the fullest, not by their own fault though as they were in training or still learning.

Tldr: Made some good friends but have moved on due to pay and having to "cover" for new people constantly. 


loved the camp I worked on due to the family environment. Yet felt just like a number a lot of the time. Our staff dorms were pitiful as every other dorm for the clients were very nice with their own bathrooms. We got an old trailor that was used for storage. The wages were very low and lots of the time you worked overtime and didn't get paid because the office was so un organized and rude to the staff that held their company together. I would not work for this company again. The pros of this was walking away and meeting beautiful people that turned into your family. I got to meet a lot of the clients that I walked away with as being a friend. The environment on camp was as positive as it could be. I will miss the people I grew to love, yet I am looking forward to better wages, feeling part of something more and overall knowing that I am not just a number to a company but part of a team.

A typical day at work would always keep me busy throughout my whole shift which would very much pass the time faster. I learned how to work in a secluded environment (dealing with being away from home for weeks on end), my pre-existing cooking/kitchen skills continually get improved. Management can be very understanding but they also need to improve on their communication throughout the office. The hardest part about the job was being away for many days at a time, not having a regular social life and not being able to enjoy the company of my friends/family any given day or night. The most enjoyable part about the job to me would be that I got the opportunity to meet new people and make friends consistently because of the traveling and different camp locations.

I thoroughly enjoyed the people I worked with. Everyone was very kind and attentive.

I lost my job with them due to being a temp when a previous member of staff wanted their job back.

I was told half an hour after I had left work that I was not to come back.They should have told me right before the end of the day to give me a chance to at least get my things. When I went back to get my things and my co-workers were oblivious to the fact that I was not working there anymore. 

So all in all, Great People. I understand that because I was the lowest on the ladder, I was the one who was asked to leave. 

I just wish that the process of ending everything would have been more respectful and taken my feelings into account. I felt very disrespected.

work place was a fabulous 5 star type hotel. 
Facility was a lack for nothing.
 Clients were vey nice as well as respectful. 
My managers were hardworking and doing the best they can for the contract.

The work  was hard but delightful and awe inspiring by the commitment  of my colleagues. A "family like" atmosphere among us, and there was nothing we wouldn't do for each other!

I have learned how very important it is to develop a team work culture with respect and dignity for each other. That this is the way for everyone's progress as well as the progress of our company (Horizon North). I shall always remember my former colleagues as well as very thankful to Horizon North for the opportunity to work at one of their very best run facilities.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The Kitchens, and Co-workers, the stuff I learned while working, and also the Head Chef and his Sous Chef were also helpful all together was an amazing environment to work in

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The long 10 hour drive to get to the Bus that took me to Camp, and the Cost of staying in a room when I was going to work and after I went home from work

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Was amazing, had everything you needed in the camp, pool and game room, Work out areas and grab n go area was good too

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Was good,  I love working in the kitchen, and this was the biggest kitchen I have ever worked in

I honestly loved working here. It’s definitely not for everyone, if you enjoy long hours and a really fast paced environment then I’m sure you would like it. Although currently they are very understaffed so stress levels are very high. I huge downside of the job is being very underpaid for the amount of work you’re doing and zero overtime pay. It’s a 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off position with 12 hour shifts and an included hour break. So 154 paid hours. If you live in Sudbury or the Sault then travel is included. Food and lodging is included as well, so the only thing you really have to worry about is work. Although if you are a woman and feel uncomfortable around men then it definitely isn’t the job for you seeing as how it’s a solid 95% men.

The staff you work with but there's nothing better than to be bullied lied to treated like you didn't even know your job 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Being belittled nit picking bullying managers all were there for them selves they cried team work but treated staff like they were nothings

Bert toxic managers treated staff with disrespect but they all lied right to your face

Stressfully you were always walking on egg shells
