Hostopia

I worked at Hostopia for over a year, and it was a great place to be.  There was always positivity, ways to advance oneself without losing pay, and they were more leniant with appointments.  Half way through the year, they did layoffs, and that's where everything went wrong.  Our supervisor went on leave, and a new management stepped in and changed everything.  We weren't trained to do our own work that they'd dump on us, but we'd also have to help do work for other departments if they were short handed, and not get recognition.  We lost any ability for leniancy with appointments, unless you were BFF's with management.  They would tell you something big was going to be happening, and that you'd have lots of time to be trained, but you wouldn't get information til days AFTER the change, which led to unnecessary anger from clients with uninformed agents, and even then the 'training' was to listen to the computer for 10 minutes, and expected to know everything.. They forced agents to take a reduction in pay to switch departments when they didn't want to.  It was just a horrible place to be by the end.

The work is hard to get used to with many systems unique to their company. Knowledge of the internet, websites, and how they're hosted is something you will have to be willing to get familiar with.

The management team is often unapproachable by the staff and they are also disconnected from those who make decisions outside the country.

"Restructuring" was a frequent event. There were phases that we would be gathered in a room and told several-a dozen employees would be let go. Sometimes entire teams would be eliminates in order to be outsources in the middle east for much lower costs to the company.

HR and higher management were protective of the company and lower management and dismissed serious circumstances between an employee and a manager based on anecdotal ideas of that manager's character, despite facts being recorded to prove it. 

The pay is good and if you can keep your head down and survive there for a while, it's a good stepping stone to get you by - but I don't recommend staying there for longer than a year. You may actually enjoy it in the beginning, but I guarantee you the illusion will fade. Everyone I've met working there has been of it somehow.

Most managers would benefit from training in managing people. Turnover seems too high and may be related to lack of advancement opportunities, low average compensation, and management relations. In four years, there have been 4 HR managers, which is not a good indication of organizational stability.
Some benefits include working with many different technologies, though this also reflects disorganization at a strategic level for a company that should already be mature.
Working from home is not encouraged, though tolerated.
Despite many cons, there are some hard working co-workers who are improving employee morale.

I really wanted to work in a job that was more technical than any jobs I had before. The instructors, co-workers were very good and supportive during the training. I worked as a Billing and Domain Specialist, I found the work very interesting. I liked working 4 10 hour shifts and have 3 days off or you could request overtime every week too and you would usually  get some. The managers were awesome. I would love to work there again. 

I provide accurate and appropriate information in
response to customer inquiries.
I address customer service inquiries in a timely and
accurate fashion. I also maintain up to
date records at all times of customer interactions.
I work with customers from approximately 1100 companies
assisting them with any billing concerns they may have.
I provide technical support for the client pertaining to
domain based email as well as any issues with their
websites. For example, the website getting connected to
servers, updating their websites and publishing a
finished website

I had the opportunity to use my creative and business writing skills toward promoting small businesses. The hardest part of the job was meeting deadlines. The most enjoyable aspect of the job was dealing with different clients and products or services which opened the door to understand and gain knowledge about a variety of business owners and their operations.

In this job I've seen alot of unfairness towards staff and working conditions in the office are terrible. Upper management treated us terribly always being talked down on, repeatedly being told we weren't doing good enough. ALWAYS UNDERSTAFFED. Which is apparent when you start working here. Your stress level will become so much you get physically ill.


At first, it was very different from any other call centre that I worked for.  Management was hands off but close by if you needed them.  As time went on, and employees came and left ( it is a call centre after all), the atmosphere became more tense.  Then we got a new GM and seemingly overnight, the place went from tolerable to hostile.  Got out when offered a new job 

Hostopia was a good job and i liked working there but sometime what they were asking for was out of reach even for the most skilled person.This would only happen if they were pressured by a client or head office and we would get the brunt of it.

Great job for anyone just looking to complete routine tasks for an affordable salary. Lots to learn on the technical side if interested, though only so much is available; If you're looking for a challenge this might not be the best route.
