Humptys Family Restaurant

A typical day for morning shift is a very slow first few hours, any break you take is deducted from your pay that day. Lunch or close to lunch it starts to pick up most days and you are working alone and it gets overwhelming very fast. The kitchen usually only has one cook so if it gets busy they will also be overwhelmed and underprepared. The boss comes in close to noon and hops between the kitchen and dining room to help out where he can but it's usually not enough help for rushes and we fall behind and look sloppy. I believe I learned a lot about customer interaction and how to take a lot of negativity without payoff, I also learned how to be in very stressful situations and how to handle the stress. All servers are kept at minimum wage no matter how long they stay or how good their work is, there are no benefits and the most hours you will ever get is one hour less than full time each day so that you are just barely under full time. Overtime pay and holiday doesn't exist but overtime work and holiday is expected. Vacation pay is paid out on every paycheque, paycheques are paper not digital. The establishment owner's family and friend receive free food but the staff is expected to pay half price for meals with restrictions on what you can get or not and one meal allowed per day. Breaks are not built into the schedule and it's up to chance if you are allowed one each shift. The hardest part of the job is how badly management handles everything and makes the servers life harder than needed while making their own life easier. The best part of the job is easily the regulars and customers, they make my day better than anything else. 

I was paid minimum wage, which isn't bad for a student, but the tips are what makes this job worth it. If you're an okay waitress (polite, gets the job done), you can make up to $50 in a part-time weekend shift (lunch rush!) If you're really good (great people skills, shows initiative that makes the customer feel more taken care of) you can make up to $150!

Menu was not too difficult to memorize, as they were brunch-themed. Typical server job. Lunch rush was the hardest part.

Management at the time was great, very approachable and kind. Workplace culture felt like a family! I loved working there :)  However, once the place was under new management, I quit! The new managers were intimidating--to say the least. They would not let the servers make too much small talk with the customers--which should actually be encouraged since this made the customers happy, especially the regulars (who, by the way, stopped coming after new management took over).

All in all, pretty decent, but the managers are who make the job enjoyable or not.

My day id come in wash down everything counters organzine fill things..plus wipe down  all tables set everything exactly perfect like every other table the exact same. work alone serving hostessing taking cash doing dishes putting them away. at the end of the night 2 hrs before close well still serving customers id sweep mop bathrooms vaccum garbages..cashout clean dish pit spotless roll 100s of silverware for morning girls. close all machines print off the earnings for the day lock up set alarm ..plus many other duties such as helping the cook filling ice making coffee. the weekend days very busy we have a dish washer but bus our own tables very hands on job.

A typical day at work was very busy, but productive.
The management was very rarely around but when they were they were good.
As for co-workers you take the good and the bad, everyone has a bad day here and there but other than that we got along great and worked as a team.
The hardest part of the job was running out of supplies cause the management wasn't there often to do the orders and didn't want anyone else to do it.
The most enjoyable part of my job there was seeing customers enjoy what we had prepared for them and working with the team I had there.
I learned how to make a kitchen run even if you may not have everything you need on hand and that even if everyone doesn't want to do their jobs I did what I needed to do to get the job done.

Great overall experience as a server her. Got to train and close restaurant on a regular basis with no supervision.
Excellent hours given to me. The guests were fantastic. Small restaurant meant it could get crazy full for hours on end during breakfast and lunch shift. My particular restaurant was open until 9pm...but you are lucky if you see a guest after 7pm. I really think having a bar or serving alcohol Would of significantly changed those numbers in an oil driven city., Small restaurant so you better be able to get along with the staff. There is one cook that will take his cooking down a few notches if he does not like you..,.so that's over all a bad experience.... Considering he gets a percentage of the bill paid by customers.

The typical day at work was busy a lot of prepping food and cleaning and doing dishes. I learnt how to use a knife and how to properly use a broom and dust pan. The management where pretty rude and caused me to loose a lot of my consternation. I loved how friendly my coworkers where. The hardest part of work was to keep the managers happy about my work ethic. They would be bugging me as I was trying to do my job so it made it really hard to work. The most enjoyable thing I found about work was working and enjoying the things I learnt everyday.

Management hasn’t a clue on what is going on, what needs to be done...
Training is Poor, with expectation that new staff should know everything after only a few shifts. Shift changes can happen last minute. Minimum staffing is stressful & cannot always serve customers in a timely & friendly manner. Owners family members that are staff do not pull their weight & are privileged to minimum work expectations. 
Plus side, most other coworkers are pretty easy to get along with. Customers are great.

Not a good place to work. You're expected to work past your scheduled shift (without pay) if some cleaning duties were not fulfilled on your shift. You do not get paid while doing your cash out, and if you're missing a slip, you are then made to pay either out of your tips or pocket. They refuse to look back through the register and they act like there is no way to see all the transactions for a specific day.  They are greedy and treat their foreign workers with no respect. Not nice people to work for.

Working here definitely helped me develop many skills. I can’t say enough about the amazing kitchen staff and kind customers. I made some strong connections with my customers. The hardest part was never being good enough for the senior staff who’d been there for years. On top of that, the clickiness and almost highschool like environment (ie; gossiping, bullying) fostered by the older staff is their biggest downfall. Asides from that, management was pretty easy going and kind. 

I enjoyed working at this location and i learned a lot on hour to deal with customers and how to serve properly. It's important to know how to treat customers and to keep them happy. Some hard parts to this job were working with some of my coworkers and having to shut the restaurant down all by myself in the evening.
