Working as an ACZ Driver with IATSE Local 873 in Toronto has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The work environment is professional, fast-paced, and team-oriented, with every day bringing something different. Being part of major film and television productions gives you a real sense of pride, knowing you play an important role behind the scenes in helping productions run smoothly and on schedule.

The union provides strong support, fair wages, excellent working conditions, and opportunities to build long-term relationships within the industry. The crews are hardworking, respectful, and highly skilled, making it easy to feel like part of a family. Management and coordinators value reliability, safety, and professionalism, and those qualities are recognized and appreciated.

As an ACZ Driver, you gain valuable experience working around large-scale productions, transporting equipment safely, and adapting to changing schedules and locations throughout Toronto and the GTA. It’s a demanding job at times, but also exciting and fulfilling. For anyone looking to work in the film industry while being part of a respected union with great people and solid opportunities, IATSE Local 873 is an excellent place to build a career.

Working in film at IATSE is great in some ways and not so great in others. The hours are long and unpredictable, you are at the beck and call of the producers and directors, however, if you're like me where you don't like going to the same place for the same hours, and doing the same predictable job all day, it can be for you! Just about every day takes you to a new location, with a new set of challenges and problems to solve. Every shoot is cool to see, and I've never had so much fun at a job!
The major downside is, as you're starting out, if you're not yet a member, and just of permit status with the union, you will not have stable work. You will get laid off regularly, so it's great if you have other part time jobs to suppliment the income as you work toward member status. 

i started out wanting a life in the film industry, but after 12 years in it, i'm decided on changing my life around. the entertainment industry for younger less senior employees is harder on the personal life. lots of keys and heads of departments are only concerned about self preservation and will make things difficult for advancement if you are trying hard for yourself, almost like a bizarre jealousy, there are lots of cut throat and two faced individuals, but the entertainment industry seems to attract individuals who are extremely narcissistic, and i got to see that quite alot along the way.

It can take time to build up a career, to become a full union member, and to start earning a full year's salary.  That said, a part year (6-8 months) in certain departments can be sufficient to earn the equivalent to a yearly salary at an average job, if you're willing to work hard/put in the time.
It isn't always possible to choose your work sites as a non-union worker, and certain team leads can be challenging to deal with due to stress in their position, or lack of management skills, but there are usually other workers to help navigate through difficult situations.

The flexibility the job affords me allows for me to spend time with my family

The long hours, and sometimes early start times

Relatively informal, with a majority arts based staff

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Show up on time, complete the day’s assignment in a relaxed, friendly environment, and return home at the end of the day…

I arrive before 7:00 am, pick up where I left off, get a new assignment, and build sets with other carpenters. I'm expected to and appreciated for working hard. Some guys are a bit aloof, but most are supportive and friendly. The most challenging part of the job is either downtime between shows or the many hours of overtime when working on a show. The best part of the job is being with a group of great guys, learning all kinds of skills while working on really cool projects.

Our work environment is very relaxed

Personal driver to actors always interesting, different actors, different  life different experiences so it was always very interesting no complain about anything.

Working with great people on amazing productions.

Whilst working I learned a variety of new interchangeable techniques and skills that I have carried throughout my life. The process of joining is quite easy. The people you meet are so helpful. It is a different experience from any other job experience that I have ever had.

Having Work. Getting Paid. Paying Rent.

The Hours. The Egos. The Insanity.

Toxic But Money Making. It pays the bills.

Long Hours.  Stressful for no reason.
