I've been with the company for 10 years and when I started I loved the job. I felt supported and encouraged by my peers and supervisors and was proud to be a part of the company because I felt heard. 
Then 2018 happened. 
This is when everything went downhill. They realigned districts in 2020 and since then there have been little direction and vague communication from corporate. They basically throw everything at you as a manager and you are constantly forced to work off the clock because there is so little payroll. You are expected to request popular merchandise that they never send but still want feedback. Ear piercing training for me was a joke, I had to learn by doing because they just tell you to dot an ear, ask if the customer likes it regardless if it's correct. The nose piercings we did weren't long enough for the healing process so they kept falling out and stores had to end up dealing with mad customers because they wasted 60 dollars. 
Now that we are about to close all stores corporate has lied every step of the way. Some store managers came to work to find they'd been locked out of their stores due to rent not being paid and never even told those stores to prepare them. They are not giving any of us severance pay, we will not be paid out our earned pto, bonuses will not be sent out and through all of this, our supervisors have said "we are here for you every step of the way" and continue to act like all employees won't be out of a job in September of this year. We were told we would get raises in April that never came and we were gaslighted when we asked for an update when we asked for an update. I have never in my life worked for a worse company. If they make it through this bankruptcy I'd be shocked since instead of investing in stores that were already open they chose to put claires in walmarts and kiosks in other retailers which backfired completely,  but they kept it up. They stopped caring about Icings back in 2018. 

There were many responsibilities working here, which was fine and completely doable IF you had 2 people working at the same time. However, that would rarely be the case and somehow the single worker in the store is expected to pierce peoples ears (from infant to adult), process ear piercings, cash out customers WHILE also piercing ears, which can take some time, especially when you get a small child that's nervous, and the fact that there was only ever one person working meant you nearly ALWAYS had to do ears one at a time for children, which never went well. The "training", to do ear piercings was piercing a cardboard ear and then filling out a small questionnaire booklet. In my opinion, when you are dealing with these kinds of things, more health and safety training is needed, you are, to some degree, dealing with bodily fluids of another person and for NO extra commission or pay. Workers of any kind do not get any benefits whatsoever from piercing ears, its simply something uncomfortable they have to do, only to make the same amount of money as any other cashier. 

Claire’s could care less about icing and it’s success. You are given very very bare minimum hours to staff your store for the week and have to work alone most of the time. How are you suppose to pierce ears, run the tills and tend to customers all at the same time alone? Not to mention if your activity piercing someone’s ear you are not able to watch for theft unless you are completely reckless. So many issues with the way that Claire’s handles the running of icing and the way they treat their employees as a whole. They either need to put more of their budget into icing to help it succeed and more marketing because half of the “customer” that walk in have no clue what icing is. How do you expect the general public to know about a brand or a branch of a brand if there’s absolutely no marketing. It’s the only icing in Alberta, think a little bit more as to why your failing and stop putting that onto your employees who work their ***** off to try their best. They run you down, make you feel useless and like your worthless and expect you to have split yourself into 6 different people to run the store yourself. Save yourself and don’t bother working here.

The company constantly pushed for sales and the amount of items purchased. We had to continuously convince people to get more items than they want and follow them around. Took them a good 9 weeks for me to receive my pay because “the papers got lost” and no one did anything. HR never did anything. When you called it sent you straight to voice mail and they’d call back the next day at absurd times.   The only good thing about this place was the staff team. The district manager was wicked and so was the manager for Claire’s who would always come in and spy on us.

And force you to perform piercings without proper training or safe equipment 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Depending on employees it can be a fun place to work

Yelled at by district manager because I wasn’t able to take her phone call
I was in the middle of piercing

This place is probably the worst place you could work. If you have a complaint about something or someone in charge HR does nothing they don’t care about their employees and they let their district manager and regional managers run wild letting them do whatever they want. This is probably the worst company I have ever worked for and I would never in 1 million years recommend anybody work for them.

The store always needed to be reorganized, and neatened up as customers were always picking things up and putting them somewhere else. But I enjoyed that part of my job as I love to organize things and straighten things to there proper places. I learned that nothing lasts forever and sometimes no matter how hard you try you might fail. The hardest part of the job was packing everything up knowing that I wasn't going to ever unpack them.

many coworkers would take my customers at the till after doing the customer service and talking (obviously, the credit goes to them and they make it look like they did all the work)

the manager back then was very nice but didnt even give me a chance. within 2 months, she fired me for no reason

You will never not have something to do because you are usually the only person working in the store. You are either cashing someone out, doing an ear piercing, putting out stock, doing markdowns, finishing POG or recovering the store. This job keeps you busy and requires ability to work unsupervised and in stressful situations.

Poor management and wage is not livable. No matter how many hours you work you can’t pay bills. Poor communication and staff is lazy. Unsanitary and poor training. Overall poor experience
