Independent Grocers

A typical day at work included me providing tactful and friendly customer service whilst ringing through their groceries, as well as handling cash and credit cards.

I learned to further my abilities with customer service as well as building relationships with fellow coworkers and customers of the store. I also learned to enhance my multi-tasking skills with balancing tasks at hand and customer service.

The management was supportive and listened to any concerns and comments that arose in the workplace, as well as being understandable with requests for time off or shift changes.

The workplace culture was repetitive in the sense that the grocery store ran the same way effectively every day, with the help of management and dedicated staff.

The hardest part of the job was not being able to handle the lines of customers as quickly as I wanted to.

The most enjoyable part of my job consisted of the everyday interactions with new and familiar faces that came through the cashiers till, regardless of sharing a quick story or seeing how a customers day was.

I had a very positive experience working at Independent Grocer in Marathon, Ontario. The workplace has a friendly and supportive environment where employees work together as a team to provide excellent customer service. Management is respectful, understanding, and always encourages staff to do their best. I gained valuable experience in stocking shelves, assisting customers, maintaining clean displays, and following health and safety standards. The job helped me improve my communication, teamwork, and time management skills in a fast-paced environment. I also appreciated the opportunity to interact with customers daily and learn more about grocery operations and inventory management. The store maintains high cleanliness standards and creates a welcoming atmosphere for both employees and customers. Overall, Independent Grocer is a great place to work for anyone looking to gain retail experience, develop professional skills, and work with supportive coworkers and management.              

Independent had a friendly atmosphere, I could ask questions from any of the staff members if needed and I always recieved helpful tips. I was given the opportunity to continue to lean how to handle cash efficiently, as well ashow to enter coupons into the system and help customers use their Optimum Points. I also organied grocery carts every few days.The managment was helpful and well organized. The hardest part of working at Independent was standing for long periods of time, however it became more bareable the more time I was employed at the store. The most enjoyable part of working at Independent was interacting with the kind and helpful staff. I never felt judged or excluded from the team.

Starting out it was enjoyable though over time starting a shift seems to make you feel more tired like you were at a long lecture at college. Through my experiences I learned how to be more talkative towards people as well as how to handle people in a stressful situation. The management, to me, seems to be increasingly ignorant toward the worker's personal life. Constantly calling in and changing a part-time worker to a full-time worker when they can't work full-time. Co-workers, for the most part, were enjoyable and fun to be around. The hardest part of the job, for myself, would be that i always had nothing to do and i had search for some kind of a task to pass the time. The most enjoyable part of the job is meeting new people, co-workers and strangers alike.

It was OK to work there if you need a job.  They try and take into account your preferences for shifts at the beginning.  It also depends on who is doing the scheduling.

Cashiering is a hard job on the body.  They insist that you start your 15 minute coffee break as soon as you leave your til but there is a long way to walk for the coffee break room.

I really enjoyed working with the customers.  Of course there is always grouches but you just treat them with kindness.

was not there very long, coworker kicked me and as far as i know he's probably still there, i wouldn't know as i not set foot in there since i quit.  workers comp and so i quit. i still got ei which was a bonus. 

So many have quit when i was there, so that should speak for itself.

breaks and lunches - very late,  I learned that the word team is not in the Management vocabulary. I love my co-workers they are great.  The hardest is dealing with angry customers with no back up from Management and the most enjoyable is dealing with fun customers. It is why I am looking for a new job.

Decent place to work if you just need something steady. The job itself is pretty straightforward, but management can be hit or miss depending on the location. Coworkers are usually chill, which makes shifts go by faster. Pay is average, nothing amazing, but not terrible either. Good for a first job or something part-time, just don’t expect tons of growth.


Completely unorganized, waiting three weeks for training/ safety walk through that never happened. Management couldn't even decide what department they wanted me to work in, or what hours they were looking to hire for. Owner is totally unprofessional and unhinged. Not worth the peanuts they offer in wages 


Wages are really poor now that the minimum hourly wage has increased , since now there has been cutbacks  in hours.
It takes 650 hours to get a raise. And if your hours have been reduced to 15 hours a week, it will take a long time to get a .15 an hour raise, which use to be .25 an hour raise.
