coming into the role, management had already told me to give it 6 months..which should have been a red flag already. Management hands off task to administrative assistants that do not take accountability for anything. They will not respond to you, overlook your email and not pick up their phone when you need them. Everything is done over email until they make a mistake then they make phone calls to make sure there is no paper trail. They will keep contacting you if they need something but will be unreachable when you have a problem or complaint. Management and their assistants go back and forth on who handles what that I do not even think they know. While pay and benefits are great because they are under the government of Canada, you have to be the type of person to be okay with disorganization, lack of communication and unprofessional conduct to last. They are very short staffed in the nursing realm as such the people that stay are they people they care more about despite them being a cause for new employee dissatisfaction. Managers will only reach out when they mess up so bad they want to stop you from quitting but lack accountability when you try to give them constructive criticism . While I loved the job while I was in community, the politics and the people in the organization was ultimately what made me leave

What is the best part of working at the company?
Getting to care for community members from all age groups in northern nursing stations, from birth to death. I love the variety of the work we do, and the opportunity to build long term relationships with community members. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Travelling (flying) to remote, isolated reserves and being away from family. Working in low resource setting with limited staffing, have to get creative sometimes! Finally managing the high volume of patients visits and frequent overnight emergencies, sometimes requiring very long work hours. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Management is very supportive and provides extensive hands on and virtual training for community health nurses

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
See patients in clinic 9-5 then rotate through an overnight call back schedule for emergencies.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing. It is full of red tape and management with no leadership qualities

Trying to accomplish a successful outcome while being bound by archaic legislation and leaders who aren’t equipped to explore outside of the box thinking

Toxic. Narcissistic management with no ability to put employees mental and emotional well being at the forefront

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Bombarded with emails, requests to do work that is out of your scope and being left to interpret complicated legislation without proper support

I have worked for this company for ten years and they have become terrible employers. Their management team only cares about having a “body” present in the clinic for staffing numbers. Their communication is extremely poor. You often have pay issues or don’t get paid. You are always pulled from your assignment. You are always short staffed. This company needs to do better in order to have proper staffing, no one wants to work for them. They create very unsafe work environments for their employees. 

My time with Indigenous Services Canada left a lot to be desired. The communication was consistently inadequate, marked by prolonged wait times and unhelpful information from representatives. You will often be put in unsafe working conditions with minimal training and support, not to mention the consistent understaffing, so if you value the license you worked so hard to attain, I would recommend you refrain from pursuing a position with them. Additionally, the lack of transparency and bureaucratic hurdles unfortunately underscores a system that appears indifferent to the needs of those it aims to serve. 

Very lengthy and repetitive hiring process. Various departments will call asking the same questions and they don't realize their colleagues already spoke to you.  Huge numbers of departments doing the same things, highly redundant and confused organization.  Can expect to go up to a month without pay, then will pay you pennies on the dollar when they finally figure out who is paying you.  Forget about expense reports, they take up to 6 months to reimburse.  Field managers are arrogant and think they're elite, their knowledge base is just average.  Avoid ISC if you have bills to pay, I almost went bankrupt working here.

Awesome place to start working for the feds but it's slow, so many changes are happenings, it can be disorganized and quiet frankly, departments don't communicate with each other like they should. Managers are very supportive, accommodating and understanding. Benefits are great in the long run and so is the pension but the pay is sorta like chump change. You're also not guaranteed a job when your term is completed. Your coworkers have basically been working there all their lives. Formal education doesn't seem to be a requirement. Must start at the bottom to move anywhere else.

The team spirit was very good.   The workload was extremely heavy and there needs to be improvements in administration of how work happens.  They could also use more staff to assist with the work demands.  
The passion about the nature of the work was extraordinary.   People were inspired by the positive changes they were able to assist clients in attaining.

Great manager, very supportive and super approachable. Work can get a little boring at times. At other times incoming phone calls are off the hook. Most frustrating thing are requests that are submitted late or incomplete and expected to be processed  IMMEDIATELY. Volume can be heavy and is definitely steady. Work from home is good. Still connected to the team although you have to build relationships virtually

Creative environment. Strong focus.

There was a change of management mid stream, which led to taking comms team in a different direction.

Exciting, creative, outside the box thinking.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working from home, assignments for week on Monday, daily update meeting at 11 am, virtual drinks on Thursday at 5 pm.
