Indwell

I worked at Indwell as a part of their Canada Summer Jobs program last summer across from their Head Office on Main St. at the Flourish office. Although Flourish and Indwell are separate, Flourish develops buildings for Indwell's programming, so we worked very closely together, as well with other clients. 

From the start, it was a very welcoming environment that challenged me to grow both professionally and individually. The mission of providing hope and homes for everyone, and treating all with dignity and respect, was something emphasized and carried out daily by staff at all locations I visited. 

While working there, the flexibility to work from home in a hybrid model was something that was appreciated. My immediate supervisor was incredibly understanding and accommodating of personal/family emergencies that prevented me from coming into work as well. They don't just see you as an asset or a cog in the machine, they see you as a person and strive to be compassionate to whatever you may be experiencing. 

The community created by the staff was unparalleled by any other workplace I've been a part of. We often ate lunch together in the main building, sharing things that were going on in our daily lives. Although my term was only eight weeks, I genuinely felt like people had interest in getting to know me, and I got to know so many of the staff at different locations. Upper management does not have a superiority complex of any kind, they often will eat lunch with everyone else and take an interest in your work even if it is not something that affects them. Beyond sharing lunches, staff would do things outside of work as well, such as playing Spikeball in the park after work or meeting in the evening for food. 

Something to keep in mind - this job is not necessarily for the faint of heart. Particularly for the support workers who do the most on the ground work. I was in an office job setting, but I took multiple site visits. The situations that Indwell aims to assist with, particularly in units with their most intensive care, can be distressing or disturbing to observe/treat. Many struggle with substance abuse in their housing, or other behaviours that led to them needing supportive housing. This is what makes Indwell so special at the end of the day - serving the most vulnerable in our communities and undertaking a housing first approach, removing the problem of shelter from these individuals' concerns so other issues can be tackled. 

Overall, Indwell and Flourish are incredible places to work. From the staff, to the vision, to the leadership, they are top-tier organizations addressing a real need. I learned so much in my eight week term at Flourish. For anyone seeking summer opportunities, this is a tremendous way to grow your skills as a professional and learn from some very smart staff. For anyone seeking permanent employment - you can trust that these organizations have your best interests in mind, while pursuing a goal that contributes to the greater good. 

In the world of Christian charities, Indwell stands out for its cold, heartless approach towards its most valuable assets - its workers. My experience with this company has been nothing short of disheartening, revealing a culture of callousness that prioritizes profit over the well-being of its employees.

Its new management and Director of Operations is more interested in maximizing its bottom line than fostering a healthy and supportive work environment. The management's lack of empathy is palpable, creating an atmosphere where employees are treated as mere cogs in the machinery of profit.

One of the most glaring issues is the complete disregard for work-life balance. Employees are routinely subjected to unreasonably long hours and tight deadlines without any acknowledgment of the toll it takes on their mental and physical well-being. The relentless push for productivity comes at the expense of employee satisfaction and overall morale.

Moreover, Indwell has shown an alarming indifference to the concerns and grievances of its workforce. Attempts to communicate with management about issues such as inadequate working conditions, lack of career development opportunities, and unequal pay were met with bureaucratic red tape and a dismissive attitude. It is evident that the company views its employees as expendable resources rather than valuable contributors to its success.  It is disheartening to witness a company so focused on cost-cutting that it neglects the very people who drive its success.

Furthermore, Indwell has demonstrated a propensity for ruthless layoffs without proper consideration for the affected individuals. Employees are let go with little notice, and the company's severance packages are notoriously inadequate. This ruthless approach creates an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, breeding discontent among the remaining staff.

In conclusion, Indwell epitomizes the worst aspects of corporate culture masquerading as a caring Christian company. The blatant disregard for employee well-being, the absence of empathy from management, and the overall heartlessness displayed by the company paint a bleak picture. Potential job seekers and conscientious consumers should be wary of supporting such an entity that lacks basic humanity in its dealings with the individuals who contribute to its success.

I worked at Indwell for over a year, and it was one of the most draining experiences of my life. The company culture is toxic, with management showing zero regard for the mental health of its employees. There is an overwhelming pressure to constantly work overtime, and any attempt to discuss workload or stress is met with dismissal or even reprimand. The expectation to prioritize work over personal well-being is ingrained in the company culture, leading to burnout and emotional exhaustion among the staff.

There are no resources or support systems in place for employees struggling with mental health issues. Instead, there's a pervasive attitude that mental health problems are a sign of weakness, and those who seek help are viewed as less committed or dependable. This creates a hostile environment where employees feel they have to suppress their struggles and suffer in silence.

Additionally, there is a complete lack of transparency and communication from upper management regarding company policies and decisions, further exacerbating feelings of anxiety and uncertainty among the workforce. The constant fear of layoffs or sudden changes adds to the already high levels of stress.

Overall, working at Indwell took a significant toll on my mental health, and I would caution anyone considering employment here to think twice. This company prioritizes profit over people, and until there is a fundamental shift in values and priorities, I cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone.

By far the best social service organization around.  If you are wanting to help vulnerable individuals experiencing housing insecurity, this is the best organization to work for. Leadership treat staff well by being flexible with scheduling, consulting the team and group problem solving,  and providing ongoing support. Indwell is growing very quickly, and there is an organizational commitment to changing for the better and learning from past mistakes. They also invest in staff by providing training such as ASIST and NVCI so staff feel prepared for challenges they may face. Managers have all started in entry-level positions, so they have an understanding of program challenges and are more than willing to help out.  I cannot recommend Indwell enough. While the pay is not high, it is competitive compared to other entry-level social service positions. 

As an employee of Indwell, I can confidently say that it has been a learning experience for me. The job can be challenging at times, as each tenant has unique needs, but the organization's commitment to meeting tenants where they are at is truly inspiring.

One of the best things about working at Indwell is the culture of growth and development. Staff members are given ample opportunities to share their ideas and suggestions for improving working conditions and tenant care. This has led to a collaborative and inclusive work environment where everyone's input is valued.

Indwell is committed to involving all staff in strategic planning and decision-making. Regular employee surveys and one-on-one meetings with supervisors ensure that everyone's opinions are heard. I am grateful to be a part of the Indwell team and look forward to continuing to contribute to its growth and diversity. 

This is hard work, but fulfilling work for the right person who has a heart to work to support the marginalized communities. Management will role up their sleeves and work too when we need them in the front lines. I have never felt more heard and supported in a nursing role and I have worked in several. People do burn out but it isn't because they are not supported, it is because front line work with the population we support is tough and it happens everywhere. Indwell works hard to ensure we recharge. They provide team debrief counselling and retreats and weekly check ins etc. They do a lot more than a lot of places and I am here to stay!

I am so grateful for Indwell and the work it does. It is exciting to help it work towards providing "Hope & Homes for All". The community within staff is a huge bonus - for example, staff stop to eat lunch together and Indwell organizes both an annual spiritual retreat and leadership retreat for all staff. Indwell sees its staff as whole people and wants them to thrive. While life circumstances are making me go elsewhere for now, I'll miss being a part of the Indwell team, but plan to remain in touch with many of them.

These buildings are wolves in sheep’s clothing. The agency expects those who struggle with co-occurring disorders to use community services and offers little to no true in-house support. The well educated and experienced hires don’t stick around long, and I don’t blame them. Way too understaffed! The agency goal is to build and grow, get people off the streets, but not truly support their success. I have no clue on how they get funding and donations, but there’s no doubt their proposal writers and PR reps are masters of rhetoric!

The community with coworkers overall is good, however the opportunity for advancement is limited despite good job performance. Employees overall do not feel as though they are appreciated, and there is a relatively high turnover rate with staff as there is not much for staff. As a part time worker you are not guaranteed any time off (even if you book it), and will be working every holiday, and on weekends.
