Interim Place

I have really enjoyed my experience working with this organization. I have learned a lot from very experienced people and know that the work I do is making an impact. I have been supported and encouraged and challenged in ways that have caused me to grow (professional abilities and my confidence) and develop new skills.

As a whole this organization has an open and progressive culture rooted in a very strong feminist anti-oppression anti-racism framework. The supervisors have a thorough understanding of how to operationalize the framework when providing services to the community. Staff are always encouraged and supported when they advocate for the women and push for change in the systems that continue to oppress women. Senior Management has decades of experience from working in the field and they are open to sharing their knowledge and mentoring those who are just beginning their careers in the field. This is evident from the organization's hiring strategy as the staff body is diverse and has significant representation from young women of colour. 

The organization's mandate is centered around women empowerment and putting the clients first. Management is committed to and actively invests in resources for staff development and training. Staff are always given opportunities to learn and self-reflect in pursuit of their growth and development in the work they do to serve the women. If you work-hard and are committed to the work of ending violence against women, this a great place to learn from and make an impact on the community. 

Just like any other organization that provides emergency services and engages in crisis work, depending on the situation, work days can be unpredictable and sometimes stressful. But I have to say that management is great about providing lots of support and guidance to those who are willing to access it and also provides follow-up training where necessary.

This is a toxic workplace, most of it comes from management. There is a huge lack of collaboration and communication between workers and management. The environment is very unsupportive and not empowering at all. Staff is usually stressed or burned out. If you want to experience a toxic workplace, this place is a great place to experience it. 

Management doesn't seem to trust the staff they hire, who are really well educated and trained, so management take over a lot of situations with questionable judgements that doesn't fit with the frameworks that this place was supposed to use. A lot of the staff seem to understand the frameworks (anti-racism, anti-oppression, feminism, anti-ableism, etc). 

Expect to be anonymously reported for anything without having any discussions to figure things out. There was no chances of resolving conflicts with the process they used and it encouraged toxicity as a result of it. It wasn't beneficial in the relationships between workers.

Some of the employees I worked with were really great. We tried our best to be supportive to each other and help each other grow, but unfortunately it's very difficult to make a lot of progress within a toxic environment and dealing with the high stress of this job.

I entered to work at this place many years ago and things are changed for the best. I have been working with a diverse group of women embracing the framework in all levels. My interview was done by the Program and Services Manager a wonderful woman who believes in each women’s talents and supports the growth of counsellors. She brings to the place many trainings to help the workers build their confidence and education. The manager values the lived experiences of counsellors who can work with women understanding the struggles and barriers women face. She helps other management and staff to continue challenging their biases and misconceptions. 
At this place, I discovered that with the support of others such as the manager and my co-workers I can develop my empathy, compassion, and understanding for others. I have learned to unlearn the many oppressive behaviours and comments to what we have been socialized. I have had the opportunity to help my colleagues to challenge themselves. 
At this place, we are working together to continue dismantling the violence against women, we support each other, we encourage and empower each other.

I worked at Interim Place for a few years but left to pursue further education. My experience has been that if you do your job which is to provide ongoing, nonjudgmental support to clients then you will enjoy your job, have nothing to fear and you are able to have a positive working relationship with management. Unfortunately when you have a positive relationship with management you are sometimes seen as suspect by your peers. I have a positive attitude so that makes a big difference. I believe the workplace culture and the environment is created by everyone in it. 

The hardest part of the job is prioritizing the needs of clients throughout your shift and managing conflict when it arises.

I really appreciate that the company allows flexibility in your workday and unlimited PTO. My co-workers are easy to work with, and I feel supported by team leads. 
I only wish the pay was a bit higher. Because of this, I doubt if I will be able to work here for very long. But for the time being, I'm enjoying learning new things and picking up a few skills.

Great experience when it comes to helping women.
Workers are not treated fair by management.
Not a great job for longterm due to managements tactics to target employees but the experiences are valuable when dealing with the women.
Employee turnover is extremely high which makes workload extra heavy.

I worked at Interim Place as a Counsellor for 10 years. In the early 2000 Interim Place was at forefront on decreasing female violence and creating safe spaces for women. Today it’s a sloppy place for drug addict homeless women. The management is horrible and they have found a way to eradicate all the wonderful seniors staff that once made the place great.

I have really enjoyed working at Interim Place and am proud to be part of such an amazing organization that is truly one of a kind.  There are many opportunities afforded to the employees at Interim Place.  There mission and vision is embedded within all levels of the organization.  You would be lucky to join such a great team!
