This union was a great place to start out. I learned about how unions operate as well as how to be a support for the union. We worked as highly skilled, safe and reliable tradespeople for the owners and contractors. Leadership was a big role in our line of work, as each worker would be assigned to a crew and work as a team. The team leader being the foreman would instruct us on the days task and we would break into smaller crews and figure out how to maintain or repair what we were contracted to. Everyone that I have interacted with on the job site have been very nice and helpful to me, as I was an apprentice and still learning. The hardest part of the job was living away from home, family and friends for extended periods of time. Also because the work site was usually heavy duty as we used cranes for lifting, there would be danger towards people walking underneath or around the surrounding area while a heavy load was in the air. Usually the area would be flagged off and there wouldn't be any unauthorized people in the area. I would say the best part of this job is the traveling. I got to see all different parts of the country and work in towns that I never knew existed.

Great pay and a benefits but its contract work that can be 1 day long or 10 years long. Every job is different and unique. The union hall calls your name off a waiting list for each contract and dispatches you. When the job is done your name goes back on the list and you wait until it gets to the top for the next job. Sometimes you have to travel for months across the province or country to find work but if you police clearance to work at a nuclear site the work is booming in the GTA and around Ontario right now. Hours can be as crazy as 7 days a week 12 hours a day but they pay insane amounts for overtime to compensate you and you take your vacations between contracts. Can be hard on work life balance but the money makes it easy to work with.

I worked on numerous industrial sites ranging from Petro-chemical to Chemical to Power Generation to Pulp and Paper. I learned the meaning of hard work and work in a very culturally diverse work field. We worked with many different management styles and had to learn to adapt to all of them. The hardest part of the job is definitely being away from home and the family, sacrificing both your  family life and social life. However at the same time the long lasting relationships and ever changing work scopes keep the work enjoyable.

Great work culture, you'll work with people who really care about you and your safety. You'll never feel excluded as long as you follow the culture of safety and professionalism. By far the best, safest jobs i've ever had! Definitely recommend. Work can be slow, so fast paced people tend not to like the jobs very much!

From a Grand Rapids welding inspector to being interviewed by another division of TransCanada while on the pipeline and hired for the Whitecourt/Thornbury position.
Two different managers by both excellent and great to work for and I would centrally go out of my way to work with them again

Truly the best people to work with and for, to have both job security, and pride, but for learning new skills and jobs. The best by far I had ever experienced.

The pay is good, the benefits are good, the downfall is sometimes having to be away from home from time to time, but you get to choose whether you want to go back to work or not after a job or not

Long hours. Have to travel all over the. Country for work. Extended periods away from home. Must be ok with heights and not claustraphobic. That's all I have to say about it.

Clicky environment. Some good people to work with and some not so good to work with. Money and benefits were the best part of the job. If you want to work you need to be prepared to travel and work when the work is available 

Day is usually spent pulling permits and organizing work, also gathering tools. I learned how to manage my time efficiently and how to be a mentor to younger apprentices.
