We worked twelve hour shifts that were five days on (two days-three nights) four days off and four days on (two days-two nights) five days off. My shift started with a routine maintenance check of all pumps and oil pressures. I would then gather multiple samples from all over our section of the plant. I would then perform all the necessary tests on each sample and record the data, which will would then be inputted by myself into the computer. Next I would check the control operation screens for abnormal levels in our section of the plant. I made sure to spend equal time in all areas of our section (Hydrogen Plant, Amine Gas Treating Plant, and Sulfur Plant).

I learned how to perform various chemical and physical test on (multiple) samples. I became familiar with routine checks and how to perform the maintenance on equipment. Learned to guided myself through the operating controls software (what to check for, where everything is at, what happens to one area if another area fails).

Management was wonderful, they had trust in the workers and for the most part allowed us to run our sections. They were the mediator between all the sections of the plant up in Control Operations.

The team I was placed in was always willing to answer any questions I had. They allowed me to perform tasks on my own and was always there to guide me through something new. I feel they were more of a teammate then a co-worker, there was usually on 5-6 people in each section and we got to know each other all quite well.

The most enjoyable part of this job was the balance of work and life. We got our schedules in advanced that showed all days/nights we were working and what we had off. I enjoy shift work.

I loved my job working in the B2C department of Irving Oil. They are extremely good to their employees.
I became a pro at my job and often trained others. I worked extra hours and also took on some extra work from other departments that needed my help. 
My day consisted of reconciling accounts, doing match offs, credits and rebills and working with a program called Peoplesoft. 
I was hired through Adecco on a 3 month contract, but my contract was extended. I wanted a permanent position there so badly! I wanted to officially be part of the JDI team. As time passed, people I had trained (who were also hired from Adecco) were given full time employment. I would often ask my boss if there was anything I could do to also be offered a job. She would often say "in another few months" or "when we move over to the Aliant building" but I was never offered a full time, permanent position. I asked Adecco what I could do. They told me in order to apply for a permanent position, my current position would have to let me go. As long as I was tied to my department, another department couldn't take me on full time. So I put in my 2 weeks notice, determined to reapply and be rehired as an official employee. As I waited to get a reply to my resume, I took on more contract work and was hired for permanent position elsewhere. I never did hear from Irving again. Till this day I still reapply, but I do think perhaps I was misinformed and should have stayed.

I’ve  been working with Irving Oil as a propane delivery driver since September 2022 at the Dartmouth location. My experience so far has been positive and rewarding. Irving Oil provides a structured and safety-focused work environment, which is crucial when dealing with hazardous materials like propane.

The management team is supportive and approachable, and there’s a strong emphasis on training and compliance. I’ve had access to the tools and resources needed to do my job efficiently, including a well-maintained Freightliner tandem truck and clear routing systems.

Work-life balance is decent for the most part, especially during the non-peak seasons, though winter months can be quite demanding due to higher customer demand. The compensation and benefits package is fair and competitive for the industry, with additional incentives during the busy season.

One of the things I appreciate most is the company’s commitment to safety and customer service. Every delivery is handled with care, and customer satisfaction is a top priority.

Overall, Irving Oil is a solid company to work for if you are looking for stability, safety, and a respectful team environment in the fuel delivery industry.

My typical day is pretty good; every day, there is something new to do or learn. The most important lesson I learned is that you should always take on any opportunity thrown at you. You shouldn't back down even if it may seem a bit out of your comfort zone. By the end, you will learn alot. Management is great; they are always there to guide you, and you always feel heard and part of a bigger team. The workplace culture is great, there is no toxic environment. Everyone feels friendly and easy to approach. The workplace workstation is amazing, too; it is convenient. The hardest part of the job is the fact that, at times, work can be very fast-paced. Priorities can change and you need to adapt. Sometimes, you may feel overwhelmed with the workload, but it helps you develop your time management and organizational skills. The most enjoyable part about the job is there is always something new to learn whether you are a long-term employee or coop student.

It's a decent place to work. For trucking, it is great. Truck drivers are paid for 12 hours, regardless of how long they work. OT is also paid after 48 hours a week. The job is easy, although the work is not always divided evenly. This creates a bit of a union-mentality amongst drivers, although these are not unionized positions.

For office staff, there's a sink or swim mentality and there are limited resources for learning the basics of the job. There are many departments, and it's often difficult to find out whose responsible for certain issues.

The managers are generally good, but there tends to be a high turnover in those roles. The driver managers in Dartmouth when I left were good, though managers are sometimes scapegoated for broader organizational issues. It's often difficult to find out where the orders are coming from within the company.

Overall, I would work there again, although I would not want to work in the office.

If you want to work there, they are old school: Demonstrate you are loyal, hard-working, and that you will not steal. It is not an environment for everyone.

I had a great experience working at Irving. The workplace environment was friendly, supportive, and well organized. Management was respectful and always willing to help employees when needed. The team worked well together, which made daily tasks smooth and enjoyable. I appreciated how the company focused on maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for both employees and customers.

During my time there, I learned valuable skills such as customer service, teamwork, time management, and handling responsibilities during busy hours. The job helped me become more confident while interacting with customers and solving problems quickly.

The store was always well maintained, and there was a strong focus on providing good service to everyone who visited. It was a positive place to work, and I’m thankful for the experience I gained while being part of the team.

There isn't a typical day in this job, as each day can vary significantly. Like any other job, there can be challenging days. However, management is very supportive and helpful. Safety is a top priority, which is essential in this line of work. The trucks do tend to break down frequently, but they are usually repaired eventually. Such issues are common in this industry. 

Additionally, the overall pay could be improved compared to other driving positions. The compensation does not seem to align well with the demands of the job. It can be physically demanding at times, especially during peak seasons. However, it is very rewarding to assist customers with their fueling needs.

There appears to be some turnover, which may explain why it can be challenging to find good drivers. Overall, it is a good place to work, but there are still some areas that need improvement.

Worked at Irving for over a year.  Leadership is in the blame mode for safety.  They are reactive, not proactive.  They look for blame rather than focusing on emotional intelligence and investing in people not just statistics.
Also the are always looking to point the finger rather than grab you by the hand for a learning moment.  They also seek problems outside the department with operations so that the focus is outside the safety department and reflects back on operations.  They are about 8-10 years behind the industry culture. A change in the safety management area is required to move the needle and to create proper impact for the font line and overall business
