Most disappointing job I worked in my Career. I worked at the Calgary, Market Mall location and it was the worst experience of my life. They don’t care about work life balance for their employees. If you stayed extra time because you had to because the store was really busy and clocked out even 30 minutes late because you were stuck at cash and couldn’t leave they would cut your time to the minute you were supposed to close. As well, we would receive our schedule extremely late sometimes getting our schedule that starts Monday, on the Friday before. Then management would get mad at the staff for saying they couldn’t work certain days, but were never given any time heads up for when there shifts were.m. Assistant management and store managers would say they were working in their office, but then talk with the other co-workers like the full time visual merchandiser about their love life. While other workers were working 110%. Coming from 5 years of previous retail experience, I’ve never seen such horrible systems put in place to run a company, as well as the amount of turnaround for staff. After finding a new job with proper systems put into place, proper, scheduling and work life balance where you would be able to have a weekend day off some times, it’s shocking remembering my time at JD. My mental health and well-being went the lowest it’s ever been due to work, and my physical health fell behind too.

Only took a month to realize the state the company is in. Management are new to management type positions and lack experience and employees are young and unmotivated. Regardless of the company starting up in Canada recently, there seems to be a lack of any structure. No training provided but you are expected to know everything. With the management being young in age and in management experience, most have began to let it get to their heads and internal affairs among the team has began to arise due to power trips. 

Above all, not a place for the faint of heart among those who love sneaker culture due to the backdooring of product. Management puts anticipated drops behind closed doors where they can reserve personal pairs and pack inventory hidden from cameras to be mass sold to resellers through the back door. No integrity for shoe culture and I am afraid these transactions are also approved by management above just store managers.

In JD you work constant long days and get paid £4.57 an hour if your under 18.  Your spoke to as if your a child and don’t know what your doing and always spoke to with a condescending tone from the older staff and management.  At first they’ll be all nice to you and then once your in for a few months you see them whisper and talk and always know things before they happen.  The management are constantly on there phones and hardly do any work and always making the young workers do all the work.  Staff who’s been there for years will stand in the office and talk for hours while there’s three 17 year olds running the shop.  You don’t get your staff discount until your trials over, so don’t be pulled in by it.  It’s alright for older staff and management to talk but as soon as you decided to have a chat your being told to go back to work and shouted at.  There’s always favouritism and don’t recommend working here if you want to have a social life and be treated with respect.

The only good thing that came from working at JD sport was the associates treating eachother like family. Management was fine and then became horrendous due to head office constantly hiring externals and not doing more in house promotions. Wasted hours given to store and assistant manager who didn't deserve it and don't train their associates. They're used to be structure but now is chaotic and lousy. People travel out of the city to come work and aren't given a 15 min break but these managers get 45 mins and 8 hr shifts when they can't operate a store properly. No growth for those who deserve the management position. I don't even remember the last time a ever was given a 8 hr shift. So many great associates and managers when I was hired left due to the ludacris acts made. Lastly,  stop with the relacing of shoes, it's a waste of time and we don't get paid extra for that useless task.

This company does not appreciate their staff. I’ve been working here for almost 2 years as a supervisor and no raise. The only reason I got 50 cent more is because the min. wage went up. Store managers and higher managers don’t know what they’re doing. They are all over the place. They’ll blame you and make you fix their mistake. Shoe releases; they don’t priotize their employee but they priotize resellers instead, with discount. This is a company that you wouldn’t want to go above & beyond for because they don’t appreciate you. Breaks are only 30 mins. If you ask for a 15 min break, they’ll question you. If you’re sick and want to go home early they will say “just wear a mask. It’s ok” but the manager themselves calls in sick, comes to work late, leaves work early. You’ll see the staff come to work with a sad face. It’s not a job that you look forward to. The only good thing about my workplace are my coworkers. Nothing else.

 I worked on my own time as a visual merchandiser. So I would do what I want really while still doing my tasks for the day. I ended up switching to a sales associate later on as I did not like having that much work load compared to other employees there. I felt like I was doing sooo much for the same pay as a sales associate or back of house worker that barely did anything. I think it was a great job and chill job at the start but then the Management was horrible. This one manager ruined the whole experience for many employees, causing us to quit. Very passive aggressive, we tried to go to HR about it as she already had many complains in the 2 months it was opened but they never did anything about it. I would recommend and go back to the job if they change up their management 

Amazing company to work for as it is brand new in Canada. Upper management needs to change as most of us store managers and associates do not respect them. They change their minds all the time with policies, not enough given to the staff in terms of discount especially on new releases. We work extremely hard only to get disappointing news from Upper management which includes LP that we aren’t doing our job. We use to have managers that actually cared about the business and they let them go! HR should be investigated with favouritism and choosing what emails of concerns to view. Budgets are through the roof and impossible for you to get your Incentive of a bonus! The company needs to do better by hiring people that are familiar with retail sports, know how to manage people, know the community and who shops with them. Get rid of those that team up against employees and treat managers and employees better. 

The lack of seriousness towards good employees and their development, big favouritism, lack of respect from HO employees toward retail employees. Hidden informations. Your good work, achieving targets, building strong sales team will be rewarded as more work or you will be move in another store to fix it. 
No calm moments, communications from HO is missing and no-one will take accountability for something they can control.
Once your store is open, good luck to have help. Their focus is always on the next store and not in the existing stores. RMs and DMs has too many stores and too much on their plates.
No support on problematic employees or non-performing members of the team as they want to protect turnover.

Do NOT work there, the managers do not care about their employees and only care about doing sales, the managers do not help you and expect you to have your life revolve around working there. Even if you are payed minimum wage, they put so much pressure on you, we have no commissions and constantly pressured to do more sales and fire you if you don’t make enough. The staff is nice but that’s about it. The female supervisors are always payed way less than the male supervisors, even if the male supervisors are new. The managers will genuinely ignore you when you need their help or need to speak to them about something. Do not work there, it’s a headache for such low pay and the management is unfair with their employees.

Reaching the sale goal on a dry day

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's alright. I personally like the fashion wear of JD Sports which made me learn more about it and help customers out with preferences. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Walk in, clock in for your shift, get the head set and go to the sales floor. help out with customers. Closing we clean up the environment and organize for the morning shift people.
