JYSK

Worked for JYSK for 3 years and embarrassed to say that I worked there for that long. Here is a summary of JYSK: 

JYSK has no interest providing high quality customer service. JYSK is more worried about the store conditions, and stacking product up to the rafters, where no one can reach. You can tell what kind of place this is once you walk in. You will not be greeted, and will have to go on an expedition in order to find employees willing to help. Woefully short staffed at all times. Do not provide a cleaners to clean store, the workers are basically glorified janitors. 

JYSK head office is filled with Family members/lifers, who are grossly out of touch with the day to day operations at store level. Most have never worked for other organizations, and have no idea what "normal" is. It borders on being a cult like operation. Have witnessed upper management ask store managers to cover up their arm tattoos by wearing long sleeves. Even Police organizations do not require this. They will fly a group of grown adults out to meetings in Vancouver, refuse to pay them travel time (while acting like theyre doing YOU a favor), and make them sit for 10+ hours, in their work uniforms complete with name badge LOL. That doesn't happen at other organizations. CEO loves to play make believe and has a god complex. CEO has only ever worked for JYSK and his skill set is better suited to run a lemonade stand or a street meat cart. 

Every resource is stretched laughably thin at JYSK. Have issues with employees and escalate them to HR? You're on your own to figure it out. They have no solutions, and they do not look to back management. 

JYSK does not invest in their employees. They do not provide any sort of educational advancement, training courses, etc. There is no pension. There is no profit sharing aside from a measly bonus, that is near impossible to obtain. They provide the minimum breaks/vacation time set out by the government. There are no paid sick days. There are no floater days.44 hour weeks, 47.5 including breaks. You will be shamed if you aren't putting in 50. JYSK offers the bare minimum, and those are the caliber of employees that they attract. 

The products that JYSK offer are low grade. Be prepared to apologize on a daily basis to customers, for their items missing parts once they take home and unbox. 95% of the products are made shipped from CHINA, and arrive broken/missing parts. JYSK is constantly chasing their tail. JYSK is not a proactive company, they are reactive. They are unable to identify issues before they happen, and are always behind the curve. All JYSK systems (inventory, signage, intranet, tills) are archaic. There are constant tech issues, and tech support is rarely available. 

JYSK warehouse is very unsafe. Warehouse workers are young males, who basically provide slave labour. Lifting heavy furniture boxes (over 100 LBS) by themselves. There are no hours in the budget to help them, even when the boxes say 2 person lift. JYSK is not concerned with the safety of their workers. Workers constantly throwing their backs out. 

JYSK has a very high turnover rate. JYSK does not realize that they are operating a business in North America, and not Europe. JYSK will fight against giving you a raise, once you get a promotion. 

The only "pro" about working at JYSK, is that you will appreciate your next employer that much more. If you are going to work at JYSK, treat it as temp work. Save your energy. JYSK doesn't invest in their employees, so don't bother investing your time/energy in JYSK. They’re a complete and utter disgrace.

I'm still working here and am three months into the job. The training here is very subpar; after one day of cleaning the store, you're practically left to fend for yourself. I had few problems with this, though, since my coworkers are all very friendly, which is why I say that your experience depends on who you're working with. The staff at my store are all willing to help, though sometimes its hard when it gets busy. I'm very thankful for this, because I sincerely recommend you don't apply if the location you're applying to has less attentive workers.

Like I said, I'm three months into the job, but I still have no clue what I'm talking about sometimes. There have been multiple occasions where I ask a question and something else comes up before it gets answered, and I never get taught on the topic. My section includes bedding and furniture, but the only training I received in either area was a one-time walk around in bedding. I was recently trained in till, which was interrupted half way through to put stock away, and I was put on till the next night with only the knowledge of how to do basic card and cash transactions, no idea how to do returns, look up items, print a price check, or even the basic duties a till person should do, like counting till and related paperwork at the end of the night. Warehouse workers do most of the heavy lifting, but some days Warehouse workers have to take a day off or just aren't booked. I was put in the awkward position one day of having to explain that no one else was available to ask and I had no idea what the standard operation of pick up was regarding paperwork. Afterward, I was promised to be taught the operation, as all employees should know, but I still don't. Thankfully, like I said, I had very few issues other than one time occurrences as long as someone is available to help.

Some days are physically exhausting, and some work is fairly dangerous. Ladders are very much involved in the way we work. Sometimes we have to get very heavy things from way up, for example, I once took heavy wood and leather ottomans off the third shelf with an unsteady ladder. The heaviest stuff is usually left to the warehouse guys, but sometimes it's just you. Sales associates also have to put away all the stock. There is no other shift to do it overnight, so on trailer days and often the two days after, its overwhelmingly crowded with boxes on the floor. I usually spend every trailer day completely on the ladder, hiding extra stock, as we always seem to get things that we already have too much of.

Thankfully, the store employees and management are all very understanding, and because of them I truly enjoy spending time at work, working with them and talking to them on slow days. But, if you have trouble with physical labour, trouble talking to people, don't think the employees at your location are as accepting, don't want to work on till (everyone has to,) or have trouble with troubleshooting on where to get information, I wouldn't recommend applying here.

It is EMBARRASSING to say that I worked here for 3 years. 

Management was horrible. They love to undermine and make fun of you especially near other employees to show that they have power over you. I was a cashier and also worked on the floor. Corporate and management has no idea on how a good store should look. Layout of the store was horrific, not to mention staff and bathrooms were so disgusting it felt like a prison. I would work on the floors to do stock and they would get so much products in that they had no room for, this led to random products everywhere and overly stacked shelves that looked horrible. 

Safety at this company was not to mention horrific. They had NO concerns at all for staff safety. I literally don't know how they passed the occupation work and safety test. Warehouse employees had to use STAIRS and carry BIG boxes over their heads and walked down the stairs. This could lead to so many problems and there wasn't even any safety gear provided. Staff on the floors had to carry HUGE ladders that were heavy around the store to get products on top shelves it was ridiculous. No safety training was provided at all from the 3 years I was there. 

The only good thing about working there was you could get full time hours if you needed them. But be prepared, they will never give you any time off you request. Managers love to tell you that you're entitled to time off but then say that they can't give it to you because it's "blackout" and they'd be understaffed. That isn't a me problem- it is the MANAGERS job to cover you. If you want to call in - well you CAN'T. They'll make you come in even if you feel unwell and will make you provide a doctors note. If you decide you can't come in - be prepared for them to punish you by not giving you ANY shifts at all just because they like to hold that power over you. 

The basically make you a janitor because they're too cheap to hire a cleaning company to clean the bathrooms and vaccum. Typically at any retail job it's the MANAGERS job to keep those clean. But nope, you will be scrubbing off diarrhea on the walls for MINIMUM WAGE. 

They overwork you, undermine you, and have no regards for your time off and safety for minimum wage. If you love yourself, don't work here. Any other retail company is better than this garbage company. 

I joined during the Covid period, during which the company showed great care for its employees. The IT infrastructure was quickly implemented to allow everyone to work from home full-time, and HR developed and communicated new health policies quickly. Since then, the head office has adopted flexible hours and a hybrid working schedule, reducing commute time and improving work-life balance.

The company holds informative sessions quarterly to provide updates on the business, which brings colleagues closer to the business. The company also has annual conferences and golf events, which are great experiences and opportunities to meet colleagues nationwide.  

Pro
-	Flat corporate structure where you can always speak up and the management team is often available.
-	The company’s goal and the expectation are communicated clearly
-	Great internal IT support and infrastructure to allow remote. 
-	Excellent opportunities to learn within the accounting/Finance department, as cross-training is one of the key goals.

Cons

-	The company culture and values were not communicated well to new employees, and it would take some time to understand and adapt. I heard HR had developed a new onboarding process, so there may be an improvement.
-	There is a Lack of interactive activities within the department during the time in the office, despite team-building dinners and events.
-	Unlike in Europe, brand awareness in Canada is limited in towns where a store is present.
-	Despite modernizing most office tools, the ERP is outdated and inefficient. Sometimes, it creates issues that require extensive time and effort to fix.



Working at JYSK Canada has been a great experience that I genuinely appreciate and value. The company’s commitment to its employees is evident in various aspects. They offer attractive salary and benefits package and a RRSP matching program, which shows JYSK’s dedication to supporting its employees’ financial future.

This, coupled with the regular team-building activities, ranging from axe throwing and laser tag to lunch and dinner outings, fosters a strong sense of camaraderie among coworkers. It’s refreshing to be part of a team that is not only supportive and positive but also knows how to have fun together.

There are monthly and weekly meetings that not only keep us informed about company developments but also provide an excellent platform for showcasing individual progress and accomplishments. Feeling trusted and empowered is crucial in any workplace, and I love that JYSK promotes a culture of autonomy, allowing me the freedom to tackle tasks in my own way, without the constant feeling of someone peering over my shoulder.

Moreover, the company’s dedication to employee growth and development is commendable. The availability of educational opportunities upon request means that we are continually challenged to expand our skill set and evolve professionally.

In conclusion, JYSK Canada is a fantastic place to work, thanks to its competitive compensation, engaging team activities, supportive and enjoyable coworkers, and a culture that promotes trust and autonomy. I am grateful to be part of such an encouraging and dynamic work environment.

The day starts with anxiety, with more focus on tasking rather than customer service or selling. The manager is always busy on the phone inside the office no matter how much workload is on the team and your day ends with blaming for all the mess created by the manager's favorite lazy employee.
 
During my 4 years with this company, I have learned a lot of good things (of course at other locations and with other managers) but the main thing I've learned is to stay away from managers' pets if you don't want to become a target for the manager and be treated horribly every day.

 Very poor management, favoritism, and no right to speak up about the district manager's favorite people, no respect from the manager and district manager no matter how hard you work and how loyal you are to the company. They talk about companies' core values but none of them are applicable to the upper management. Store transfer is the biggest trap under this management, they treat you as a slave and never allow you to raise concerns about the wrong. If you are okay accepting wrong things and practices, you are fine.

The hardest part of the job is different rules for different people (favorite/non-favourite) employees. The district manager and store manager don't know what they actually want from you. The manager has neither knowledge nor decision-making power even for a simple thing. The store manager comes to help only when there is a visit from head office and is always ready to take credit for other employee's hard work.

A usual JYSK shift starts with counting cash and setting up the till for the beginning of the day. You assist customers at the till, clean around the till, and sometimes stock till products. If closing, you will sweep and prepare the till for the next day which includes counting cash and "cashing out". Management is abysmal and make the work environment unbearable. You are expected to know everything after 1 or 2 training shifts which wouldn't be a huge deal if you were allowed to ask questions without being yelled at or patronized. Almost everyone at the United Boulevard location is related through marriage or other familial relations. This created such an awkward and tense environment as spouses would bring their marital issues to work and take it out on the rest of the team. My final thought is anyone with even half an ounce of dignity would steer clear of this company. The products are cheap, the management is awful and the job is so boring you'll have to stop yourself from falling asleep every shift.

When I first stepped into the doors of JYSK, I had been impressed with the cleanliness of the showroom floor. I did look at the lack there of merchandising and how things flowed. I handed a floor manager my resume. I began calling when I had not heard from them for a week. I finally got a hold of the manager and she agreed to meet me with me for an interview. 
When I showed 30 minutes early for the interview, I had the pleasure of meeting her, and I knew the job was mine. I had only applied to be an associate and within the two weeks of my training, i was promoted to floor manager. Yes only two weeks and i had proven I had strong customer service skills, and I had strong judge of character. I enjoyed my job greatly, and took it seriously. I enjoyed training others in merchandising. Teaching them the value in product placement, and how something that seemed to look cheap can look like a pirates treasure. As a floor manager, I had to make sure employees on my shift where completing their assigned tasks for the day, and holding them accountable when not complete. Hardest part of my job was being the hammer. I had the guts and confidence to solve problems, and hand discipline when required. The best part of my job was knowing that I helped create a great team, and make future leaders in whatever career they chose in their paths.

What is the best part of working at the company?
There’s literally no good thing working for this company, and I say this after believing the better of people and a think called second chances. My first day, I got told about the next models are “lower cost” quality and that the older versions are better. I thought it was a fluke, and just figured bad timing.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Almost every aspect of the job, from the constant mixed commands from different people, to the constant scolding from different people, and no room to grow, you get trapped in a certian groove and get forced to live it every day. This job as legitimately given me some trauma, that’s the best way to say it.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Hostile. Felt like you were forced to walk on egg shells, they really enforce the “minimum wage pay= minimum wage job, so sell sell sell, you’ll get nothing and be happy for it”

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day consists of at least getting told to do one thing, get scolded for doing said thing, get told to do something else, get scolded for that and then get scolded for ignoring the first task

The customers are fantasitic, management is …. Yikes.

What has kept me at JYSK over the years is the team/family environment. There are numerous people that have not only become friends, but like family. From in your own store, to other local stores and head office as well- the JYSK team is an amazing group!

There is a huge variety of work from inventory management, to stocking/merchandising, continual learning & development and never a lack of things to keep yourself or your team busy. Being a manager at JYSK is a very hands-on job and most tasks involve you working with and being part of the Team. There is a small amount of office work, but a successful manager will be on the sales floor and on their feet 90% of the time or more.

Seasonal change-overs tend to be a more difficult time of year, with fiscal year-end being the trickiest (coincides with end of Christmas, Summer change-over and full store year-end counts).

JYSK is a dynamic company, with plenty of room for advancement and promotions given the right attitude and work ethic/drive. Many colleagues from the stores have moved into lead roles with-in head office including customer care, loss prevention and buying.
