Janus Academy

The pay is low and not worth it. A typical day at work involved taking care of the students with a range of development delays & autism. A range of things needed to be done, including ABA therapy, personal hygiene, and accommodating students on their community-based activities. 

Staff experiences high burnout because of the stress of this job. I was always sick and not feeling well. You have to assist with a lot that is NOT in your job description! Even things that should be apart of the Managements' job description. But you are expected to anyways due to low staff. Working here was extremely stressful I would not be surprised if some of the employees have PTSD and trauma associated with the kind of work here. 

The majority of the staff are not trained upon onboarding and are expected to support other employees under extreme pressure and stress. This can be very intimidating for new individuals on the job and inconvenient for those who have been on the job longer who require that help during high stress, crisis times/situations. If there were better training, the staff would be better prepared for difficult and high-risk situations.

The students here are highly behavioral. It will leave you with your hair pulled out, bite marks, and bruises. Yes, it's apart of the job, but the stress of it alone is a lot, especially when you are not supported. Other organizations have better methods of de-escalating behaviors without getting hurt/minimal damage—staff "train" other staff at Janus. In my opinion, the training is not training, and it's not enough to prepare you for the harsh realities of this job or high-risk situations.

The work culture was VERY TOXIC; unnecessary drama, cliquey staff, rude behavior, coworkers were constantly belittling and gossiping about their coworkers, management, and individuals higher up in the organization. Even the students should be treated better as well. Besides a toxic work environment, this place is not a diverse organization, and they are not culturally sensitive or aware. If you are a POC (Person of color), I highly recommend staying out of this place. No one is accountable for their racial microaggressions, attitude, and nasty behavior. 

Management is underwhelming and quite frankly does not have the experience or qualifications to be in the position of management. Janus lacks structure, organization, and funding. Many employees at Janus spend their own money and resources, making the job more fun and exciting for students. Again, that shouldn't be expected but is done due to a lack of funding. The school is not taking seriously by some guardians. Many students are sent without their prepared resources for the day, and most of the time, sent while sick. Being in a school space, of course, other students and staff get sick due to other students having colds, flu, and other sicknesses.

On top of already stressful position; management, lack of support, and the workplace culture was the hardest part of the job! Best of good luck job hunting, but reconsider!

When you start at Janus, the training is intensive theory based practices that revolve around ABA, autism, Janus procedures and policies, and overall job performance. Quickly after the sit-down training, you are in the classroom with the students. This can be extremely over-whelming for most people, but there are many staff around to support and get you through the first couple of days. Working in any school for children with Autism is difficult, stressful and draining. At Janus Academy the job is also rewarding, purposeful and fulfilling. 

Janus Academy changes the lives of the students and families that enroll. They do this through the staff that are hired- through their dedication, hard work and persistence. The staff at Janus Academy work together for a greater purpose-- the education of the students in the school. Of course there can be gossip, difficult days, and stressful situations. But at the end of the day, everyone is there for the students and their success. 

The day starts at 8:00am with a morning meeting, or prep time in the classroom. At 8:40am the students begin to arrive and the day starts. Throughout the day, you are paired with 1, 2, or 3 students working on programming that is formulated from the coordinator for your classroom. The students go to various activities throughout the day that you help support them in. You get a 15 minute break, plus a 45 minute lunch. At 3:00pm the students begin to leave and the remainder of the day is spent in the classroom doing cleaning, or prep time until you go home at 4pm. 

You learn a lot working at Janus Academy. There is a lot of training in the principles of ABA, autism, and hands-on training throughout your time spent there. 

I loved and hated working here. I love what Janus academy is doing for this demographic of children and adults - however my love for it was enveloped with the horrible toxic environment amongst co-workers , terrible pay for the amount of work you are doing , lack of confidence in Workers Comp. ( I had a back injury written down as preexisting when it happened at work) , it was nearly impossible to take a day off because there was no guarantee of a sub coming in that had experience with children with aggressive behavioural tendencies …..I loved the kids at Janus - but it was a terrible place to work for my mental and physical health….

The typical day at Janus Academy was pretty relaxed with some hectic days but the staff with their team work made those days seem easier always having your back. I learned quite a bit from working there both about children with Autism and about myself.  The management team was great and always there to help and advice to grow and get better. Their training and workshops helped a lot. The hardest part of the job was to see the kids struggle sometimes whether it was emotionally or struggle to learn something but they never gave up. Strong kids. The most enjoyable part of the job was interacting with the kids and seeing them smile and be happy and sometimes to become a kid with them.

This is a  challenging job but unbelievably rewarding. It  can be tricky working with different personalities but being allowed the room to grow and learn myself is helpful. Support has improved over the years as well the effort to make it a happy work place. It can however become very cliquey at various different levels. Behaviors can be challenging however I always feel supported when that occurs. 

The hardest part of the job is managing staff and passive aggressive employees. The best part of the job is being able to learn and grow and seeing our students reach their goals. At the end of the day, seeing them succeed is the only thing that matters.

I began working at Janus Academy in September as a Certified Classroom teacher. My experience so far has been nothing short of amazing! I can honestly say I have never worked at a school with such an amazing atmosphere and caring staff! The staff at Janus are kind, patient, knowledgeable, and supportive; but most importantly they are all 100% committed to helping the students reach their full potential. When I first began here, I was welcomed with open arms and provided with training to set me up for a successful year. I truly feel blessed to be part of such an amazing organization, and to witness all the accomplishments the students are making!

First off, working with people with disabilities can be a very rewarding experience. There are positive experiences working here as well as a FEW kind people that support you. 

HOWEVER, you will have a high work load when it comes to working with students, be constantly critiqued by management, given little help when dealing with aggressive behaviors daily, rarely appreciated for your hard work or asked for your input. 

The hourly rate of $18 does not match the amount of tasks you are responsible for... with no raises or opportunities to grow if that is something you are seeking. 

Janus Academy was the first school to offer me a position after my undergraduate degree and I have not regretted saying 'yes'. Just one week after working here, I realized the impact the school makes in the lives of the children in attendance. I have also seen the effective of using the procedures of ABA to help manage challenging behavior. The management team are experienced, knowledgeable and most importantly, willing to discuss concerns and successes with. 4 years later and it continues to be a fulfilling experience working here! 

Management neglects Classroom Teachers' unprofessional behaviour.  A CT acted like a completely different person when there were staff that are in a higher position than them - much more respectful and considerate. Behind closed doors, me and my co-workers saw neglectful and disrespectful attitude in the class. As well as modelling poor anger management and self regulation. People with Autism are hyper sensitive in general. Therefore, keeping angry and unhappy staff is just unfair and sad for this school...

I have worked in Janus since February 2016 and it is a great place to work. I had worked with autism in the past, mainly when I was in England, but it was with other disabilities. Janus Academy has two schools and three adult pods that concentrate on autism and the spectrum of the disorder. Janus works well with creating plans and programs to help increase skills and make possible the chances of the students or clients volunteering in the community.
