The challenging clients will be the least of your concerns here. Typically can be busy, some downtime which is nice but you are either WAY understaffed or WAY overstaffed, very rarely anything in between, Management portrays this "open door" mindset however concerns continually go unresolved including but not limited to staff and client safety, staffing issues, work/life balance and many more. The workplace tends to be quite clique-y and is akin to high school drama. A lot of he said, she said with little to no investigation or support to resolve underlying issues. It is nice to work somewhere that you feel you are making a difference in the lives of the people you are supporting but the stress and toxicity of the workplace is hardly worth it. In all honesty, save yourself the trouble and work somewhere that your efforts will be appreciated.

Poorly managed, low salary, not a very supportive environment. Management is pure toxicity and unfortunately has surrounded themselves with others who won't stand up to them. Prepare to be micromanaged beyond belief. Manager is a control freak who will belittle you and gaslight you into thinking you are not good enough for an entry-level job. It’s pretty clear that unless you are willing to turn a blind eye to the toxicity you will be treated like you’re less than. It’s astounding that management is able to stay in their position but I guess that’s what happens when you manipulate.

The biggest issues come down to the nature of part-time staff. You pick up the shifts that the full-time staff don’t have which results in many graveyard shifts and weekends. This would be fine but you are not given any of the benefits and time-off, despite often working the same or just under the amount as the full-time staff. Overnight shifts are also not given any further compensation which is outrageous. 

Typical day at work was chaotic and there are too many micro-managers. Safety concerns are never addressed appropriately or timely and if they are, you’re also reprimanded for raising them. Staff can be competitive and scapegoat others to get ahead. Other times colleagues do below the minimum requirements of the job and don’t get disciplined but if you are excelling at your job, you face reprisals. It is incredibly stressful. If you want to go into housing, don’t choose JHS.

Hours were promised. Then only available hours were overnights. Don’t waste your time. Boring job. Low pay. No benefits and you work alone. Management has no clue. Offered 16 hours as part time then only available hours are overnights. No flexibility unless you can only work overnights. Guys are cool, management lies to your face. 

Not a great place to work Extreamly Toxic management gossiping about everyone clients and staff management laking in emotional intelligence the majority of work gets put on front line staff the management no positive feed back or encouragement given

Great place to begin your career in Criminal Justice with constant opportunities to advance within the company. Management truly cares about their staffs experience and supports in whatever decisions you make on shift when exercising discretion.

John Howard Society of Ottawa is a great place to work, they are an agency who REALLY do care about their clients. They have lots of different programs you can work in from forensics to youth mental health. 
There are always job postings for internal staff to apply for and a lot of full time positions that come up. 

John Howard Society of Ottawa is a great place to work! They have tons of options for different programs to work in, and many options to move up. Since a lot of funding is government based wages can be low but still well above minimum wage. 

Great opportunity to develop skills in the field, very accommodating to student schedule. I loved the meaningful work that i was able to engage in and change the lives of the residents i worked with.
