I work in an Emergency Youth Shelter housing a max of 5 youth at a time. My job includes case management duties including weekly meetings with social services, meeting the youth's everyday educational/cultural/physical/spiritual/emotional needs, making their appointments, setting them up with counselling/therapy when necessary, being their advocate, and assisting their Social Workers with longterm placement plans. The hardest part of my job is seeing a youth who is unable to meet their fullest potential due to addictions, gang affiliations, and other issues that prevent them from wanting to make changes to their lifestyle. The most enjoyable and fulfilling part of my job is being able to make a difference in the lives of the youths that I meet, even if it is in the smallest way. My job shows the kids I work with that even if they feel like the world is against them and nothing is going their way, I am on their side and I will do everything that I can to help them succeed in their goals. This job has taught me many different things, but one of the biggest has been to accept and meet people where they're at, and to celebrate the little victories. My managers provide me with a lot of freedom to make decisions about how to support the youth I see; and they alway support and back my decisions.

I enjoy JHSS in theory and the clients are amazing however the practice is much different! 

The office is full of toxicity, cliques and nepotism. Staff are kept on that shouldn’t be despite multiple complaints and concerns. Staff abuse company vehicles and credit cards for their own satisfaction and get away with it. The office does not feel safe as concerns are not heard or taken seriously. At the end of the day it is the clients who suffer from mismanaged funds to staff. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Management is never around. It’s too bad if you actually needed them. But they don’t help anyway 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The toxicity, gossipy managers,favoritisms and lack of support 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic. Management was more worried about how the public perceived the organization. They provided no real help for clients. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Trying to assist clients with minimal resources

The John Howard Society is a provincial run organization ran by a board.  The CEO was poor at communication and had no clear vision or direction for the organization as a whole.  The work they do with youth and the community is excellent and very rewarding but stressful at times.  Since my departure, they have changed a large part of their board, hired a whole new leadership team and seem to be doing very well

Truly the best job I have ever had, everyone in this facility are so sweet , caring and supportive. They really make sure you are ok in all aspects! So much love and support it was the hardest job I have had to leave.
