I worked for JCI Saskatoon for about 5 years. I originally accepted a position as a foreman and was given a good wage through the union agreement. Presented with many challenges which I enjoyed, I was rewarded for good achievements financially. A majority of your coworkers will be very pleasant to work with. The company itself is very profit and growth driven, as to be expected for any public traded company. They will do whatever it takes to generate revenue for their shareholders, a good front is put up for ethics and safety, but not perhaps overly truthful when reviewed from within. The greater focus on profit will come over ethics. If you are willing to look the other way a little or wear rose colored glasses... you certainly have an opportunity to advance.
Things to beware; safety is preached by leadership, but not followed by the same leadership (false sense of safety). You will be provided with more than ample safety equipment, but no one to instruct or guide you in the safe use of it (local all the way to the regional safety managers). You will be given a DVD to watch, that will be your safety orientation and you will sign a document/release form of you being oriented.
Leadership will "read" what they are to say to you, coming from the corporate head office during annual events (Vision Week), which perhaps shows that leadership doesn't buy what they are trying to sell???
Overall, they simply lack on being organized. From new hire training/orientation all the way to the execution of work. That lack of organization leads to lack of profit on jobs, and that can lead to a lack of work/hours for you as a hourly employee. There can be division between employees and work, two employees of equal capability, one will get overtime while the other may only get 20-30 hours. Management will play this game with you until you either receive a lay off or quit to go elsewhere, I witnessed this on several occassions. Like a fool; I was fore warned by previous employees, and in disbelief thought the several instances to be isolated.... I too am living proof!!!!
The longest lasting employees are the ones that have worked for a company before JCI has bought it... that's how they claim to have long-term employees... the rest are managers!!! Have you got what it takes????

This place is set up and ran so bad that they lose employees and managers on a regular. They don't care about their employees. They take advantage of anyone they can. 
Starting with if they put you on the split shift you work 12s so your of at 6 pm. while once you reach 80 hrs and your desperate enough to allow them to make you work an extra 8 and then eventually get paid overtime. Mean while they have Monday to Friday that the managers, leads, and a few employees work Monday to Friday and are off at 430 pm they also collect 2 hours overtime everyday. So not only are they home at a decent time they have the chance to work a full 6 days and get paid properly. Shift you will be lucky you get 5 days in a row and you only make o.t on the one day. That's why most guys refuse to work over time accept for the people who need to do overtime while the get screwed by this company. 
The pays just average as it is people quit for the better managed and paying jobs.
Benefits are garbage here. If your a higher up you get the privilege of selecting better benefits or if you work in the office. Other places offer way better benefits than  here.
Definitely don't come here to start an apprenticeship they got it completely backwards making you work a year and if you are lucky they sign you and make you work longer. Everywhere else with in 3 months your signed and they give you the hours you worked.
This place is so dysfunctional that they have no organization for you to complete or start a job. All the parts are either hidden or not ordered on time and the managers /supervisors are busy blaming each other so you'll be asked to finish a job when you have to argue to get material you need to do the job. 
Not only that while your leads and supervisors along managers have all gone home at 430 and don't work weekends like they make you; you are left doing the project on your own and can't get the parts you need even if they had it because the parts department won't give you what you need anyway. 
It be a better place if they actually treated the employees with respect and organized jobs properly. 
The person that responds to these clearly doesn't work outside the office or knows what happens.




I was hired as B welder. Was only one doing all their 2” spools. I worked hard while there. Pumping out 150” consistently daily. (Which more then exceeds their expectations in the first place). Had quality work with next to zero repairs. Was putting in 90-100 hrs every pay period. Thought I was doing more than part for these fools. 

Only problem was, I had to sometimes either come hr late or leave hr early cause I had to pick drop off/pick up my kids. (This was just my personal situation that I was in after going through divorce). I had mentioned this to management. But got the vibe they didn’t care about my situation nor did they offer to try and work with me in any way. Pretty much said “that’s your problem and this is our policy”. 

Which is understandable from their point of view. But felt they could have at least tried to work with me as well, especially given the fact I was putting in the effort to come in on my days off and still was putting 90-100 hrs every pay period. And that I was one of the more productive welders there also. Obviously they didn’t take any of factors into consideration.

At the end of the day, just felt really unappreciated for my efforts and so I gotta out there as soon as I could. 

Very weird work culture they have there, and supervision weren’t that helpful or really cared.

Another con the was the schedule. Not your typical Monday-Friday for in town work. The  2 days on/2 days off/3 days on/2 days off working 12s too, wasn’t really ideal. And they obviously do this cause they don’t like paying OT. Also given the fact that you don’t even get OT till after 88 hrs straight time. So do the math yourself. 

All in all, if your older person looking for easy paycheck looking towards retirement. This is prob good job for you. But if you young and money hungry. I wouldn’t recommend it. 

Foreman is a “yes” man and only cares about his own butt. Plant manager has lil man syndrome too. 



I think working for a fortune 500 company in technology is always a winner. If you like structured work environment company leading edge training programs. Working with professional and skilled people. then Johnson Controls Ltd is a good option . The only setback i would say for such an established company is that the management and technical support structure of the company is very well structured and organized. and Management in such a large organization will have multiple stakeholders to report to , so there are many stakeholders involved and if you missed a day off work of reveal weakness in your performance, then it will come out very quickly through the stakeholder meeting and review process and you will mostly end up losing or damaging your career for your mistakes and mishaps. It is like working for the military or government agencies where every step you take is being reaudited and scrutinized so my suggestion is to take your job seriously and ensure all the stakeholders involved is satisfied with your performance in order to receive a good review and advancement opportunities. furthermore, because of such an organized structure, people social skills are fundamentally important to lead you to advance to the next level of your career.

Company Culture:  For the most part the place is ran with the mindset of getting units out of the bay doors.  They will preach quality and safety, but you'll figure out pretty quick that the priority is the bottom line.  Fast paced workload, unorganized and always playing catch-up.  This leads to an environment prone to mistakes *Hot Shots*, and over-producing parts.  If you enjoy the grind of a never ending workload, being disposable, getting under-paid, fighting yearly for a review, and look forward to the "Running around like a headless chicken feel" then apply here.

Assembly/Fabrication:  Wear your PPE, be mindful that management doesn't have your safety as a priority, and set a reminder for your yearly review.

Trades:  Great place for gaining experience, getting your tiers and leaving for a better place.

Office workers:  They seemed happy.   

From the very first day at silence aire there is absolutely no training, no guidance, or even a clear direction in terms of what you are supposed to be doing and how you should accomplish it. They try very hard to achieve an assembly line type of manufacturing process,  however due to over staffing issues, a lack of materials, and supervisors/superintendents who are completely clueless, you spend most of your day trying to "look busy". 

"Look busy" is about the only input you'll ever receive from a supervisor, I'd actually challenge any of the supervisors there to describe what they're building and the steps needed to build it. 

Silent aire is also wildly over staffed. This leads to employees arguing amongst themselves as to who should do what and when. Most of the time you're just better off trying to "look busy" or just go and hide.
They could probably handle loosing 50-70% of their employees and not even notice a change in production. 

Truthfully Silent Aire isn't really a job, it's just a blow hard competition.  All you gotta do is stroke the supervisors ego a little and they'll absolutely love you. Supervisors have absolutely no idea what anyone does or how to do anything so you don't even need to work, easiest money you'll even make.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Ability to work from home which provides the perfect work/life balance. I also enjoy the freedom to design my day. Management still manages but we are in charge of our work load. As long as things get done on time and KPI’s are met we are left to organize and execute our job responsibilities on our own.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Sometimes multiple people require something from you all at the same time and you get pulled in several different directions. This is where it pays to stay organized and proficient in multi tasking.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Awesome! We all work together and help each other out whenever we can. In our district we put on a Stampede breakfast, a Christmas pot luck and other social gatherings throughout the year.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
My day often includes answering and following up on emails, a few customer meetings, requesting approvals from our customers when billing exceeds their NTE amount. Sending reports to customers, answering phones on the help line and creating service calls when needed. Problem solving is also a large part of my day.

 This is one of the worst places I’ve personally ever worked. First of all, there pay structure is designed to pay the worker as little as possible. All the equipment they have there is no good, no one cares about each other. They say there motto is “doing it right the first time” but I don’t think there’s been one project we’ve completed that hasn’t had to be reworked like 80 times. They’ll send blueprints on the floor that don’t have engineer stamps on them. This place loves to do things the hard way. They are all for safety… expect for when it affects them. Then they will bend whatever rules they wish to get the job done. There’s absolutely no communication between the supervisors. I have never been with a company that buys the worst of the worst ppe… if your looking for a job, look somewhere else, there has been 4 people quit in the last 2 week. 2 people walked off their first day. There’s people here who aren’t getting paid what they are supposed to be getting paid. And after multiple attempts to contact the HR they have stopped replying to them. If you like reworking peoples mistakes, you might like this job, but I would 10/10 definitely not recommend working here 

I held the position of Engineer at the aforementioned organization. Upon my commencement, I was filled with enthusiasm and had an array of plans to enhance my skill set. Regrettably, the management left much to be desired. I observed numerous instances of discriminatory behavior. The treatment from the manager and executive team was far from professional, creating an atmosphere that did not reflect a typical professional environment. The opportunities for growth were scarce, particularly for those at a junior level. The work environment was notably uncomfortable. Executives often engage in loud, non-work-related conversations contributing to discomfort in an open workplace environment. Without delving into specifics, there were several occasions where my technical queries directed at my manager were overlooked, despite my manager's availability to engage in casual conversations about personal matters such as vacations with other team members.
 I hope this insight proves beneficial for anyone contemplating employment at this organization

What is the best part of working at the company?
Johnson Controls gave me a great start when I graduated.  Since then I've recieved a promotion every 3-5 years on average.  I have vacation, benefits and opportunity for growth.  I travel for work and I'm compensated for the KM that I drive.  They have a high standard of safety.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There are some tight deadlines at some times as we work in the construction field.  There are a lot of stakeholders on the projects with various goals.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
They promote learning and team building.  There is a BRAVO system where you can get points and redeam them for gifts like computers, monitors, pants, vacation, watches etc.  We often work in teams around project owners and people have an opporunity to grow over time.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Our day is geared around the construction project.  It can include device validation, programming field controllers and dealing with customers.  We travel to the jobsite and return at the end of the day.
