I'm surprised about the past reviews for JIBC here, it is not reflective of the workplace or the employees who work here. It is possible that it depends on your department but from my perspective (and opinion), lots of the JIBC employees that I have came across at the Justice Institute have worked here for over 10 years and they all could say great things about their position and the workplace culture. 

There are a number of factors that I would say JIBC is the best institution that I have worked for (and I worked in many from small private institutions to large universities). First, their salary (or pay) is above average in the market and they have great vacation benefits (20 paid days right off the bat plus winter break off which is another 7-8 days). They also offer a variety of paid professional developments to help their employees develop new skills and you are given a small percentage of fund to use if you would like to take courses at other institutions. Work hours are great, I also like the implementation of flex days and personal days for the times when you have to go to to the doctor, dentist, or when you just want a day to recharge. 

Lastly, I feel very respected in my role and I love the work that I do for the institution. I would recommend this workplace for anyone who is looking for a medium-sized institution and wants a good work-life balance. 

I can only speak about the department I worked in, which is the health sciences department. No one listens to what you have to say, and those that do, have no power to implement any of the changes you put forward. There is no discipline for those employees that bully others, create hurdles for other instructors, or harass students. Unless it becomes public, the JIBC doesn't seem to take appropriate action. I can say without a doubt the individual in charge of this department is not someone who should be in that position. Education has taken a hit, and I no longer wished to be a part of an organization that only cares to take the money of its students, instead of wanting to provide them with the best possible education. JIBC used to be known for being the best in its field, a great academic institution, it is no longer the case. Management IS to blame, as they do nothing to make changes, nor want to address the issues brought forward. The person at the top in management of the health sciences department needs to be replaced, ASAP. The politics of this place should be enough to keep you away, truly a toxic work environment. If you love to educate, then look elsewhere. The office politics alone, will turn you into someone you don't want to be.

Used to be a great place a few years ago. Staff used to feel proud of how the done benefited society. The pay rate is decent for most positions, when compared to other local institutes. Benefits for management positions are decent. Not so for union positions. Over the last few years management have increased their salaries so the salary gap has increased. Now it has a toxic culture, with high sick rate and turn over rate. Recent employee survey results show the how gender and race impact the employee satisfaction and experiences negatively - more so than typical Canadian workplaces. One department had a 100% sick rate due to stress and work demands resulting from poor management decisions. The managers who do have the the awareness, skills and knowledge to recognize and correct the problems, are too scared to "rock the boat" as they may be targeted too.

High salaries and excellent benefits for senior management positions. Decent salaries for union positions, but benefits are not so great, and are being eroded away with every new collective agreement negotiation. The union does not support union employees. This factors into the work culture, where the union staff are not valued and often mistreated. The management approach is outdated in most  areas. And especially so in Finance, Human Resources and Registration, where it's rather autocratic and often petty. This results in a high turn over, high sick rate, and unhealthy day to day working environments. Such a shame they are not able to practise what they teach. 
Some talented staff. Library staff are very helpful. Registration staff are amazing considering the call centre approach to student services.

Not too bad. Good work/life balance. Tons of PTO including extra time off during the holidays due to the school closing down between Christmas and New Year's. Good benefits. Place can be irritatingly beurocratic and is not very forward-thinking. A lot of things seem very outdated. Not a lot of growth opportunities. 

Enjoyed my job, work load wasn't too bad but did get quite busy at times. The admin staff is severely understaffed in all departments and HR takes forever to get back to you about assignment extensions so it is not that great if you are wanting something stable

Management is poor. You have to be lucky to get a good one. You will likely be overworked, no growth. Benefits are less than most other companies. Depending on your position you can work a hybrid schedule. Work place does offer EDO's

A collaborative and respectful workplace which values the contributions of all employees. Great support is provided for balancing work and lifestyle. Lots of support is available for professional development.

As others have noted...toxic work environment. Poorly managed, terrible HR practices. Many managers and directors are well passed their prime.  High turnover of staff doesn’t seem to enlighten anyone that the problem is most management

Great supervisor and good people to work with. I recommend JIBC to anyone starting in the IT field. The whole experience is good for someone starting in the IT field. I am currently over qualified for this job.
