I was hired to operate crane and when hired I spent the first 6 weeks riding around site with others. Truck driving, not operating. Then I was placed on a boom truck for 3 months and after this I was floated around site. Driving water/sand/gravel truck, sometimes loaders and lots of labouring, being over 60 y/o not a good time. The craning bosses are excellent, the dirt bosses not so much. I would end up having a different foreman every other night, sometimes for a week or two, not knowing who to report to was frustrating to say the least.
The day I was laid off, the foreman at the time forgot to tell me. This was a normal thing around there the foremen were always trying to impress their bosses and not caring for their fellow workers. Towards the end of my employment, which was mostly night shift I would do my job and head home early. I knew people on site that would hide on site to get their 12 hours, but not me. 
Is KGL good to work for, for me no. To many people looking out for themselves. Like any outfit there are good/bad foremen/bosses and politics. Oh and watch out for the "we have other projects you can go to" Just one big load of BS.


Setting up of and removing road closures as required by sub-contractors. Traffic safety is of the utmost standard in the industry, as road crews require proper buffers and lane closures to complete their tasks. Our team must also complete tasks safely and efficiently and teams must work together to provide a second set of eyes. 

Every individual team on the project is working towards the same goal and as such, they have each others' backs. Always willing to help anyone else out as needed to finish safely.

The job can be fairly physical at times and the hours some times long, but the end goal is always the same, and as such, this does not feel like a big CON to me.

Hands down the poorest run operation I've ever been a part of from hours changing regularly to engineers changing plans on the fly. They have great guys working here mainly craft and foreman but the guys in charge seem to have no idea from one day to the next due to lack of communication. concrete pour dates constantly change leaving employees no chance for relationships or family certain areas you work have a different schedule because the bosses in that area are imports and getting loa but local guys just do as your told dont ask questions. Would never ever recommend this job to anyone.

Always messing up pay.
Always late with the paystub. 
Dont ask them to fix your wrong pay because it is too hard for them to fix!  
No formal training from them.
Never had to hand in safety paperwork because they don't care about it!!
Supers are not knowledgeable and have no experience, always forgetting to set up the crews for success, expect you to be productive without the proper equipment or material. Wannabe general foreman is two faced and steals hours. Dont forget to leave your integrity at home because you dont need it there. Hide all cut corners and mistakes from upper management so the supers dont look bad. Cheat on every spec possible to save time and money in that moment.  Kgl should be removed from the project

Employer refused to let me work after discovering i had a disability. Even with multiple letters of clearance from doctors and surgeons.
Also failed to lay me off and I couldn’t obtain EI, had to force the issue through human rights commission and OHS, as constructive dismissal.
After 4 months without any income they offered to pay me off if I dropped the complaints and quit.

A decent place to work.  Management provides you with all the administrative controls to allow you to do your job safely and accurately.  Policies and procedures are there for a reason.  In this line of work, you do deal with rain days.  Fortunately,  there are foreman who can provide you work...as long as you are willing to get dirty.  The entire team is very approachable and value family over work. 

Unless you were friends of the girls who were team leads your hours were less than 5 days a week.  Never known any flaggers to get so poor hours other flaggers in city work 6 days x 12 hrs a week but not here at KGL you were lucky to get 8 hrs a day and they often made you do split shifts.

They were disorganized and you could not book time off for medical and would be told it would be denied.

You are just a cog in the wheel, paid to work from the neck down. No self starters or free thinkers allowed.

Don't get hurt either! You will be shuffled out the door, berated and most likely pressured to lie about your injuries in order to keep your job.

The Managers don't know what they do. All seem to be inexperienced. There is no proper planning, scheduling and quality.  No value on the work- life balance even if there are some policies. They are wasting public money. Alberta Infrastructure (AI) is not going to get a quality product from them. They have to have more controls on this company. 
I feel, AI is wasting our tax money.

Terrible management, under staffed crews, lack of required equipment and poor corporate culture with respect to employees. Also they don't pay people the rate promised. IE if promised operator 1 rates before being hired, they will start you at operator 2 rates and only change it if YOU notice and make enough noise about it.
