As a repair mechanic, work was assigned day-to-day. At times, the supervisor would be scrambling to figure out where to send you. Often times there was little to no support from the office and we were left to organize jobs on our own (parts acquisitions, obtaining PO's from other office staff, coordinating and scheduling equipment rentals/deliveries from suppliers and other service providers). Management was often at odds with each other. Field staff are undervalued and considered replaceable. Apprentices are often coerced into performing tasks that they shouldn't be doing with the possibility of getting laid off. As a licensed mechanic, management will threaten to make your life miserable if you don't do as you're told. Supervisors with no industry experience are preferred over those that have worked in the field. This guarantees that those without experience do as they're told without question. Nepotism and favoritism runs rampant within Kone and within the industry. When meeting someone, the question "Who are you related to?" was often the follow up after giving my name and the department I worked for. 

There is great opportunity to learn in the industry. There are plenty of passionate and kind people who are willing to share their knowledge with others that want to learn. If you want to work with a company that will value your skill and ability, and you as a person; look elsewhere.

My day would consist of opening work orders, processing expense reports to be approved by Branch Manager.
Daily entry of technician hours, ensuring all purchase orders, hours, expenses related to a job have been entered, thus allowing closure of job.
Maintaining the "contract base" for Burlington; this consisted of entries of contracts for service to customer's crane equipment, loading contract into system. The "base" was balanced daily/weekly and total information was required prior to the last "month end day" to have budget numbers/amounts entered for final service numbers.

It was interesting to see how cranes were produced/manufactured and learning about the various types of cranes, gantry's, jibs, etc.

A typical day wasn't always typical...you wanted to be sure there was balance between service work but making sure the customer needs were handled, especially when entering of the contracts, getting the information to customer in a timely manner, along with the booklet for their files.

I enjoy dealing with customers, whether it be by phone or in person, even though sometimes there were hiccups to deal with, truly enjoy that aspect of this particular job.

Work would begin with a brief safety discussion between the helper and mechanic about the procedures, safeguards which would be in place that day. Upon which we would mobilise equipment, materials and tools needed to complete each task. At which point we would execute the plan as efficiently and safely as possible. Rail Installation was my favourite part of the day. My least favourite part of the day was if certain materials had been delivered damaged or not at all and we had to order replacement parts we would be in limbo until they arrived. My co-workers were all very passionate about building a well function, safe elevator which I really enjoyed as I enjoy working with professional, committed people who pay attention to every detail.

I really enjoy working at Kone, but unfortunately, I am away from my Family and Friends in another province living alone. 

Kone has a variety of great tools in which to not only track the progress of specific jobs, but at the same time, they can also track the work force to ensure that the operational side of the business is meeting their weekly and monthly objectives. 

Kone is a fair and respectful company with additional resources to help you as an individual grow to be better at your job, along with the potential for upward growth within the organization. 

I would recommend working for Kone to anyone who has either a sales, marketing, or even an operational background.

work/life balance - they are flexible in working from home & working around your appointments/arrangement.Allow work from home from time to time.The rewards get trimmed down more and more every year. Just when you thought they ran out of ways to cheap-out on rewarding employees,

Very stressful to deal with supervisor and other mechanics, I have learned everything by myself. Nothing they teach you. 
Not a supportive management, a typical old school read neck  environment. Mechanics were stabbing each others in the back, dishonest and etc.... I thought this would be a dream career, but I was wrong and will not recommend working for Kone. I just enjoyed working with customers.

They micromanage everything you do , and time cop you

Work environment is good challenges with the company brass is always an issue 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Work for 8 hours installing a  unit made of tin

Not unusual to work 18 hours a day but get paid for eight!  No thanks, no nothing!  Management is weak, morale is low and all the best staff have already  quit, mostly dead wood left. A company going nowhere fast!

Management at this location has no respect or trust for employees. Upper management expected me to micromanage the field staff and track them via safety locator for pay deduction. Completely inappropriate.
