Katimavik

Katimavik was the best 6 months of my life. i learned lots about myself and about Canada. I had no idea what i was going to do after school so i decided to pack up and give this 6 month course a try. I was introduced to many youth my age from all sorts of places like Quebec, Nova Scotia etc. the way it was set up was about 10 kids in each house where everyone had a volunteer job that we would go to everyday. my first job in Vancouver was a teachers assistant at an elementary school, which lasted 3 months. our second place was Calgary where i spent my work hours folding cloths and selling socks to the homeless downtown. the last project we had was in Ottawa. this was when we got together (me and my group) and did a project together to raise awarness about the Ottawa river and its pollution.

I applied to take part in the Katimavik program before I finished high school and before I had graduated, found out that I had been accepted. I spent the fall and early winter becoming increasingly nervous; I had never spent so far away from home, nor lived in a house with so many other people. I had lived in barracks during my summers as a cadet, but those were three month stints, and I was unsure about a six-month long stay. Well, the program turned out to be the best thing I have ever done with my life. I learned more on Katimavik than I had anywhere else, including 14 years of schooling. In essence, I learned to live and work with a variety of different people, some who did not see eye to eye. It was my goal to ensure that these people worked together comfortably, and I believe I succeeded.

 »Worked at an Outreach Center for youth from low income housing as a big brother type mentor. 

 Salvation Army Food Bank and Family Services
 Midland, Ontario
 »Worked directly with the Family Services Coordinator to learn every aspect of how a Salvation Army Food Bank operates. Also, supervised and organized the food distribution for the Christmas Hamper campaign, as well as overall volunteering at every opportunity presented

I volunteered in this program and we learnt new skills and languages and life stuff. One thing I wasn’t to happy about was being forced to learn French, especially as an indigenous person it felt very colonizing. 
 Halfway through the program our project leader switched to someone who was unmotivated and not involved and had bad depression. I think for future groups that they should be better background and mental health checks! 

It was my ideal job: it was different from day to day: data entry in Excel worksheets then in Web Accounting Software (VAM).
Preparing computers and laptops to be sent to projects co-ordinators. Sometimes reparing and/or replace components in desktop computers.
Write Computer Using Policy.
Communicate with commerce and project co-ordinators.

There always seemed to be communication break downs and not a clear idea of the chain of command. Would like to see more diversity within Katimavik and more Indigenous content created by Indigenous people.

it helped me  when I was lost and made me realize how much  I love my country. I  learned many skills and made lasting friendships. it will forever be the best thing I did for myself

Katimavik was such a unique and eye-opening experience. I was constantly learning throughout my 6-month term. I was very fortunate to have worked with such a diverse group of individuals.

Katimavik helped me realize that I can overcome obstacles. It taught me that helping others out is more rewarding than helping myself. I was taught leadership skills as well as team work skills.

Such and amazing program which helped me grow so very much as a person. Improved my french skills and allowed my to explore the many people and places of Canada
