I thoroughly enjoyed my career as a teacher.  Organization, time management, and classroom management were of utmost importance.  The day consisted of working with large and small groups of students, as well as those with learning difficulties.  Often, students carried a good deal of 'baggage' and needed that special TLC.  I learned that to be respected, it was imperative to give respect.  The workplace culture was diverse and collaborative.  The hardest part of the job was ensuring that every student got the best of which I had to offer because with classroom sizes of 30, it was often difficult to touch base with every student every day.  The most enjoyable part of the job was the look of pleasure and satisfaction on the faces of students when they grasped a new skill and really felt as if they had accomplished something important and satisfying.  I found it very difficult to leave my career.  I loved the collaboration, friendship, and camaraderie among the students, the teachers on staff and myself.  I miss that aspect of my career.

- teach JK/SK children, along with special need students in my classroom with the help of Child and Youth Worker
- teach, sing, dance and enjoy building self-esteem and life long learners
- attend professional meetings with colleagues
- supervisor and advise E.A. students
- write various kinds of reports 
- represent the school as the teacher rep. for School  Council
- work and plan co-operatively with my colleagues and various board supervisors
- plan for the following day 
- leave around 5:00 p.m.

I have learned that the most important part of my job as a teacher was to make sure that the kids knew that I cared about them and that they could become whatever they desired in life.  Knowing that you are loved, respected and have potential, no matter what obstacles we face, give not only young children hope, but others as well.

I loved my job and retired only because it wasn't financially advantageous for me to remain working.

Working for KPRDSB is good if you like variety as you can work for a variety of schools, clients, and environments. With that you don't know what you are getting for management (principals) so be ready for casual, power trippers and the good ones, fortunately I worked for some great principals. 
Communication is lacking as there are too many people involved in decision making.
You will spend most of your time putting out fires as there is no time to do preventative skill building with the kids.
You will most likely get hurt due to behaviors and HR will give you a tone of paperwork and make you feel guilty for getting hurt, not supportive.
I left because I felt they didn't support children with needs properly.  The IEP's have the proper wording  but not always put into practice, this is due to lack of staff to implement procedures and they keep cutting back, as well as no PD offered to support staff.
Again, I was fortunate enough to work for great management but my values no longer aligned with KPRDSB.

As a co-op student working under two separate teachers the day was spent working one-on-one with small groups of students in each class who were learning below grade level or had learning disabilities. I also did clerical work like photocopying and laminating during the times the students were out for recess or were in a lesson with their teacher. I learn so much about kids and helping them succeed. The teachers and principal were always so inclusive and tried to make sure that my time there was spent well. The hardest part of the job was either having to say goodbye or the lack of air conditioning during the summer. The pro was everything else, this was one of those jobs that I wish I could do for the rest of my life.

As a casual support staff, literally no support from anyone. Principals are dismissive, asking for assistance is useless as people just take over and ask you to go home. The chain of command is difficult to understand- so many people to contact and people just pass you around. Job security is non existing. Rate of pay is terrible if you're a contract. Schools are so under staffed, they all seem basically in survival mode. Schools are very clicky and if you arent in, you're not even acknowledged. 

Great school board. Paid very well, friendly staff. Needs more full time positions. 

Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board is an overall great school board. The schools are very clean and well maintained. The staff are very friendly and staff are paid appropriate rates. If I had one con it would be that educational assistants and child and youth workers are in dire need due to the behaviours that the school board faces. Due to this, more full time or temporary part time positions should be available for staff.

advancement and permanency can be difficult to attain
work hours and holidays are a definite bonus
management is somewhat out of touch with job details and the realities of the clients' needs making successes more difficult for both staff and clients
if KPR recognized the value and training CYW and support staff offer   this would be a more positive and successful work and learning environment

What is the best part of working at the company?
Very little that was positive.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Unsafe work situations. Security cameras needed throughout the schools.

Not positive around bullying and zero tolerance.

Stressful and unsafe. Teachers are not supported by administrators.

Opportunity to work with many great people.

Understaffed and underpaid as well as moved around to much

Overall I would say not to bad but getting more stressful every year 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very busy and never enough time or staff to get the job done properly

working with students and staff on an ongoing basis.  Learned that this job is not for everyone. Management are superficial....most locations the co-workers are great people.  The wait to get a permanent position is ridiculous - most postings are filled prior to them being posted (management already has person in mind when the posting comes out - so most don't have a fighting chance).  Knowing that at the end of the day you can go home and not take the job with you.
