Kearl Oil Sands Project

I fully believe that it is the people who are making the company either positive, progressive, supportive, and pleasant to work with, or just the opposite.  When I started the work at Kearl Oil Sands working for P2S Driver, which later became Fluor Driver, the company had very few people working on that site.  But as the site became operational the number of employees have been multiplied several times.  During that growing process couple wrong people got promoted to the management of the maintenance.  That after two years of my positive and progressive work experience there, started to go in the opposite direction and got progressively worse in terms of atmosphere and relations even between coworkers.  The couple individuals I have in mind have been already under the microscope of the upper management but they manage to last so far.  It is just to bad that couple of bosses can make the whole organization to change so quickly and very good place to work for went to became not worth the stress and aggravations.

A day start as early as 5:00 am with transportation to site with a 12hour work schedule.
I have learned a great things such as team work, time management and living with other people from various background.
My co-worker are fun to work with and learn from each other as well.
The hardest part of my job is working in adverse (harsh) weather condition as it could be cold upto -55 at times.
The most enjoyable part of my job is ability to patrol the entire site and most importantly during the summer contact with numerous wildlife animals.

Work starts with tool box meeting which consist mainly on safety, site updates,new policies and directives if there are any, and work orders that has to be accomplished for the day. You learn something new on your job from time to time and this makes it a bit challenging. While I can work as individual, I also enjoy working in a team setting. The hard part on my job is working outside because you are expose to different elements.

we started work with praying and do some workout. every morning our supervisor discuss about the job and give us instruction what to do. safety was a big part of company policy. we had to follow the safety rules all the time. management was incredible. they help us everyway they can. the hardest part of the job was not allowed to work fast. we had to take our time to finish the job.it was good for all us.at the end of the day we had to take bus to the camp. I enjoyed the bus ride, looking natures out of the window.

Waking up early and going to bed early. In the Security field, one must always be
punctual and reliable, aware and observant.  Access Control was
the main focus while working at Kearl amongst many other duties.
I totally enjoyed working with the clients on site they made life at  Kearl worthwhile.
Then of course there's patrolling only certain areas on site.

Communication within the office is dysfunctional. The Union local 955 works for the company not the membership. Seniority means nothing within the company or Union. Dispatchers are brutal with schedules on a day to day basis, nickle and dime ya for minutes worked, always having to go in and have your schedule revized.

Operated light equipment & heavy equipment when needed. I was a field HSE Coordinator at the Crucher & Conveyor duties included daily inspections of Surge Bin, S.P.P. Building , Crusher . Daily Tool Boxs and Weekly safety meetings were coordinated.
In the case of an Incident/Accident or Property Damage thorough investigations were performed and documented then reported to CMT and Prime Contractor.

Worked as a contractor providing supervision and coordination and site representative roles and working on both night and day shifts.

 Left to carry out my functions\duties for most part. Not always informed of staff changes and leadership.

Opening email and tending to email that needed to be taken care of immediately.
Checking telephone voicemail and answering any queries.
Processing documentation that needed to be taken care immediately.
Giving support to my coworkers.
Teambuilding which helped to bring team members together in a cohesive unit.
The people I worked with.

It was a great place to work. Coming from construction, all the equipment installed are familiar to me. Being now in maintenance helped me to understand more of the process. Outages, Shutdowns are frequent to keep the equipment in good condition. My planning experience and supervisory experience made me lead the team safely in their work execution.
The inter-relation with the client was excellent.
