My typical day at work, is to watch the cash, cook a variety types of food, and serve to the customer and patients. I work volunteer, at KGH and it is a great place to be, meeting new people and talking to different types of people, and serving them with a meal that they enjoy. Myself I love meeting new people, listening to their stories and sharing my own, and people that come in there, some are there because of some sort of tragedy and others for a birth of a  son or daughter. I learned to be more patient here, and see that some people have a different way of appreciating or saying thanks than to simple say it. And management is great here, never a time where there wasn't a question that my supervisor couldn't answer. Never a time where there was difficulty. They do the greatest job ever, and more over they are so understanding to any situation that comes forth. My co-workers are amazing as well, we work together, and there's no arguments, we all decide together on what to do or who does which job. We help each other out when we're stuck. The hardest part of the job is when the customer buys something, but their meal gets disturbed because of some reason and they have to rush upstairs, watching that or knowing something negative may have happened is the hardest part really. But the most enjoyable part of my job is watching them happily enjoy their meal, watching them enjoy what we have done ourselves. And that is what motivates us to keep doing what we do, which is serving them. In the end, we aren't paid for this, we do it because we love to. And also the community itself, are such amazing people, so warm and kind. Anyone would do it for them.

A typical day at work would be attaining my goals for the day, good time management, and organization. I learned how to work faster in a fast paced environment. My co-workers were great! We worked as a team & shared the workload. The hardest part of the job was when there were a lot of things going on with a couple of patients and they happened all at the same time. There was one instance where a patient just had a blood transfusion & the other one just came from peritoneal dialysis & his blood sugar was @ 2.8. I spent most of my time doing vital signs for both every 15 minutes for the first hour and doing accu-chek to the other patient. I gave him some apple juice & glucose tabs at that moment & checked his blood sugar every 10 minutes until it went up to 4 while checkin on the other patient for any signs of allergic reaction to the transfusion. In between those times, I still had to check my other patients. It was a busy day but I managed. The most enjoyable part of the job was giving the best possible patient care using the best of my knowledge & abilities.

My typical day volunteering at KGH has been anything but unpleasant. There are always warm smiles as you enter the building, and when I'm serving coffee or snacks, the customers and workers are so sweet and friendly. I have learned so much about just volunteering there, from people telling stories about their lives, getting to know the regular customers, and one significant thing that I definitely learned from working there was the adapting. There are certain situations where you can't change anything except be flexible. The management has been great, and very orderly. The culture at the workplace is amazing! I get to work with different people most of the time and it's a great way to open up new friendships and connections. The hardest part of the job for me is closing time. At closing time, we go down to the most detail, because the shop won't be opening until the next day or until the weekend is over. The most enjoyable part of the job is everything else! KGH is a fun place to be able to volunteer/work.

Everyday was something new, some days were filled with trauma, others were spent doing maintenance and QC. I learnt laboratory work but also how to multi-task, work as a team and work alone, and my critical thinking has improved so much. The management was hard working, but didn't always seem to have the employees best interests in mind. The workplace culture was great. specifically in the transfusion, we always worked together as a team and helped each other out when needed. The most enjoyable part of my job was working through traumas because you always have to be working, but still efficiently. Also working on antibody investigations. I like that they are similar to puzzles.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Then only good thing is a reasonable pay with overtime , that’s it…other than that nothing good. Bosses that have favouritism going on and only treat the ones they can control with a little respect. The union will do nothing to support you, trust me…glad I am gone and and to never return.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working with people who don’t do their job and you end up having to do it for the lazy useless employees, and there are a lot of them.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Horrible, if you don’t do a lot of brown nosing you aren’t respected.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Not very enjoyable, not too many happy employees and it shows

This is a great place to work compared to long-term care placements, in my opinion. I get to meet lots of new people and build relationships with co-workers.

The most satisfying part of the job is seeing a patient make it back home and the gratitude some patients express.

Typically I sign into work, grab a pager and head to my area of work. I then go over my patient list for the day and prioritize which patients to see. I also assist my overseeing therapist with any patients that may be difficult for just one person. I document who i have seen and what they did as i go along and report anything of note to the therapist.

Care Aides get treated like trash. Youre a mule who has to take care of the bottom of the barrel duties, that nobody else wants to do. Youre disrespected and expected to run your skin off, while the LPN's and Rn's  play on their phones and ignore the fact that they are supposed to help with the simple and unpleasant tasks too. You must have thick skin to work here. Everyone is burned out, battling mental health issues and terrible to patients.

Whether it be a crazily busy shift, there are always good mornings and goodnights.  There is an essence of coworkers supporting coworkers which makes the tough shifts go by a little smoother and easier. Having the opportunity to make a difference in patient's (and their family's) lives is a tremendously wonderful feeling.  Even when the situtaion is sad or unfortunate, just being able to do what I can is in itself evidently rewarding when my patient asks if it is ok to hug me.

I’ve worked here for 20 years and I find the team work keeps me coming back! I love that people from all over the world come to work here! Sometimes it can be too much emotionally and physically , but I’ve come to enjoy working with my staff and some have even become great friends that I see outside of the workplace. Definitely a lot of bonding experiences to be had here!

A typical day at work is very busy and physical. I learn to work hard but remember to pace myself so I don't get hurt . Listen to managements requests. Listen and understand co-workers. The hardest part of my job is stopping to take my breaks cause I am on a good roll but, our breaks are there for a reason. The most enjoyable part of my job is the time goes by fast and I get a good work out.
