Kettleby Valley Camp

A typical day of work at KVC is different depending on your area of employment. As a residential activity staff it included waking up the campers in my cabin to ensure we were at breakfast on time, getting the campers ready for their day following breakfast, then ensuring they got to the meeting place to be supervised in order to set up my own activity. Once my activity was set up campers began to flood in and a day filled with fun began. Working with other staff was mostly very enjoyable, most people are there because they want to be and enjoy working and those who may have been apprehensive to the summer camp "vibe" tend to level out and enjoy it by the 4th week there. The hardest part of the job would have been the long hours. It is full days of energy requiring tasks at least 5 days a week. As a residential staff the days extend into nights and you are pretty much expected to be energetic and chipper from 7:30 am until the campers are ready for bed. That being said, I wouldn't say the long hours deterred me from my liking of the camp. The friendships built with not only the other staff but also the connections made with campers made the long hours worth it. I now have life long friends and memories. The summer camp experience allows for individual growth, along with life skills that will help with many aspects of future endeavors.

Though working with children is stressful and tiring, Kettleby Valley Camp is a wonderful place to work due to the upbeat, spirit-driven culture behind it. The camp hosts Highland Games each month, a camp-wide spirit event where the campers are given colours and groups with which they must work together to win the Highland Games. This, along with evening programs and final campfire, create a wonderful, playful environment for both campers and staff.

My first year working here was great and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience working as an overnight staff. Senoir staff on the day camp side were very gossipy. In my second year I worked day cam and thier lack of professionalism cause many issue. Senior staff often treated private information shared with them by those reporting to them as gossip. This meant personal issues brought up to them would spread around camp , this included health issues, family problems, etc.

Great place to work if you love kids and the outdoors - everyone is super friendly and all the senior staff are kind and very approachable. Lots of the kids there are lovely and fun to be around, but sometimes you will meet kids who just refuse to listen to you and will cause some chaos. Fortunately, there are a bunch of staff who will be more than willing to help out so you'll never be fending for yourself

An amazing camp to work at, the area is beautiful in Kettleby. Many jobs available such as day counselor or overnight, activity staff etc. Unfortunately this job was $3/h when I worked there, minimum wage for students was $10.50 at the time. If you just want to have fun and not care about money this is a good place for that.

Woke up at 7am every morning, immediately working. Only breaks from 10-12 daily and a night off every other week and an hour off the opposite weeks. Not to talk to staff during work times. Lunch breaks involve balancing feeding yourself and working with children, never enough food to keep an adult alert and healthy until the next meal.

Working at KVC helped me - and I assume many others - to get the first experiences needed to build a resumé. I highly recommend doing this job in early high school, as the pay isn't good enough to sustain any university or college plans.

As someone going to school to become a teacher, this job taught me so much about behaviour management, and the importance of building relationships with kids. I loved being able to work outside all day and management and staff are all so supportive and helpful when anything goes wrong. 

This camp is great to work at however the pay as a lifeguard/swim instructor and a residential counsellor was low and unfair. There was lots of gossip being passed around about other counsellors which caused rifts in the staff team.

A great job for current student's looking for a fun, positive work environment. Great for people that enjoy working outdoors with children. The senior staff are all very supportive and willing to work with staff to ensure a positive work experience.
