As an apprentice, i expected a certain amount of on-the-job training, and while this was sometimes true at Kimco, most of the time as an HVAC service tech i found myself alone, flipping filters, on a searing hot or freezing cold roof checking fan belts, pulleys and capacitors, choking on dust. During almost 2 years of time at Kimco i had almost no time being trained in actual refrigeration, although the other HVAC techs were pretty good about giving advice when asked. Once in a while I was randomly assigned to an install, and was expected to provide expensive tools I only used once in a blue moon. Of course I trundled along, doing my level best to wrap my brain around the vast scope of equipment: circuit diagrams, rooftop units, evaporative coolers, humidifiers, de humidifiers, furnaces, heat pumps, geo loops, hydronics, heat recovery ventilators, air handlers, fan coils, hot water tanks, heat exchangers, all types of pumps, single and three phase motors, valves, boilers, air compressors, air bleed valves, make up air units, exhaust fans, water treatment systems, defrost loops, mini-splits, unit heaters, ice machines, pool heaters, window shakers, you name it. I bought as many tools as I could, I attended school and was at the top of my class, studying hard while on reduced pay, under financial stress all the time while in school. I diligently filed all my Kimco paperwork with utmost detail and on time. I busted my butt to complete workloads in a timely manner, subjecting my body to all the dangers you can imagine: flammable gases, pressurized systems, hot brazing work, working at heights, working with toxic chemicals, high voltage electricity, sketchy roof access, moving parts, literally 100 ways to maim or kill yourself. All this i did with a mostly cheerful attitude, with zero negative feedback from management, until the day i was unceremoniously kicked to the curb without notice, with a half-completed apprenticeship and a family to feed. The explanation was "it's just business". While Kimco will trade on the image of being a family-first, merit-driven environment, in truth this is a romantic notion of a bygone era in the trades when mom and pop companies actually committed to their apprentices and were truly invested in their education. After this experience, I can see why there is a lack of people in the trades. It's an uphill, expensive, dangerous slog, and when it comes down to it, employers like Kimco expect all the loyalty in the world until it's time to reciprocate, then it's "just business". 

I had a great experience at KIMCO in terms of above-average pay, acceptable benefits, and no issues with taking time off. However, I noticed that the management team's attitude could change drastically if they were indifferent towards someone. What started as friendly and supportive management sometimes turned into micro-managing, frequent scolding, and difficulties getting time off.

Additionally, most of the management team being partners made interactions with HR quite uncomfortable. At the beginning of my time there, I was promised a lot, and it was amazing, but after their building renovations, management seemed to prioritize greed over caring for their team. This resulted in difficulties in productivity, with upper levels of management frequently disagreeing and pushing all staff in different directions.

Despite these challenges, if you have thick skin and are looking for a place to grow for a year or two, KIMCO might be suitable for you. They have a number of long-standing employees, which indicates some stability and functionality in the workplace. You just need to be the right culture fit, and able to shrug off things quickly. 

I was excited to work at this company as I perceived the organization to be professional and well executed. 

However, the first job I was given ended up being a major let down as it was not quoted correctly or researched well which ended up in the customer getting an end product that didn’t work as intended. KIMCO refused to lose money on the job which is fair but rather then explain to the customer that the must change - corners were cut. 

“It’s a volunteer firehall - they won’t be using the equipment often” was the response from management. 

The program that is utilized for work orders is not used as intended and results in the office not receiving the information from the techs correctly. Extremely frustrating.  

As well - the company seems to use their religious background as a shield for their shotty business practices. 

Has the military type mentality - “if you are right and we are all wrong - you’re wrong”. 

Fortunately the industry has changed in the valley. KIMCO used to be the place to work at but it is not that anymore as competition for experienced tradespeople is fierce. 

Working at Kimco Controls as a controls technician was an incredible experience. One of the standout aspects was the schedule – working 4x10-hour days gave me an excellent work-life balance, allowing for long weekends and more time to recharge and have fun in the valley. The environment was always positive, fostering collaboration and a sense of camaraderie among the team.
The company also offered great benefits, which added an extra layer of security and appreciation. Kimco truly valued its employees and provided opportunities for growth and development within the trade. If you’re someone who takes pride in your work and enjoys being part of a supportive and professional team, Kimco Controls is a fantastic place to build a fulfilling career.

I enjoy going to work everyday. The employees are very helpful and really want to get involved with Holidays, employees Birthdays and keeping moral up beat. Management are very aproachable and are always around for day to day operations and really care about employees well being and very understanding to situations that arise.





I loved this job it was one i looked forward to everyday i got up. I had a great time working on my own and  with other employees.
management is to critical of there employees, pushing out good hard working people. HR didn't involve them self unless they let you go, this is a big problem.

The owners are awesome, really easy to talk to.  This is a place where you are valued as a person, not as a number.  Employees are supportive and know their stuff.  Switched careers from a Field Supervisor in Vancouver to an office role, best leap of faith I have taken.  Will never look back!

Kimco has given me the tools and support to help me succeed in the trade.
They are very knowledgeable and are willing to take the time to help improve their employees.
That sense of patience shows that they are investing in my future as much as I am.


Crew is good, but the management is predatory. They ask you to work overtime for regular pay, hold back raises unless you promise not to discuss with coworkers, and they try to promote you without compensating new responsibilities. 

Lotsa of empty promises and gaslighting over all. I feel this company could pay their employees a better living wage given their expectations and how much they charge their customers.
