Typical day: managing multidisciplinary team, client and team calls, calculations and analyses, project control.

Management (speaking for the mining group only): Fair and transparent compensation scheme, work flexibility for young parents.

Workplace culture: always striving for improvement, producing quality work, attention to health and safety; recent years a lot more emphasis on mental health.

Hardest part of job: managing work stress related to tight deadline, lack of staff.

Most enjoyable part of job: the job satisfaction that comes with making positive contribution (reducing risk) in the mining industry. Working with competent co-workers. 

Terrible culture that encouraged an “us and them” dynamic between the engineers and all other employees. For eg engineers who obtained the professional designation were loudly applauded and given a $10k pay rise. Environmental scientists who obtained the equivalent were ignored. One senior engineer said out loud that engineering was akin to brain surgery, while environmental and or social science was like kindergarten teaching.

They are more focused on their bottom line than any employees happiness. Don't value working from home in the calgary office, and actually don't allow it. Lots of turnover and very little senior management continuity as everybody has moved offices or has been laid off in the last two years in the environmental and groundwater groups. I would avoid working here as I value my free time and want to have multiple different projects instead of always working on the same type of work for the mining industry.

In my opinion the two ingredients that make attractive Klohn Crippen Berger are the culture and the history. First, the atmosphere for working in one direction is excellent. I've found always a helping hand and positive attitude to deal with daily tasks. On the other hand, the history makes Klohn Crippen Berger a place where knowledge can be developed and share in a friendly environment of specialists in Geotechnical Engineering related to Tailings Management facilities. I feel lucky to be part of the KCB Team. 

Strong management/leadership who actively listen and look out for interests  and growth opportunities for their employees. Wide range of projects with opportunity to travel or work in your local area. Comprehensive on boarding and career development planning. Very few people working a "grind" most people working there are because they like working there.

Very busy demanding role but very redundant day to day. Managment always stated that the role would change in different ways but never did.
Excellent people to work with and was very hard to make the decision to leave to find a role that will be satisfying for me.

Good company, decent benefits packages. But sometimes random overtime is expected. Would love to see more coworkers getting together and actually enjoying work and each other’s company rather than just drown in piles of projects.

This is a medium size company that is involved in a variety of projects meaning that there are many options to get your feet wet. The company however lacks leadership and the atmosphere within the office is very dry. People mostly just focus on their own work and do not collaborate or communicate with each other.

KCB works hard to incorporate all their employees into the culture of the company and has a few good managers. The hardest part of the job is fighting to find work.

The benefits are decent and they give lost of bonuses that you will not find anywhere else (not financial but useful things like a concierge service)

Very patient and helpful which was appreciated as a new addition to the team. Very clean, productive and welcoming work environment. Was impressed with the company management and friendly co-workers.
