LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO

I am a peoples person. I have worked in a community office from the last eight years.

In my role as an Executive Assistant with the Member of Provincial Parliament, I have developed the following skills.

I have developed my strong administrative skills in my role by managing the day-to-day executive and administrative operations. This includes ensuring that the operational and administrative policies, procedures and standards are consistently applied to support the achievement of the M.P.P's objectives.

I have further developed strong organizational skills as well as learned how to prioritize workflow when faced with various conflicting priorities. In situations where there are conflicting priorities, I will take a proactive approach to solving the problem, by drawing on my knowledge of the Ministry’s priorities, goals and key initiatives. I am able to quickly identify the priorities appropriately and action them accordingly.

I have organized and maintained confidential personnel files. This also included the safekeeping and archiving of the files based on the M.P.P’s retention schedule. When confidential files needed to be transferred for off-site storage, I consulted with the Ministry Freedom of Information and Privacy Act coordinator to ensure that the necessary protocols were followed to ensure the proper recording, handling and transfer of confidential documents.

I support the communication and distribution of new corporate initiatives. As the main point of contact for new initiatives, I respond to queries from Ministry staff (including Regional Directors and front line Managers) promptly and courteously.

There are many internal problems right now with the management which is tribal and toxic. There is no room to move up. The pay is not done properly resulting in the employees being cheated on the payroll. The management is very closed and will not allow for anything other than what they can deal with which is not much because most of them were handed their jobs. The environment in Systems Development Information Services branch is very bad and has a bullying manager who is abusive towards staff. He comes across as very nice but behind people's back there is a lot of discrediting for the work that is done and a lot of blaming and shaming. People don't get the credit for work done because the management steals the credit for it. As a result, a lot of people are forced to quit, get fired or are forced to retire early. 

This is the worst place to work. Closed minded. Toxic.

The place is not hostile, but dysfunctional. There is close to no communication about essential parts of my job. There is tons of downtime.

Essential information is not communicated. Schedules change at the last minute without warning. Nothing to do more than 50% of the time. Managers have all the answers but are hidden behind doors. Front staff is left to deal with the public with no information to provide. My most common answer is "I don't know". Suggestions on improvement are ignored.

Turnover is massive. Everyone but management has cycled twice in a little over a year. Same thing at HR, so there is nobody to talk to there at the moment.

The positives are there is no stress and you can be sick as much as you want. Benefits are good too. Pay is lower than market.

As manager for a constituency office that represented a high population of residents on social assistance benefits, was very gratifying. The office dealt with most provincial government services, such as health cards, birth, death and marriage certificates, Ontario Disability, Ontario Works, Family Responsibility Office, as well as other general information and guidance.  As a result, my staff and I were constantly attending to constituent issues, whether by phone, e-mail or personal visits.  Our dealings with the constituents were a direct reflection on the member of parliament that we represented and the reputation of the Party that the member represented.  Therefore, it was imperative that we provided the best service with patience and understanding.

No pay scale as you get lowest salary regardless of your experience. No design or architecture department.  No management, 0 communication or assistance to do your job. Unfriendly office environment with no team spirit. No advanced technology. Antiquated paper system for drawings. Unrealistic timelines and job is mostly facility upgrades to building systems like elevators and washrooms and life safety. Outside contractors and project managers control projects. No design or creativity for any employee.

The salary is competitive and benefits are above average, however opportunities for growth and advancement are poor, at least in the IT department.

The job could be interesting and challenging when projects were under way and there were occasional opportunities to take courses or go to conventions on the company dime.


Fantastic culture to work in with collaborative colleagues to work with, ultimately making it a very pleasant place to work in. Great Manager support was there to expand your wings a little bit and try new things which was vital for my time there to learn and grow.

Pre-pandemic, the office is one of the more interesting and beautiful to work at however during covid have been WFH.  All in all thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

While my boss was okay, politicians can be crazy or bullies. Lots of time-violations, unpaid labour expected. Your job will be gone if your boss loses an election.

If you have a social life while working this job, I'll be impressed. 

On the plus side, you meet some cool people and the networking opportunities are great. Definitely don't try and be older in this field though, it takes a lot of energy. 

I was an Executive Assistant for an MPP. LAO is kind of like Hogwarts. Each political party sticks to their group. Your culture depends on your MPP and close colleagues/team. 

Important work because it affects the province, networking events are cool, but long hours and you can get consumed by political work that is in the public sphere. 

Meaningful, but difficult to find balance and calm since politics runs on a media cycle and the issue of the day. 

This place had to have the worst management I have ever seen in my 25 year career. Avoid working here at all cost as manager will do everything to degrade your work. I never thought a government organization could be so bad. My manager would actually be heckling me during multi-group presentations. Truly horrible.
