With my experience the dispatcher won't answer or call you back, or answer when you call. 

I have been told many stories from guys in the union for almost 20 years about how he was there to pay his dues and he was behind someone asking for the dispatcher, the secretary said he wasn't in meanwhile he knew what the dispatcher drove and his car was in fact there, she flat out lied. 

This is the guy that your livelihood is based on, and he's too lazy or inconsiderate to speak with you.

If you don't pay your dues you break some sort of contract and can be kicked out, even if they aren't giving you work to make money to pay your dues, it's a joke.

You have benefits as long as you are working, If you don't have enough paid into them you have to pay an additional 50.00 on top of the 30.00 union dues to stay in their union.

You can go for 6 months and not get any work from them but they still want their money, even when you do get work a lot of it is complete garbage work and the other trades don't respect the labor union so they truly and honestly treat you like some idiot who's skills only amount to labor.

A few people I have worked with said they relocated and the Liuna in Ottawa was a complete joke compared to the one they came from.

Myself and 2 other people I have met since I joined have been out of work for over 6 months.

A few others I know are leaving and going back to residential construction or looking for other jobs where at least they can have full time work.

Is this worth paying 800.00 to join and pay 30.00 a month regardless if they are giving you work or not? I don't think so.

LIUNA is probably the best thing that has ever happened to me. Being a pat of this union in particular has allowed  me to access courses I would not have been able to take, has taught me the meaning of hard work ethic, and has challenged me on a daily basis.

It is a fast paced work environment and having been with LIUNA for over 6 years, it has given me the opportunity to delve into all sorts of trades work. I have been on every type of crew to which I have labored hard for and have gained many different skills in doing so.  

I can use a variety of different types of power tools, learned how to communicate accurately with fellow employees, given me the opportunity to spread my wings and try new things, as well as taught me a lot about safety protocol, etc.

I would say that working for LIUNA has made me into the man I am today. I am hard worker, have a strong back, and am able to tackle many different duties at one time all the while still maintaining a healthy and safe work environment for myself and team.

If you want to work in a horrible work culture encouraged by the top guys (mangment + so called instructors), and very I mean very physically demanding job constantly beating your body to the limit, very unsafe work could easily someone got hurt(slave labour) and all that for free for the first 8-12 weeks then work in Linua local1059 otherwise don’t work there I am being honest guys. So sad a union is doing that. 2019 unions are there for the money guys unions shouldn’t   exist in 2019 in my opinion there are a lot of resource( Human Resources hotlines etc..) that you can use if something very bad is going on in your workplace. modern union are there for there buckets in the expense of their clients. Filthy filthy people.

Organization operates on 24/7 schedule , the majority of employees and management are on call including holidays and vacations.
Unstable Executive management due to electoral nature of the EBoard appointments.
Overall great people working hard to serve over 50k members in Ontario.
The most rewarding and enjoyable part of this job, is to see the results of the Information Technology benefiting advancement of the organization and people working for it at it best. 
Fairly large number of non-technology savvy users that are very appreciative to have a knowledgeable IT team to assist them whenever it is needed.

 Love the in house training that comes with our membership! I cant forget about the Wellness Center! I suffered from elbow and back pain for a brief period and the physio and message fixed me rite up. I have always been terrified of the dentist until receiving painless treatment from the dental center. Kind and respectful from all the  everyone in every section on or off site. I recommend becoming a member!

Everyday was different so there was no typical day at work. Learnt a lot in the accounting aspect of things.  I enjoyed my position I was always busy doing something. The hardest part was working on the health and welfare eligibility bank.  Some workers were great to work with but other were a little difficult to approach.

I took the liuna pre apprenticeship training program. They had us digging holes all day just to fill it in again. Then another day they had us carrying scaffolding from one side of the building to the other then back again, all day! I understand these tasks were fitness tests for when you get on the job but it was completely pointless work in the middle of the summer heat. Wasted my summer doing this. It also cost $700 to take the pre apprenticeship course which is money you don't get back.

I thoroughly enjoyed the type of work at this organization. However, the management system was not well developed with many employees being relatives of political leaders within the organization. Therefore, advancement was difficult especially becuase I was not related to anyone.

Typical work says are 10 hour days 5 days a week. Weekends are usually off. Not much room to advance but wage and benafits are great. The CEO will not help you as a union should. He is a company man not a union man. Overall I'd say a great place to make a quick bunch but not a good place to try and start a career
