I was hired as an experienced utility locator, but there was no consistent direction in how work was expected to be completed. Instructions changed frequently from day to day, making it difficult to build an efficient workflow or maintain consistency in the field.

Production expectations did not reflect real-world conditions. Time is regularly lost dealing with access issues, homeowners, dogs, and complex utility layouts, but these factors did not appear to be considered when evaluating performance.

I regularly worked long days in the 9 to 11 hour range to keep up with workload demands. hour range did not always appear to be reflected consistently As management would change it on the back end to only 8 hours.   Despite this, I was let go during probation without any meaningful feedback or opportunity to improve. There was no discussion around performance or what could be done differently.

During the hiring process, expectations around workload, hours, and overall stability were presented very positively. However, in practice, the amount of available work appeared inconsistent, and multiple employees were let go within a short period. This created a lack of confidence in long-term stability.

There were also discrepancies between expectations and reality regarding equipment and compensation structure. For example, it took several weeks to be assigned a company vehicle, and benefit costs were higher than expected, with employees contributing significantly out of pocket.

Overall, the experience felt misaligned with what was communicated during hiring, particularly regarding workload consistency and long-term opportunity.

A typical day at work is a paid drive to site in the morning, and depending on the type of surveying, either commute out of town or within city limits.  work 6-10 hours daily surveying with an assistant.  Complete all Paperwork (a lot of it).  Commute back to office or home.
I have learned a great deal from this job.  the main thing I have learned is patience.
Management is acceptable.  Good natured people, but can sometimes let that get in the way of their job.  Communication breakdowns have affected the job many times.
Fellow field staff are all great, easy to get along with and hard working.
Toughest part of the job is the uncertainty of hours and if you will have to work weekends.  there is very short notice of work, sometimes not coming until you have left the house to drive to the office.
The most enjoyable part of the job is working outdoors in small groups.  Also, office planned get togethers are a plus.


A typical day at work involves site visits, measuring land, coordinating with engineers, and preparing survey reports. I use tools like GPS and GIS software to ensure accuracy.  

What I’ve learned is how to manage fieldwork efficiently, interpret technical data, and communicate findings clearly to stakeholders.  

Management is supportive but could improve by providing more advanced training and streamlining approval processes.  

Workplace culture is collaborative, with teamwork being essential. However, deadlines can sometimes create pressure.  

The hardest part is working in harsh weather conditions or resolving discrepancies in old land records.  

The most enjoyable part is seeing a project progress from initial survey to completion, knowing my work contributed to its success.  



Worked for this company a couple of times, and had no job security either time. As soon as the work dried up I was laid off the next day. Inept management, unrealistic work contracts, and no employee loyalty make this company unappealing. It was great when Fort Mac was booming but has since become cut throat. Don’t come here from out of town and expect to work beyond your 2-3 month contract. The people are nice enough but everyone’s out for themselves. 1/5.

good place to work if one has chosen the Geomatics profession. The office was helpful, co-workers were supportive. The only issue was at times, the schedule would be posted very late.  Otherwise a good place to work and build a career.

My experience has been awesome with LN

The owner called me after my first day randomly to see how things were. Asked how we could improve things and if I had any challenges the first day.  Then the owner checked in again 2 weeks after starting to ask the same things.  Everyone works together and the culture has been great

Terrible drawing  program, Terrible facilitator.  Terrible management. Terrible hours. Expect everything, give nothing  . Too many expectations, little training 

I have been with LN for 8 of the last 10 years. I left for 2 years and have been back for almost 6 years now. There is long term security for those who want to make this place their home.

I worked for them briefly until the industry took a dive 2 years ago and was laid off. They just didn't have enough work. The staff were good as was management.

The president of the company is a really easy going, fun, fair guy. Been with the company for a year now. Their pay is fair and I enjoyed meeting other friendly workers in the field. Everyone is very knowledgable and willing to help you out.
