The office is separated between 2 floors. The upper floor has separate offices and the lower floor has no offices and just cubicles. 

Work days are quiet but very busy. Executives are proud to be operating with a "skeleton crew" but are missing potential for the growth that could happen if staff had time to make improvements, start projects, and not have to rush through their task lists and risk missing important details. Projects and large tasks are continually pushed further ahead since there is not enough manpower to handle the current workload. 

Many processes are outdated and should be modernized to keep up with changing times and increased workloads. 

Occasional free lunches and team building activities are a plus but the office maintains a stiff corporate vibe. 

Overall compensation is lower than market and benefits are not top tier. Executives require staff to be in office, not remote or hybrid. No flexibility with that. 


You never know if your working the next day.. 
You wait for a call or group text to see if your working. 
If you don't brown nose or kiss a** you dont get as much work as the ones that do..
Some out of town town drivers live in their trucks for weeks and months at a time.. they get more work than the local drivers. Company policy i guess. 
LaPrairie keeps cutting the wages by converting everything to tonne/km .. no accounting for truck line ups.  Slow loader operators . Road construction and weather conditions..  
Still alot of pot heads smoking on the job..drinking on the job.. 
It was a job to tie me over until a real one came about.
The money was good until they hired too many drivers..  not enough work for the amout of drivers to keep everyone working steady.
No job seniority here..
And i see they are still hiring more drivers to sit and wait for work.. 
In all it was ok.. most of the drivers are good..
Pay check never bounced . Fuel cards always worked.. repairs were done when needed..

What is the best part of working at the company?
Overall, LaPrairie Group (Calgary Office) is a reasonable company to work for. Nothing overly positive or negative to say.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The companies within the group are often fractured in their approach to solving problems. The executive team is also extremely secretive and don't share business plans, which can leave managers and staff scrambling and in the dark.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
In the Calgary office, work culture is pretty dull. Everyone does their jobs in their offices without much controversy. The company generally doesn't do much for social activities (1-2 per year).

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Helping to solve business problems, working with other managers, trying to figure out what one particular executive has decreed that day for their specific company.

The LaPrairies are wonderful people, however the management they have in place often are not.  They put their trust in the wrong people.  There is a culture of being polite, but lacking any real character behind it.  Very closed loop of information, and regular lies even when there seems to be no advantage to it sours the relationship and trust between employees and management.  Management is completely disorganized, and while they are effective responders, they would have to be so far less often if they had a hint of inclination to be proactive.

Additionally, this disorganization and knee jerk responses has led to their fleet being in disrepair, and the get it done now mentality puts workers in situations where they are ill equipped to perform the work safely.  Also you expected to be available to work 24/7.

They do however provide opportunity for workers to learn, and do not fire or lay people off for their convenience.

Getting ready for Inspection days.
Even though you have done your best to follow all the regulations 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very good and all employees are welcoming. Your part of the family 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Safety meeting first thing in the morning. Gathering your equipment gathered. Drive to site with your work partner for the day. Do what's required for the day. Drive back to shop after refueling and sign off

Very poor management skills! If you aren't ready to be shady you won't keep your job. If your honest & hard working they s**t all over you. Workplace is more like working with kids.....very two faced, workplace harassment in abundance, no safety considerations, won't pay to fix equipment properly & if something does happen they find a way to blame it on the operator (paperwork disappears for equipment).
Lots of drugs & alcohol among not only operators but management also. Would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. There is a reason there is a high turnover of staff!!!!!

The atmosphere is relaxed and management leaves you to your own devices. This is not necessarily a good thing when you realize that this is because of the lack of experience and competencies of the management team. The company is dealing with many major process issues after decades of using bandaid fixes and sweeping problems under the rug. 

A typical day at work would be a worry if the equipment I was using would keep running and not injure someone.

I learned my way around a truck, because I was constantly trying to repair them. 

Management poor. more interested in the budget than the safety of staff or the public

The guys I worked with were mostly good guys. but they didn't seem to care either, maybe they just gave up.

The hardest part was keeping the trucks on the road, Hoping the DOT didn't stop you.

Making it back to the shop at the end of the day was a relief.

The guys in the shop where great to work with, supervisor helped as much as he could. Pay was decent for each level of schooling. Decent benefits. Management never let the apprentices actually get training on trucks only trailers.

Toxic work environment that stemmed from the top down! You had to constantly look for discrepancies in your pay due to certain dispatchers who skimmed hours off your trip reports! I would submit my reports at the end of my shift with verifiable times only to get a call from internal office staff asking why I submitted certain hours that had been crossed out & reduced
