Highly  rewarding experience that significantly developed both my professional and interpersonal skills. In this role, I was responsible for coordinating the logistics of on-campus conferences and events and ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience for all attendees.
One of the highlights of the job was the opportunity to take initiative and lead various aspects of event planning — from room bookings and registration coordination to working directly with faculty, vendors, and guest speakers. I learned how to problem-solve under pressure, stay organized with competing deadlines, and adapt quickly to last-minute changes all while maintaining a strong sense of customer service.
The collaborative environment at Lakehead made the experience even more valuable. I worked alongside a dedicated and supportive team, and our collective effort helped create events that ran smoothly and left a strong impression on visitors. The fast-paced nature of the role taught me how to multitask efficiently and communicate clearly, both of which are skills I continue to use in my career.
Overall, my time as a Senior Conference Assistant not only deepened my confidence and leadership abilities, but also strengthened my passion for creating meaningful experiences through event planning and coordination. It was an excellent role that gave me both responsibility and room to grow.

Great place to work, the day to day expectations become easy and routine very quickly, you can choose when you come in as long as it is within usual University hours which is nice. If you already work or study on campus it is a great job to make a bit of extra cash, there is not a lot of hours available for this to be your main job though. The supervisor you work under is very responsive and is very easy to work with, the other lab technicians you run into throughout the week are very friendly and lovely to work with. You do work under a confusing hierarchical system and you will likely never meet anyone except your supervisor or the veterinarian you work under but you will occasionally interact with higher ups via email. The most stressful time in the lab is when a professor or student has been approved to house a new animal in the lab and you have to research the care requirements and equipment needed for the new animal often under a time crunch, which can be stressful. Communication is key no one minds if you email them too much, not emailing enough is bad.

Every Saturday I personally run physical active sports for all students in residence. This runs from 9am-3pm every Saturday until April 1, 2013. I referee all games which include basketball, soccer, volleyball, zumba, hockey, dodgeball and many other activities. I am head of the sports committee with 30 students. I also take part on vice president committee as the vice president for residence. The hardest part of the job is making sure everything runs smoothly. Nets, balls, equipment, first aid case needs to be at every res sports event. I enjoy working with co-workers and working together. The most enjoyable part of the job is seeing students enjoy themselves at the events I plan. Management works hard and gives notice and also advice when needed. I learned how to work with others and how to be independent to make sure all things are done correctly.

I learned a lot scientifically from my internship, and I am grateful for the opportunity, but it would have been better if they offered me some sort of deal with room and board.  I had to move 3 hours from my hometown, find an apartment (which I couldn't afford), and show up for work within 3 days or I'd miss out on the job.  It also took 6 weeks to pay me my first pay cheque.

For this commitment, I was only offered minimum wage, part time (35 hours weekly) with no chance of extra hours or overtime.  I was also told mid way through my contract that I would not be paid for the 2 weeks of the holiday break.  

Everything just seemed very rushed.  The management cared more about themselves then about helping me out with this 'opportunity'.  I could go on for hours about the broken management but I'll just leave it here.

For staff:
LU has many interests, and it is hard to know which one is most important. For instance, you may think you are proposing a win-win solution to help student programs, but the decision makers need to consider education, certification, student programs, multicultural, unions, partnerships, etc.  It may be hard to pioneer your vision.  May I suggest you accept your employment offer only if they give you the power to do your job from the beginning.
I imagine labour positions are ok.

For Students:
Grad Students, think twice.  Even if you cannot relocate to another uni to do your degree.  I think 2/3 of every grad student I spoke to has been severely affected by LU's administration.  Bad support, poor promises of funding or supervision, etc. has caused students to lose years or $1000s.  Interview 5 existing students before accepting your offer.

Good friendly people as well as great hours. The pay and benefits was good. Different learning experiences everyday.
Lots of opportunities present if you are efficient and effective worker.
Heirarchy of the departments needs to be worked on, but the overall environment was progressive and willing to move forward. Example is the Email Solution provided through Google which saved the institution's hard to come- by - funds immensely. 
I would greatly appreciate the exposure to technology in  the Technical Services department. 
I would say the biggest initial challenge was dealing with the complacent attitude of the individuals (which diminished as they gained confidenceinthemselves and their skill set).

It was an honour for me to take this contract for the one year that the Office of Communications went through a huge transition. It was decided to split the department into two distinctly different departments, namely: Marketing Support and Media Relations. The reorganization required the best from me, handling all the nuances this huge endeavour would present. Once accomplished, it became apparent that the particular office dynamics would not be a healthy environment for me to remain. However, when pressed from all sides I remained principled, worked with integrity, and remained well able to handle the daily stresses of each new day.

A typical day at work involves handing out tally sheets and caller cards and setting up the Callers for their shift. Then I continue to monitor the calls being made throughout the shift and mail away or fill out gift or pledges received from the generous Alumni Members of Lakehead University. I have learned how to deal with difficult, unpredictable situations with Alumni Members via phone and how to provide criticism to the workers I supervise. The hardest part of my job would be giving criticism, though it is always positive, to the workers. The most enjoyable part of my job is hearing all the wonderful experiences of the past Lakehead Students.

Being a member of a collaborative research group, either within or outside, Lakehead University, is essential if one is to make tenure and advance. Lakehead is a medium-sized research-oriented institution with a great many departments, but a small number of faculty, so that one is not likely to find another specialist working in the same area there. Going to conferences and belonging to scholarly associations will keep the faculty member connected to developments in his or her specialty. But the community (despite some brutal winter temperatures) is highly supportive of the university, and housing is far less expensive in Thunder Bay than in other major Canadian cities.

I am an alumni of the School of Nursing at Lakehead University. I also spent 2 months clinical teaching for them. I was treated very kindly by the faculty of the nursing staff while acting as a clinical instructor and was assigned a great and bright group of students to teach and take through a surgical placement. I would highly recommend this for nurses who are new parents and maybe need a bit of flexibility in their work schedule. Its a different type of nursing in which I feel burnout would be relatively low. The pay is better than the front line and it opens the doors to many opportunities for you. I would highly recommend working for Lakehead University's School of Nursing.
