I am writing these from the perspective of someone who was once part of the management team/ salaried employee.

The GOOD:

1. One of the shinning beacons about the company is, the corporate leaders are very pleasant to work with and are quick to provide needed assistance and will find time to connect with you;
2. Ample opportunity to develop your hospitality and customer service skills, some instance will also allow you to flex your B2B skills, vendor and contractor coordination. Essentially, your workplace is a hospitality service, it is given that you will encounter varied types of customers from the kind and courteous to the outright deplorables;
3. Working in the theater industry can be exciting especially if you are a person who loves your pop culture;
4. The crew/ cast members are a joy to work with. Most of them are young or new immigrants which makes up for a vibrant team dynamic;
5. Depending on the season, the work pace can go from slow and relaxed to crazy and wild, this is usually the case when there is a blockbuster release;
6. The company strives to be the trailblazer in the cinema industry in Canada, despite facing a gigantic competition in Cineplex.

The BAD

1. More of a job and less of a career;
2. Like most jobs, depending on the management team, you could be working with some of the most solid, dedicated and respectful people or it could go the farthest South and have the misfortune of working with individuals who are the exact opposite of everything a decent colleague should be. Unfortunately, the company seems to have the habit of hiring employees to manage their theaters with somewhat questionable values;
3. The way the company is structured, there is a slim chance for you to move up to the higher steps of professional ladder;
4. Despite what the company claims that they espouse fair monetary and salary scale, one of the reasons that I left the company is I learned that they have a proclivity higher pay gap even if you and your colleague hold the same position.
5. If you work as a crew, you have zero employment benefits other than a piecemeal discount, regardless of how long you have been employed in the company. I know a handful of crew who worked with the company for multiple years and didn't even get a nickel's worth of increase. I feel like if the company could only get away with more penny-pinching they will not hesitate to just pay you with handshakes;
6. The salary you earn is not commensurate with the amount of work you are expected to put up. As a manager in a theater, you are expected to perform administration task, hospitality tasks, workplace health and safety task, security perimeter tasks, and that's just on top of manpower management.;

Worked here for about 2-3 years and I liked it most of the time. Great management team, flexible with your schedule unless ur new - in which case, they require you to work 3 days minimum & anything less than that, they take away your cast card which is the primary reason you want to continue working for this company. The cast card can get you free movies plus one, and discounted concession. If you're new, they might schedule you for closing concession most of your first shifts as those are the probably the worst shifts - you have to clean everything from the poppers, hot dog machines, wash the dishes, mop the concession floors at the end of the night, and you might be staying there til 12-12:30 am if you're not fast enough in closing. Thus, it can be very tiring to work closing concessions.

Since I've been working there for a while, they mostly schedule me for opening shifts and those shifts are way better than late night shifts as they are less stressful. If you're opening concession, you get to open the concession bar and you pretty much just prep the whole day for the night shift people like making nachos, restocking candies, etc. If you're opening usher, then it's even more chill as you get to just turn on the TVs, open theater doors, check theaters, and wait for theaters to get out so you can clean them.

This job location which is right next to a skytrain station is also very sketchy as I've seen a bunch of drug addicts or homeless people staying in the staircases which are your only way of getting to the staff room since the staff room is located upstairs. The managers have to call in the security often and we end up taking elevator keys to go to the staff room instead.

Honestly, it's a minimum wage job but the job requires you to do much more that it's not worth to be a minimum job. For example, you're doing all three - customer service, food industry, and you're even doing janitor jobs to clean theaters! One time, they had to lay off the janitors who clean the theaters at night because they couldnt afford to keep them (during COVID) so we, their employees, had to do their jobs and stay in later for cleaning shifts. The worse thing about that is they just expected their employees to do the extra cleaning/late-night shifts without any compensation or pay raises. (The janitors make more than minimum and we did their jobs but we only made minimum) Other than that, if you get to be a senior staff member, it's a chill job as they try to accommodate to your schedule and it could be a fun working environment at times.



If you like movies the job can be rewarding. My experience was with one aging theatre that was a low priority for a company trying to rapidly expand in a struggling industry.

I'm not sure I would work for a big chain again but the job could be fun sometimes. I still love theatres and the projection booth feels a little magical.

The theatre I worked at had broken everything, my managers did what they could but without resources they were as demoralized as the staff.
I heard that it was different at the newer locations, but the company seemed to be letting ours die a slow death.

It's hard to care when you're given garbage bags that fall apart, 5 minutes to clean a packed theatre on your own, and constant technical breakdowns to apologize to customers about.

We had one theatre boiling while another was freezing and it was a frequent issue that we were dealing with. 

For a while our water was always hot, even the cold water.

On really busy nights the drink machines would overheat and stop carbonating the drinks. These were maintained by Coca-Cola so there wasn't much we could do about it. Customers would go to the machine and receive hot flat pop without ice.

I put in a repair request for a toilet seat when I started. All it needed was a nut and bolt to keep the seat on, over a year later and multiple requests and the parts never came.

It took over a month to get a work shirt in my size, that was the only one I got. I worked 4 days a week. Again I worked there over a year.

We had regulars that we knew not to leave alone with female staff.

To make things better, when they reopened they didn't call any of the old staff. So they're really not too caring about their workers.

I love working for Landmark Cinemas. I've worked through the transition from Empire to Landmark and have been promoted once. 

I enjoy the people I work with, and the work itself is only ever demanding when it's busy. Once you've worked in a cinema long enough you get the hang of it and everything makes sense. Some cast members are a bit hard to handle but never to the point of insanity. 

I've learned cash management skills and have been allowed the opportunity to learn about the projectors and the way the theatre runs behind the scenes. The hardest part of my job is dealing with guests who are either upset or extremely particular about what they want. Guest complaints can be incredibly easy or incredibly hard to deal with and it all depends on their first point of contact.

While the pay is not anything spectacular, it is understandable. As movie theatre companies don't make a ton of money, and everyone wants to work at a movie theatre, finding people willing to work for minimum wage is extremely simple. Everyone who works here gets a discount on popcorn and drinks and free movies. Considering how much the benefits alone are worth I personally think it's worth working for a low wage. 

While there is not a lot of room for promotion with the turn over etc. if you are a hard worker when the opportunity does arise it's a matter of interviewing well. 

I love working for Landmark Cinemas, and I would certainly recommend it to any fan of the cinema.

I’ve been working here for a while now and I used to love it. The people are so kind and the managers up until recently have been chill. Just overall good vibes. 

Our old manager just left and since then it hasn’t been great. These are the new unrealistic rules:
They took away the greeter’s chair so we have to stand stationary for 6+ hours, all because HR thought too many employees were gathering around podium. This makes absolutely no sense. Gathering has nothing to do with the chair and they didn’t even bring up the problem to staff before getting rid of it. 
They have also told us that now every time someone calls in sick, they have to bring a doctors note for the next shift. It’s almost impossible to get into a clinic that quick, and being sick and having to go out is dangerous for others. It’s unreasonable and unrealistic. 

And these are things that have always been in place here:
They keep hiring new employees making it impossible to get hours even though they tell us we have to be available for at least 4 days in a week. 
We do WAY too much to only get paid minimum wage. I don’t recommend if you have rent to pay. 
The parking is not free. It’s part of its own company but corporate has done nothing to contact the building and designate a couple spots for employees. I’ve paid over $300 in parking. 

I probably would have recommended this workplace before because of the employees, but with these couple new changes, it’s not worth it. 

I enjoy my job. But… there are a few things that make it a less than stellar job. You’re often stuck working long hours, at inconsistent start times. This makes having a life outside of work hard at times. In addition, the pay should be much higher than what it is, simply because the job asks for too much. A typical day might look like dealing with angry customers, or cleaning up some unsettling mess, or being constantly on your feet for anywhere from 5-8 hours at a time. Management is generally pretty good, though there are some times that it feels like things are more serious than they need to be. They often will listen to complaints/constructive criticism, but won’t always do anything to rectify any of those concerns. After all, most employees are still teenagers. As someone with anxiety, this job has definitely not contributed positively towards that. The customer service aspect of the job is a highlight, even though you may deal with incredibly difficult people. Your coworkers will almost always make the job more fun. Though sometimes, who you work will make or break your shift. Overall, it’s not bad. The pay could be better, the working conditions could be better, but the people you work with and interact with usually contribute to a more positive experience.

Be very careful when applying for a job with this company seeing as they don't seem to value any real sense of work. 

While working during the pandemic I was responsible for leading the cleaning of all the theatres' first thing in the morning. If I wasn't working in the morning I was responsible for making sure all the new covid protocols were being followed by the cast and by guests. All of this while our two full-time managers did nothing but sit in the office playing their Nintendo switch and work on their other job leaving the bulk of the work to myself and the other assistant managers.  

While the theatres have been shut down we've been open for food deliveries and that also shun a light on how little understanding of basic food safety upper management had. They like putting a nice dusty piece of paper towel over butter which they serve to guests. When I brought this up to my general manager I was told to stop being so uptight. Also, they just assumed that all the assistant managers would just do the final clean of the theatres while we're shut down and failed to relay any communication.  

Overall if you aren't full-time management you can't make any mistakes or they'll write you up but when they make those same mistakes days later it gets swept under the seats. 

When you’re working at landmark it’s assumed that during a work day you will experience stress and frustration at some point. The guests at times are the cause of this with complaints about Movie passes, limited seating options/movies that are sold out, and a bunch of other stuff that is completely out of our hands. At other times it’s your coworkers who drive you crazy with either lack of communication or lack of willingness to actually do their job. Most times the managers are the cause of this with understaffing, favoritism, and lack of organization. Aside from all that, I don’t regret working here. You learn to deal with stress in high pressure situations, learn to be patient with coworkers, and learn to be more open and communicate your problems with management. I made a handful of really close friends who made all my shifts enjoyable and that I keep in contact with to this day. I recommend this job to younger people (16-25) as it’s minimum wage so you can’t make a living. Free movies and cheap concession is a major bonus.

I have been working at Landmark Cinemas for just over a year and whenever i walk in either to work or to see a free movie, I feel at home. 

The staff (myself included) are either teenagers or young adults and for the most part, carry a welcoming attitude to the customers and other employees as well. The management is sorted in a few divisions but each look after their own section amazingly.

Landmark cinemas host both large and medium size locations, each ranging between 20-50 employees. as such, dividing hours means you are only scheduled between 2-4 shifts per week, be it in summer or during the school year. The little hours one receives may be beneficial to those just starting their career, but it is impossible to live off of, unless you apply for management.

Besides the limited hours, there are few complaints. Landmark offers many perks to the employees such as free movies, cheap priced concessions, and a few employee-only movie nights.

Overall, Landmark cinemas is a good place to start, and I would recommend it to anyone just starting the working life.

I love working here. A typical day consists of busy times when the movies start and in between sets of movies busy times cleaning and restocking before the next set starts as well as checking temperatures for the next set and getting all of your duties done in time along with a break. At the end of the day you have to clean concession and make sure it is ready for the next day. Management is great, some more than others but they are not harsh on employees and will help you if you need it with no judgement. The hardest part of the job is sometimes having to rush to get things done in time or getting complaints about things that you have no power on. All the employees are great to work with, some people are a bit more quiet but you can definitely get them to talk easily, its like a big family. This is a great job if you are in school, especially high school since all the hours are on the weekend or start after school most of the time and you can easily schedule days off.
