I’ll start this review off on a positive note by saying the salary and benefits that the Law Society of Ontario offers are best I've  had. My departmental team was great and I enjoyed working with them as a whole and it was a fun environment, unfortunately that’s all the positive stuff I can say about the job.

Our HR department as a whole was a joke, any complaints or concerns that were brought to them were swept under the rug and or ignored because corporate image is more important than the employee concerns and welfare. Another issue that was compounded by HR was our staffing in regards to the security department, We had 3 staff members move on and for 6 months HR didn’t put up job ads and or conduct interviews despite management putting in requests for staff. Our team was running short for months and the staff were getting burnt out and stress and tension levels were high.


Quite possibly the worst HR department I’ve ever come into contact with. With regards to Senior Management, they can’t be trusted and their lack of transparency, communication and respect for staff shows on a daily basis. They were aware of the struggles within our department and what we were dealing with and did nothing about and refused to hire more staff and kept making excuses on why they couldn’t do it and this ultimately was my last straw and I decided it was time to move on.

The amount of disrespect was on display when Law Society senior management fired the whole security team including the security manager, during this pandemic and replaced them with a contract security provider. During a time where everyone is struggling and you decide to make a decision like that, that leaves people unemployed. The security department was always treated like second class human beings and we didn’t receive the respect we should have. 

Law Society is certainly the place to be if you want good pay and benefits but everything else is lack lustre to say the least, the negatives surely outweigh the positives.

The Law Society of Ontario has been recognized for nine consecutive years as GTA top employer and there is a good reason for this recognition. In fact, there is a clear set of criteria to which the Law Society adheres. This translates in a nice workplace, where people show respect to each other, are friendly and helpful.

The information provided to new employees is well organized and presented professionally. 

Social events are well attended by most employees and upper management,

There is support for the physical and mental well-being of employees, including yoga, pilates, mediation classes and lunch and learn workshops.

French classes are very well conducted.

Nine times a year there are barrister and soliciter exams. I work for the Accomodations team. This means we watch one person (who has an accomodation for a visible or invisible disability) write their exam. The exams take place in a hotel. You are fed breakfast and lunch while you are there, pay scale is $20/hr. There is lots of support, and you can read, do crosswords, sudoku, write, draw or basically do anything that doesn't distract the candidate, as long as it doesn't invlove devices (no electronics allowed in the room). Friendly peole and a calm quiet day. 

Working at the LSO was a nightmare. Management was borderline harassing and micro managing. The stress level there was insane. Senior mangers were too busy to notice that their undervalued employees were being mistreated. Upper management is definitely overpaid for not having people skills. I would not recommend working here if you're looking for a advancing company. HR is probably the worse of them all except for a couple of level headed members. Most of them feel entitled and delegate the most simplest of tasks because it's beneath them.  This organization is a mess!

Changing specs and tight deadlines.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Courteous, professional, accommodating.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Routine process jobs combined with on demand support issues and longer term projects.

Leadership is very disconnected from their employees.  Employees are left feeling under appreciated and under valued.  Expertise and skills are often overlooked, leaving employees feeling disengaged, disempowered and discouraged.  The organization does not practice the mission and values they claim to stand behind.  I expected a higher level of professionalism given the type of organization the LSO is.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Very open communication. Very detailed oriented. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Preserving the integrity of the exam process. Time management is a priority

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very inclusive. Very healthy work environment 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy from beginning to end. Exam days are 12-13 hour days

Good money but toxic workplace culture in general, from the top down. Micro management in most departments. No advancement. No training and no will to train staff. Very little diversity. Management mostly white with rare exceptions. Organization is ancient in the way it works, thinks and treats employees. High turnover, no recognition for the quality of the work. 

Responsible for regulating all lawyers and paralegals in Ontario. 
 Variety of work opportunities within the organization from educational and legal professionals to finance and customer service professionals.  Positive work environment, good salary and benefits compared to industry standards.

My overall experience working at the Law Society is good. The work culture is good. Everyone is professional. Zero tolerance for any sort of human rights violation here. It's a well respected organization. My job sometimes can be very challenging but rewarding,  as I get the opportunity to interact with some very important people such as Lawyers Paralegals,  Judges, etc. Thecowwworking here
