Lazy Loaf and Kettle

I absolutely would never recommend this place for anybody to work at. At first it seems lovely until you realize the managers (especially the owner) doesn't care about your well being whatsoever. I never felt as though my job was secure as when I made a mistake, instead of helping me grow they would tell me "I don't want to see you doing this again, we want you to keep your job." (as if it was worth keeping) the amount of work I was expected to do for the low ball amount I was being paid was not only never worth it, but never appreciated. I often had to work 6 days a week due to other staff calling in sick or the place just being extremely understaffed because nobody sticks around long enough. The big boss upstairs barely runs the place and expects 4 managers to deal with everything on thier own. If you work here long enough, don't bother giving two weeks when you go. They will schedule you for the final two weeks, then erase you from the schedule and not mention it to you (luckily I found out through ex coworkers who told me before the next shift I was supposed to work) so you still waste your time going in. There is a reason this place is a removing door for workers, and don't expect to grow in this company, basically every position is a dead end. The only thing that kept me there for so long was the lovley coworkers that I can call friends I met. 

Not worth working here if you're a student or have additional responsibilities outside of work as they can expect you to pick up slack when it comes to others. Stressful when busy and feels like no one has your back except the poor manager that helps out at their own expense. Responsibilities include everything (barista, server, cashier) including sometimes kitchen work and you're expected to be on top of everything. Customers are alright, but expect to solve their problems if the manager is busy or not there. Great coworkers but a couple of people can be toxic which can affect your mental health. Constant lectures when you mess up by almost all management and kitchen, and they have their favourites which makes you feel like an outsider if you're not one of them. Outdated equipment which can cause harm to workers and not worth minimum wage pay. Staff aren't appreciated which leads to no motivation to come in except for the free lunch and if kind people are working that day. 

Work days move quickly. There is never consistency when it comes to how busy a day will be. Between 10-2 most days is very stressful. Usually understaffed due to people calling in sick or coworkers being sent home early. This job was a very eye opening experience in my world of costumer service. I personally made lots of connections with coworkers and the regulars, and had a lot of fun most of the time. The building is very old, so either it is too hot to think in the summer, or has all the windows and doors frosted/ frozen shut in the winters and you have to wear jackets/ gloves in the back. Managers usually have problems with communication, or will single you out in front of other coworkers. There are occasionally toxic behaviors demonstrated between coworkers that are ignored. Very busy for the size of the building, never enough space. Tips are good. 

Overall it's not a terrible place to work. But the servers and front of house are basically the only people who perform here. All other departments would be lost without them and make them do a lot for them. It's also overpriced and you have to deal with a lot of customer issues with that. The kitchen staff are also very rude and cranky so I'd recommend not getting in their way. If you're having issues with an employee don't bother complaining cause nothing will change either. Now with all that being said, the tips aren't bad (but they are pooled, so even when it's just you and one other employee for the whole day you have to share the tips with everyone...) the front of house manager is amazing and does so much for her staff even when she needs a break. As well as you can chose from a few items to get a free lunch and discounts on the baked goods. 

There are 3 departments plus the owners, bakery, cafe and kitchen. Everyone from bakery and cafe are so nice and fun and amazing to work with, kitchen is nice but don’t  mess with them or you'll get bullied by them. The owners are absent and very inconsiderate. They leave GIANT messes for the staff to clean up with out asking or thanking us, we are not compensated fairly at all considering the cost of the food we sell/make and they always block marked delivery entrances with their cars. If you have any sort of inconvenience to the owners they will literally give you the silent treatment. I would have loved to work there forever if I was paid fairly and treated fairly by the owners because the work was fun and most of the people were great, disappointing. 

EVERYONE PLEASE, do not work here. High turnover rate, Management that treats their staff terribly. They are always understaffed, never give raises and expect everyone to work double or triple hard. 
The kitchen manager is passive and hires whomever walks through the door, only for them to leave promptly due to the 2 bullies that work in the kitchen. Kitchen staff NEVER ever stays. The kitchen manager is fully aware of this behaviour but actively choses to do nothing about it. 

No work to life balance due to constant fluctuating shifts, constant chaos due to lack of organization and greediness, rude and petty management and kitchen staff. 

If you value yourself, do not work here. I promise it will not end up nicely.

They advertise a lot because they go through staff a lot. It’s over priced and very poorly managed. I wouldn’t ever recommend this place to work or eat. Unless you like no job security. The owners son will come in and if he doesn’t like you, will have you fired. He doesn’t live in Calgary anymore. He takes it upon himself to tell you how to do your Job. No introductions. The owners are only about the bottom dollar. They make a killing with their catering and manage to support the original parent owners as well as said useless son, as well as the current (daughter of original owner) and her family. There’s no such thing as raises. DO NOT WORK HERE.

Co-workers were nice and we got complimentary meals every shift, which was amazing. The work is fast-paced and can be enjoyable, but is often understaffed. 

There was also very poor communication from supervisors and upper management. Witnessed management fire long-term employees based on hear-say and without a discussion. The workplace could be very hostile depending on circumstances, seems like they expect the worst from their staff. They don't give raises unless you badger them. The cooks are allowed to behave however they want towards FOH staff and abuse is tolerated. 

The worst management I've ever dealt with by far, from the bottom up.. if you can even call it management. 

The chef's are just glorified prep cooks with no clue how to run a kitchen, and the owners have no idea at all how to run a business and make employees feel welcome.

In the 9 months I was there, I saw almost 10 cooks come and go, the biggest turnover rate imaginable. They still don't seem to realize they have a major problem. As long as the owners make lots of money, they don't care at all about anything.

Don't work here.

Over the years it became a place that tore me down and destroyed my self confidence. Hours were very inconsistent and didn't help work life balance at all. No flexibility from the company and would use very harsh language in private as a scare tactic. Would follow there own policies and have some real occupation hazards. Seen lots of people work hard and get let go for nothing.
