My co-workers were my lifeline in this particular slice of h-e-double hockey sticks. You get minimum wage, and unless you manage to secure a magical full time position, no benefits. The union is supposedly there to help you but I never saw any of that. I actually got hauled into the general manager's office and written up because I accidentally said the f word. No verbal warning, just straight to written.

Management constantly piles on more for you to do and places you in a time crunch because "it's been calculated, it should work." Meanwhile most of them have never worked the floor a day in their life to know exactly what you're dealing with. You're constantly short staffed because they live on a skeleton crew that always calls in. They won't schedule or hire more people because screw quality of care, we need to save money. If you don't manage to clean every toilet on your list and make every bed before the end of your shift, you can bet your supervisor will be seeing you next shift. You get in less trouble for skipping all of your breaks to complete everything on your duties list than you do for missing a few small things in lieu of providing better care.

If it weren't for my co-workers, it would have been mental breakdowns every day. Their good humour and "we've got you because we're in this together" attitude was a lifesaver.

The most important thing that is always a priority is that resident care is always at the forefront and is the main focus of staff. All levels of staff constantly go above and beyond to ensure the residents are engaged in meaningful programs, are happy with the care they receive and are encouraged to maintain their lifestyle the way they want to. 

Management ensures open and constant communication between all departments, are open to new ideas to continue to improve and work hard to ensure staff are shown appreciation for their hard work. 

Residents are always happy and smiling and have great relationships with one another but also with the staff. They are encouraged to participate where they can and play an active role in making decisions within the home. 

The programs are meaningful, innovative and exciting on a daily basis while avoiding the typical routine that is often easy to slip into. Residents help to collaborate on calendar ideas and seem to look forward to the special events planned on a monthly basis. 

LTOR has really grown as a 'family' and the care that staff provide is a true testament to this.

This company's main concern is profits so its intentions and efforts are in conflict with those of the majority of front line staff whose main concern is the health, safety and happiness of the residents.

During my experience with this company I have witnessed tireless efforts by front line staff to serve and care for residents in spite of consistent shortages of staff, supplies and even basic food items.   Concerns raised to management by staff and family members are met with empty promises and staff members who try to protect the well being of residents or who speak out on their behalf are promptly terminated.

The residents are delightful in spite of their difficulties and co-workers, for the most part, remain team spirited in spite of a contaminated work environment created by a greedy company and its deplorably incompetent and uncaring management.

I enjoyed this position as I got to work with wonderful residents of this home. Management and co-workers at times acted inappropriate. The hardest part of my job was the physical labor of lifting foods and heavy dishes. The most enjoyable part of my job was talking with the elderly residents and making them smile with conversation. I am a people person and that's really why I enjoyed working in retirement homes. The residents always thought I was kind and caring at every home I've worked at or volunteered at and that makes me feel like I've accomplished my job. I went to school for social work but I have been doing dietary work also to be able to work in retirement homes because I work well in geriatric positions. I look forward to getting a social work position in the future so I can work directly with people.

Executive Director treats every employee like family, compassionate but firm. LTOR is an environment that fosters growth for everyone. Every employee in every department, regardless of position, will work hard, as this is a retirement home and the focus is on taking care of the residents who are loved, and considered family by all. Hourly employees are paid well and supported by the union but the overall budget for the home is not high so salaries are on the low side. However, the work life balance in a salaried position is excellent and the supportive and collaborative culture make LTOR an exceptional place to work. If you are a compassionate individual looking to make a positive difference in the life of seniors, I highly recommend working at Lifetimes on Riverside. It is the most rewarding job I have ever had. 

I showed up to every shift, pulled extra hours and never called in sick. The residents loved me and were the only good part of the job. The management lied about me as a reference saying they fired me because I never showed up (I didn't call in or miss one shift and I quit, I wasn't fired). Most residents should be in LTC, not independent living, however a PSW certificate was not required and the pay was minimum wage. The staff were okay for the most part, but underpaid and worked too hard so everyone was stressed out. There weren't enough staff scheduled and on top of that were many sick calls. The residents don't get the care they needed. Staff had to complete care, serve meals and do all the housekeeping. Management never covered on the floor and most shifts, the staff didn't even get breaks.

The staff and managers work as a team to create a caring environment for residents.  This past year Lifetimes was awarded the Making Every Moment Matter award that is a reflection of the excellent care provided by our dedicated staff in all departments at all levels.

We are known in the community for our high level of care and for going above and beyond to ensure our residents live each day to the fullest.

Hardest part of the job is saying good bye to residents who become like family.   The most rewarding and enjoyable part is knowing that no matter how long a resident is with us, they are given opportunities for positive social interaction through different activities and community outreach.  Many who come here and were isolated at home find a new lease on life and thrive.

Peterborough Retirement Residence is a lovely place to work and gain the experience one needs to fit into any kind of position. The staff and management are kind and respect the view of others. There is enough room for growth and expert training is given to new comers which help them integrate well in the daily routine of the retirement home. I love the work I do because i get the chnace to meet people from different background cross all works of life. I love the residents and often spend ample time talking to them and helping them. It a great joy to go to work and meet the resident. So far, I have learnt how to deal with people and work greatly in a team as well as build my experience. Working in this retirement home is a great starting point for anyone considering to work here.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with the residents is the only good thing ..management  is terrible..pay is terrible. Staffing problems  all the time .. they now are aloud to hire people  with zero experience

Complaints never get resolved  .. resident care is terrible  because  they hire people  with no experience  .. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very poor .. head office keeps getting  complaints  from  staff about manager and they do nothing  ..manager  lies about everything  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I just do my job .. long term staff are only still there because  we care for the residents  ..otherwise  we  would be gone

lack of hours, has trouble keeping staff in all departments including management, Climate is poor, building is old and remodeling doesn't fix the structural damages from time. building needs to be torn down and re-built.  Staff always short as need exceeds available.  Will take money and not put back into building.  monotonous daily tasks, set backs due to emergency, clients that exceed staff abilities to provide complicate daily shifts, lack of standing operating procedures.
