Little Gym

This is an easy fun workplace, but it’s will not be what you expect. 
When it comes to the lesson plan, you have no freedom or creativity. Every single minute of each class is planned out for you which can be ok, but just so much memorization and it sucks they don’t give you the time to memorize. The team will scold you for not remembering the lesson plan but will also frequently tell you that they make it up on the spot. So there is no way you could have known they are switching up the lesson plan activities until last minute. 
You will be training to do things the little gym way, but told to follow owners way. There are lots of things in the video training that was not suppose happen. However, the owner told me to force the kids to do it.
A personal experience, they compared me to the other employees who have been there for years. I needed more points from online training. I tried to explain to them that learning takes time and no one can learn everything immediately. Their response “ how much time do you need?” I hadn’t even been there 2 weeks, only working part time hours not every everyday. 
From the start I felt uncomfortable here but the kids and parents made me feel welcome. I knew this wasn’t a career and anything long term, but I really feel sorry for the kids.
A lot of the kids are tall, big, and going through growth spurts. To be able to progress in their gymnastics skills they need a strong spotter who can help them through each step of a skill. This doesn’t work when the kids are taller than the owner and the other employees just do not have the strength. Because of this you have many kids that are stuck on a skill level and say “that’s easy” to the skill they have been doing for the past few months. Many other kids just run around the gym because they know they don’t have to listen. These kids see so many employees come and go that they don’t have an interest in learning anymore. 

I hope they can be more open minded and acceptable of their next hire. 

A typical day at work consists of leading or assisting children (from months old to grade school) in gymnastic relates activities, whether it be an interactive game or a gymnastic skill. Each class is very structured, there are specific skills that instructors focus on teaching and a specific amount of time dedicated to each portion of a class. After working here, I learned about how to better connect with children, class management strategies, and how to engage students in an exciting and effective manner. Management is also very friendly and kind; they care a lot about our mental and physical health. They are approachable and I feel comfortable coming to anyone on the team for any questions. The hardest part of the job would be dealing with customers who can be difficult to communicate with, but that is of course, present in any customer service related job. The most enjoyable part of the job is seeing how happy and excited the kids are when they come into the gym and when parents genuinely thank us for our classes. Overall, I really enjoy working at The Little Gym and I would recommend it to anyone who loves gymnastics/dance/sport and helping children find their passions! 

I’ve been working at The Little Gym of Edmonton for about 7 months now and my experience has been very positive. The team members were very welcoming and helpful right from the start. The owners and gym director are mindful of the fact that many of the employees are students and/or have other commitments outside of work, this has been something i’ve greatly appreciated as they have continued to be accommodating and flexible with my busy schedule. The Little Gym is a fun place to work at and is low stress, I find that my shifts always fly by. I definitely think it’s a great job to have especially during the school year as you can maintain a healthy work life balance. Being a marketing student, The little Gym has given me the opportunity to take on some marketing responsibilities such as helping with social media. This is a great opportunity and first step for me to put the concepts i’m learning into practice and something that will be beneficial on my resume in the future. Whether you are looking for a job for the time being or looking for a more long term place of work, The Little Gym provides great growing opportunities and continues to be a healthy and exciting work environment. 

The Little Gym is a wonderful job to get experience working with children in a fun, positive, and fast-paced environment! I worked part-time as an instructor at the Little Gym throughout university. The instructor position taught me many valuable skills that would be transferrable to my elementary teaching career. I have a strong background in dance/gymnastics, so this job allowed me to share my passion with kids, apply the skills I have acquired, and build strong relationships. The gym owners have supported me since day one and continue to reach out to me. I loved the flexibility of this job with school and the positive work environment that made me excited to come into work every shift. I would highly recommend working for The Little Gym of Edmonton!

Started this job a while ago and loved it since the minute I started. Working with the children has been incredible and you can really feel the need for interaction and physical activity for the youth during these precedented times. This is a great job for students as well, management is really flexible with the hours you’d like to work. Fairly decent pay and great benefits can come after a while. Amazing atmosphere to work in to develop more teaching skills along with the chance to learn admin work as well. Highly recommend applying to work here! 

Seemed like an ok job to start, but slowly started realizing how the management didn’t really care about their employees. They promised raises and opportunities to advance in the company. I received one raise that was 25 cents. I was always very available to take shifts and they never seemed appreciative of it. Tried to make us feel guilty if we needed a day off for personal matters or even for medical issues. Was told I could get benefits but never got them.

They expect way too much from the staff to only pay them minimum wage. They put us in unsafe situations and did not offer help when we needed it. 

Working at The Little Gym was anything but fun. I had the worst experience of my life while working here. A typical shift includes: prepping for your classes, teaching them, and doing lobby work when not in class. Other than the children and families, I cannot say a good thing about this place. The management is very cliquey, you will 100% be targeted and treated differently if you’re not “in” with them. I’ve never experienced such a terrible workplace culture. Your mental health will decline as you’re constantly being talked about behind your back, unappreciated, and feeling unwanted. The owners are honestly nice people, but are blind to what goes on due to management picking favourites constantly.

I worked part time as an instructor at The Little Gym during university. The position taught me many valuable skills that transferred to my career working with children. It is a fun, fast paced and positive work environment. The gym directors are kind and supportive. I loved that there were opportunities for further advancement and the hours/shifts were flexible. If you have a background in gymnastics, cheer or dance, you will have unique opportunities to apply your skills here. I highly recommend working at The Little Gym! 

A typical day at work is you come in and prepare your classes. You then execute the class you prepared. In between your classes you do lobby work. I believe I learned how to work in a high stress environment. Management is very cliquey, and you will get targeted if you are not friends with them. The workplace culture is horrendous. You will lose your mental health in this job as people will talk behind your back and not respect you. The hardest part of this job is maintaining your mental health when being targeted, unappreciated, even when you try your best. They will also make slideshow presentations about you, or announcements targeting you if they believe you did one thing wrong. 

Owners do not respect your time as well as have zero idea how to run a respectful business. Owners message you at all hours of the day (text and emails at 2am) and throw a fit if you need a sick day.

Owners do not care about the health and well being of their employees, forces employees to do unsafe things/work with injuries/do not give light duties even with a doctor's note. 

Owners demand everything from their employees with such little pay its disgraceful for the amount of work you do, as well as so much unpaid work.
