Little Short Stop

Things little Short Stop needs to do to become a good place to work:

1: Provide floor cleaner that doesn't come out of the employee's pocket money and warm/hot water to clean the floors with.

2: Provide pens that staff/management doesn't have to purchase with their own money.

3. Go back to being 24/h so that deep cleaning/facing/expiry checks/inventory can be done during the 12am-6am time slot when the store is quiet instead of trying to cram 24 hours of work into 17-18 hours.

4: Get signage to indicate that their non-gas station location do not accept credit card. Gone are the days people looked for the small sign to say a place took credit because because the standard now is to do so. Even cab driver's take credit card and debit these days.

5: Provide wide head/dust brooms to all locations and replacement heads as needed (in the case of dust brooms) to allow for timely cleaning of the floors.

6:Bi-annually have the floor shelves moved and cleaned underneath to prevent potential mold and rot build up under isles.

7:Provide standard (1/2inch-1inch) rubber mats at all cashier locations  to prevent strain and damage caused by standing for long periods of time on cement/thin carpet.

8:Monthly safety checks by the Safety Coordinator. Address any legitimate concerns within 30 days of notice.

9: Secure entry at all locations with a standardized policy for their use (Such as locking the door at 9pm and leaving it locked till 6am) in order to guarantee the safety of the employee base.

10: Provide 2 uniform shirts and 2 uniform pants to all new hires, replacing them with exchange as needed. Can deduct cost from initial pay and then refund after 3 months on the job.

11: Cost of living increase to BASE pay structure annually in order to ensure employee's do not make less for each year they are with the company.

12:BASE pay increase for assistant manager job to industry standard ($17.00+). A bonus is not a paid increase, it's a BONUS. 

13:15-20 hours guaranteed for all part time employees, per week, unless otherwise requested. 

14: Management at each store should have specific duties scheduled on a weekly/monthly bases as needed. Example: Every Wednesday third shift is responsible for checking the candy isle for any potential expiring product. As is product can go MONTHS out of date because there is no system to track it.

15: Reward and incentive programs (competing between stores) should be based on the sales and performance of NON-management and management should not be a part of these programs. Having a manager keep $300 while giving their employee's $25 each is absolutely unforgivable. Management already get a performance based bonus, they should not be taking money out of staff's hands as it just encourages staff to not care.

16: Take the camera feed for the in store camera's OUT of the backroom and put it on the front counter where the cashier can actually use it to monitor for theft. Expecting your staff to watch for theft when they are blind to 2/3's of a store is just asking for massive product loss.

This job isnt for the faint of heart if your looking to be appreciated and moved for advancement. The employees and management at my particular store were good. The pay is minimum and the only way you get a raise if you advance however I see more qualified responsible employees get shafted over favoritism or whoever's is giving the manager the most attention. 
You could be there for the week or over 20 years and are paid the same. 
Head office is a joke. Nothing gets done except for casual phone calls or pop ins. 
I've witnessed a district manger being rude to some employees who dont go gaga that they're there. 
Your expected to fully fill your shift if your sick or whatever maybe they give you the numbers for the other employees and if you cant get it filled thr manager will fill but with the threat of write ups. I'm pretty sure there are laws against that. 
Also. There are no breaks. Unless you smoke. I've seen people who work full time hours lean or take a seat in the office for a couple of minutes and get the first degree about laziness and if you cant handle this job then maybe this job ain't for you.
They expect 100% the employees who do the work and work hard get no appreciation and ones who do not pull their weight ( like stocking or checking expiry or putting deliveries away) get talked about behind their backs but essentially get a pass. 
There are no incentives for employees. My mistake there are. 10 cents for every incentive bar you sell etc. Its a joke. 
If a supplier has incentives if we achieve it we get a 25 dollar Visa and management gets anywhere from 100-500 could be more but this is what I've seen. I'm sorry. The manager does do a ton of work more then their pay grade however if its the employees that made that incentive why is it we always get short changed.? Especially when managers get a couple of actual bonuses from head office. Which takes me to my next point. Manager bonus was in the thousands. When min wage increased they dropped it drastically. I find that most of the managers were staying below their should be pay grade for these bonuses. No benefits even for full time. 
If head office reads this take it as a lesson. Your store is a revolving door. You cannot get a head with treating your employees like dirt and slaves. 
Theres no opportunity. Theres no life because if you cant work when they want you too or when sickness or emergencies happen it's all or nothing. 
I still work for your store. You wondering why? Because I enjoy seeing the customers. But the way things are run you could definitely make an improvement. 
You've been open for 50 years? Pride yourlsefs as local and not franchised. Maybe you should franchise because at least some of your workers could get a decent wage holiday breaks benefits. If you cant afford to treat your employees and management right then I feel for you. I feel for the employees I'm at a disgust how you treat them. Maybe take care of the stores and people before continuing on opening new stores. Also I was at a new location that have the money machines. Hands down put that in every store especially the busiest of stores.

I worked at shirt stop for 8 yrs... Over half of that time I was manager. I loved most customers that came in to my location as a lot of them were regular staff.. They become part of the family.. 
Head office however really didn't care, and over looked a lot of things. No appreciation of the staff, or even acknowledged their existence. 
No chance of raise even if you are there for 10 yrs as a cashier... Unless minimum wage goes up.. No benefits except for management.. Not even assistant managers. Pay for management also isn't the greatest as night shift made.. 25 cents  less then I did. He was new .. Again I was there for 8 yrs.
They changed our bonus structure once minimum wage went up.. And instead of being able to make up to $5000.00 quarterly it went to $750.00 quarterly and paid salary. No overtime pay as manager even if you work holidays...
They expect you to live your life around what if something happens, and your DM is completely useless for helping out when you are stuck for staff.. 
I worked a 8 hr shift and had my night person call in saying they couldn't make it, I tried to get  staff to cover with no luck, I called other stores and most managers were already gone and were to no help. I contacted my DM and her words were "well you better get some sleep then", so needless to say I was the one that worked the night shift after already working 10am til 6pm that day.
When I brought up no appreciation of staff from head office, and no desire to give staff raises after they were with the company, my DM told me if I didn't like it maybe I should quit.. So, low and behold after 8 yrs with the company, I decided to leave the store and not look back.

A typical day at work is you come in about 15 mins before your shift to get your till ready to operate.Then once your up and running you sign in on the sign in sheet and check the task sheet for jobs they have assigned you to do for that day. Throughout your shift you serve customers, be polite, friendly and as helpful as you can be and complete any assigned tasks. Some coworkers are easier to work with and get along with than others.The managers are good, they require you to come in on time and do what your supposed to do. They also give helpful tips and suggestions and try to create a happy atmosphere and healthy environment for workers and customers to be in, as well as keep the store running smoothly. I'd say the hardest part of the job would be trying to get all of your tasks done before the end of your shift if its a busy day and there are customers coming in and out. The most enjoyable part of the job is getting to interact and meet all sorts of different people that come in and out in a day.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Learning to work as a team and at faced pace area. Help to polish my computer skills like typing, excel use, PowerPoint presentations and made me to communicate with my clients comfortably and to improve relations with customers. It made me to extrovert from introvert and far more confident and creative to solve any issue at workplace as well as in day to day life

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is no such thing that made me stressed but I’ve loved working with Little short stop Ltd. I got overwhelmed in the starting of this work but Everyone offered help and make my life so much easier and I did and still trying my best to continue this tradition of helping to newbies

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Work aura depends on store to store but If I would give my opinion on the Hr department then I would say just like family. I did start as Part time but they did offer me high position as I got my work permit and always consider employees’ needs time to time.

Come in count my tickets, money and get everything nice and neat for the customers.
Every time I work, I learn a little bit of everyone's life. Pretty interesting on what stories you can hear in a 6 hour shift. Building a relationship with each individual customer is great. Makes them trust you and like you which bring their business back.
Management is good, nice, don't stress you out, always a phone call away if needed. Hands on type but just from their homes.
Nothing is hard about this job. Its like working with a huge bunch of friends. If anything its cold when your stocking the fridges, but that's minor stuff.
Most enjoyable I would say is seeing the customers faces when you give them winning numbers on lotto, or even throwing out a joke to make their day.
I only wish It could give me full time hours and a better wage than minimum .. It would be a perfect job.

I worked for the company for 5 years. I was treated decently. It is a great job for when you’re a student because there is a variety of shifts, but hours are not always guaranteed. However it is not a job to look at for long term. There is absolutely not benefits unless you’re a manager. There are no raises, even though most employees are expected to do the work of the managers. You get paid minimum wage unless you become a manager, and even then you will never get your bonus, you get a minimal salary and no overtime even when you can put in 80+ hour weeks

You're over worked, under paid. Company will keep adding new tasks to your job, with no wage increase, then say you're not a "team player" if you complain about it. 

Now that we sell alcohol, stores are constantly getting robbed, and you likely will receive a write up if you get robbed on your shift. 

Hours will not be consistent. Working hours provided are good if you are enrolled in post secondary and can't attend work often, most store locations are very understanding if you need accommodations due to being a student, however, don't expect your hours to go up on your summer break. 

Most of the staff I've worked with were amazing, if you have a good manager, the job can be wonderful short term, but I wouldn't personally recommend sticking around long term

I've been with short stop for years and I am very sad to have to leave, but I can no longer handle the job. After 15 months of work you make $0.50 more than minimum wage and that is it. No competitive wages. Some managers I have worked for have been fantastic, but a majority of them are lazy and sit in the office. They don't do floor work and leave employees with daunting tasks to do in short shifts and come down hard when you can't get it all done. There is a reason this company faces a high turn over rate with staff. I loved my time with them when I had the good managers, but it seems they're all gone now.

there was very good teamwork while working there; coworkers covered for you if you needed a break, immediately helped out when the counter got busy and did not mind covering a shift if they were able
to. However management could use some improvement; often times the manager over looked things we talked about regarding the schedule and days unable to work, we spoke about being uncomfortable working late night shifts alone and nothing had changed, not to mention I never received a name tag my whole time working here (yes it was brought up at least two to three times).
