I was very happy to be chosen for this job and excited because I wanted to gain work experience in Canada. Even though my shifts were only 4 hours, I didn't feel the time passing quickly, and I really enjoyed my work at the food bank. I learned that teamwork is very rewarding, and it gave me the opportunity to meet all kinds of people.
I also learned how to manage situations effectively. The work environment was professional, and everyone was friendly.
We all tried to be in sync and work together to get things done. I felt really happy when I was helping clients and welcoming them because it gave me a sense of connection and empathy with the community I live in. It was truly a rewarding experience.

The board of directors does not understand the work of the Food Bank. Staff are underpaid and health benefits are meagre. I left when the board refused to give proper pay increases and a proper health plan as promised.

The board is stacked with buddies of the co-directors who don't have any HR training. Certain staff were treated better if they were a favorite. One co-director puts preference on vanity projects like a greenhouse instead of taking care of the people.

The only thing that kept me there so long was the loving and caring volunteers and a couple of good staff people.

Approach with caution if you want to work here.

While the work, itself, is not particularly difficult, the demand for the food bank's services can make for some very busy days.  Tasks vary, from sorting food donations to assembling food hampers to general warehouse tasks (stocking shelves, order picking, heavy lifting, etc.).

The volunteers that assist with the operation of the food bank are quite diverse, from teenagers to the more mature, reflecting a wide swath of the community.  The common desire to help those in need creates a sense of unity and esstablishes a very positive organizational culture.

Sorting donated food and creating food baskets

A typical day at work was packing hampers, organizing food into it's proper place, packing and lifting heavy boxes to be transferred. 
Hardest part was working in a small environment with 5 other workers.

Love volunteering here, always nice to help others. I have been volunteering here for years and I couldn't imagine it any other way. Plus as the volunteers you get to see the behind the scenes stuff of how the food bank works and runs which is pretty neat as well.

You are required to help with filling hampers and general warehouse labour. It is a very relaxed environment, able to listen to music and help those in need of food, drinks etc.

My volunteer experience at the London food bank was amazing. I got to help people by making hampers for families in need. I also learned that there are some specific things (like cereal) that are more needed to be donated than others.

Knowing that you can help when your able bodied and have time to give. Volunteering has always been part of my life. The jobs are physical but the reward is gratifying.

great place to get some volunteer experience in dealing with people. was a great time and the people were so nice. everyday you had something different to do and work was not too intense to deal with.
