Lone Star Texas Grill

It's a kitchen job. You'll be hot, sweaty, and rushing around all the time. The hours are long and unpredictable and you'll probably be under paid for the amount of work your actually do. That's just the industry and you come to expect that.

That being said... Lone Star is one of the best restaurants I have worked at. The management team I worked with is so incredible and supportive. The whole team is like a family. There is very little division of FOH and BOH, which is unlike, I would say, the majority of resturants. Lone Star also has very high standards in regards to cleanliness and food quality. 

A typical day in the kitchen would be to arrive and check over the station you will be working at. Make sure it is clean and stocked. Then you cook. If you are working the headline shift, you are the supervisor and are ensuring the smooth operation of the kitchen in co ordination with the FOH manager. The headliner is also responsible for either opening or closing the store depending on which shift they are on.

Your work hours are very unpredictable. Your schedule will have a start time and you just work until you're told to go home. So that means you could come in and only work 3 hours or get stuck there for 12. Also business varies a lot and certain times are slower. Meaning one week you might work 20 hours and the next 45.

Staff meals for BOH employees (cooks, headline and dishwashers) are dirt cheap. You pay a flat fee of $10 a pay check, so if you take a staff meal 5 days a week it works out to be $1/meal. FOH employees get 25-50% off depending on what they order and everyone gets that discount when they are not working too. If come in with some non-employees you can use your discount on everyone's bills of up to something like 8 people!

It's over 14 years that I had to write this review. After seeing the 40+ year anniversary on CTV, I had to write this.

I worked at the location on Dalhousie street. Well, it was something to remember.  I was excited to get hired and was a big fan of the food.

1st week set in and the MGT team asked how I liked it, I said it was ok. And MGT claimed to have a hard time hiring people and getting them to stay. I found that odd.

2nd week rolled in and now I could see why. Teamwork did not exist or I should say, it was not promoted. If you work on a station, you need to remain on that station, you can't help others on other stations. So you have a people standing around, while you work your heart off. The supervisor, (not sure where he came from..) but would stand there with arms crossed and just make negative comments, felt like being in a prision. Terrible feeling.

Growth, zero. Fun, only if you're into the in-crowd and go drinking after the shifts.

Worst experience, bad pay and well.. The MGT team and CEO seems to strive on making customers happy, and 40 years of gloating.. may wanna think about the staff who make it happen, think about "team work" / as I think there is a "football team" type mentally rooted somewhere, and "team work" is key to win the game. May wanna think about that -- Myself I have moved on and I'm working with a company that thrives well - bye bye

The key to working at Lone star Texas Grill was simply to follow orders to the best of your ability. There was many times where the restaurant was simply busy, and you had to prioritize. The kitchen would be angry because of the heat, or being out of stock, servers would be doing there thing that gets them motivated for tips, managers would be all flustered because restaurants are He11 in of themselves... Although even with all the good times and bad, what set Lone star apart from other Food retailers in the area was the tortilla making station in front of the customers. From the 2 years that I worked there, I found that the kids loved playing with the dough we would hand out, and if you made really good tortillas, many people would be happy with our specialty fajitas. Some of the servers would complain that this customer was unhappy, or the kids were too rambunctious... But if you ask me, nothing made my day more than seeing kids come in asking to see if they could have some dough to play with, then running off smiling. So if you ever do decide to work at lone star, or even go there,... I would definitely ask for the tortilla station.

Lonestar Texas Grill was my first profited job, and by far the most intense. Despite the fact I was new to the work field, the job I was particularly hired for tested my abilities to quickly adapt, multi-task and push to limits that I had not expected to see in myself, prior to joining the force that was the Lonestar Team. 

I had required of me a structured, and very well organized regime of standards that I had met with enthusiasm, and with the utmost seriousness considering this job was to me, like gaining a quality or recovering a reflection of your best self. 

I was tested, determined and ranked as one of the most effective hostesses by a secret shopper, and could not have done so without the positive enforcement that Lonestar had encouraged, on behalf of the faith they had in their employees. I will always honour my position as a Lonestar team member, and recommend to those who want an advantage in the work field to apply to Lonestar Texas Grill, and harness their principalities, as it will prove beneficial to you and your learning curve for any future.

A typical day at work includes lots of cooking and cleaning. Depending on the station i was assigned for my shift, my responsibilities were different. If i was the head line station i would be responsible for either opening the kitchen and getting all the equipment and stations stocked for the day and setting the kitchen up for the night, or cleaning and closing the kitchen down and setting the morning guys up for a smooth open.

I learned many different leadership skills, like training new employees, learning to work with employees with different skill sets, and how to work in a team environment.

Management is always trying to help improve the overall dining experience by getting every body rallied up for the night or helping out someone if they fall behind. 

The hardest part of my job is dealing with the sometimes fast paced environment and try and get all the food in a timely manner. 

The most enjoyable part of my job is the group that i work with. We're always having fun, making jokes and trying to improve the overall attitude of everyone that's working.

In my role as a host at Lone Star, a typical day involved greeting guests, managing waitlists, answering phones, and coordinating seating to ensure smooth service during busy periods. I learned the importance of clear communication, multitasking, and staying calm under pressure, especially during peak hours. Management was supportive and organized, providing clear expectations and stepping in when help was needed. The workplace culture was fast-paced and team-oriented, with staff relying on each other to keep the restaurant running efficiently. The hardest part of the job was handling long wait times while keeping guests satisfied and maintaining a positive attitude, but this helped strengthen my customer service and problem-solving skills.

I worked there for about a year and a half. Not much to say other than it was just like any other corporate kitchen you can come across nowadays, except with fajitas on the menu, and corny "ally-rally" pre-shift chants in which all of the servers in the restaurant completely abandon their guests for about 5 minutes to gather in the back to hoot and holler about shift goals? Definitely, a fun environment if you're into that. In regards to money, Lone Star does offer good amounts of hours if requested (usually) since they are open from 11am - 12am and bi-weekly tip outs also come in handy. I did appreciate the organization of paycheque summaries/statements, emailed schedules, etc. Overall though, mediocre management, mediocre food, and just a mediocre experience.

A typical day at Lonestar would start off by greeting everyone you would be working with that day. I learned a couple things from being at Lonestar such as, accountability, value, demand, and how attitude in the work environment is a key part in effect business, and communication among guests and co-workers. Management was awesome, easy to talk to, an they all had roles to play worked on par with the employees instead of laying back. The hardest part about the job would be keeping a steady pace, and prioritizing exactly what needs to be dealt with in rush hours by yourself, or with one other person. That resulted in high stress and little breaks throughout the shift. The most enjoyable part about being at Lonestar would have to be the co-workers simply due to the engaging small talk when transitioning from one place to the next.

When starting at Lone Star management was great. New GM was hired and the work environment went downhill from their. Majority of management staff left and much of their responsibilities were passed down to employees making minimum wage. This company does not care about their employees whatsoever it’s very clear all they care about is making money to stay afloat. Would not suggest working here until the current management team is no longer there. Current GM has terrible interpersonal skills and very little if any management skills. He belittles many servers working there and line cooks but he is unable to do their jobs as he has zero full service restaurant experience. 

Frankly the only reason many of the staff stayed on for so long is due to the friendships created in the work environment under previous management. 

Working at Lone Star is okay at first. Some coworkers are cool, and I learn how to handle fast-paced shifts. The tips can be decent on busy nights, and a few customers actually make the job fun. But when it gets hectic, people start acting up. Managers and staff get rude, crash out, or take their stress out on others. The vibe feels fake, like people smile to your face, then talk behind your back. If you’re not part of their little group, it’s like you don’t matter. There’s a lot of pressure and not a lot of support. It’s fine if you just need a part-time job for quick money, but if you’re looking for a respectful or positive environment, this isn’t it. I’m just here stacking my coins and moving on soon.
