Manitoulin-Transport

I was actually employed by Manitoulin but contracted to Hydro One and managed the transportation of materials from the Hydro One Barrie warehouse to all of Ontario. This included overseeing trailer loading and ultimate movement of materials.
The Hydro One experience taught me logistics from the warehouse point of view. Issues such as inventory control and pick and pack were dealt with on a daily basis and my responsibilities were impacted by the activities of the warehouse due to the fact my office was actually on Hydro One premises.
I managed the entire operation without staff and actually dealt with the Hydro One warehouse manager face to face on a daily basis. It was truly a great relationship between peers and made my job so easy. Him with his warehouse knowledge and me with transportation it was a good fit.
The hardest part of the job was being called out for emergency material requests at two or three in the morning and I don't really consider that hard. Even lining up power to move the materials was relatively easy because Hydro One was priority one with Manitoulin therefore what I asked for was provided immediately.
My relationship with Manitoulin senior management and Hydro One staff was without a doubt the most enjoyable part of the job. I was given a job and was given all the tools necessary to do that job. I was allowed to manage the Hydro One/Manitoulin contract and succeeded because I was given the tools to provide Hydro One with the service they required.

As this is a branch, managers are only middle managers with a complex and by-the-seat-of-your-pants policies. Depending on their mood is the determining factor for a solutions outcome and you could be yelled at for a magnitude of reasons, some including manager's own stupidity with remembering they were the ones implementing certain procedures. You'll regularly have the manager call you random degrading and insulting things to your face and certainly behind your back in front of other employees. You'll regularly have yelling matches between coworkers as managers pit each other against the next. It is generally a bad work culture, bad work environment and poor work life balance. Training is very straight forward (and extreamly in depth, hours on hours of training to complete) and any procedure is set out by head office, but you'll never have time or the opportunity to do any of it, manager will also come after you over this (they will even suggest after working a 10 hours shift to go home and work on the training or maybe even over your weekend) as they are rated on a vast number of things and will not hold back making sure you know of a mistake, but have a hard time making efforts to find a solution to correct the issues.

Do not work for this company. They don’t train people. They hire people in masse, don’t teach them how to do their jobs and then frequently berate them for poor performance. The management at this company is stubborn and refuses to listen to any criticism. They have no problem holding you accountable but won’t allow themselves to be held accountable. The company expects overtime but won’t give you benefits. In order to receive benefits you have to be given an evaluation where you will be deemed good enough to be given a position that will give you benefits. I received one evaluation where I was told I wasn’t good enough and then told that I would receive my second one the following week. I never received my second evaluation and when I had asked about it I was told it would happen right away. Months went by and I never received it. Hours are also inconsistent. During certain times of the year they will expect you to work overtime as they are busy. Then for the other half you will work very little. Terrible company, they don’t offer benefits. There are people there that spent five years working there before receiving benefits. No one should work here. They are a horrendous company full of useless management.

As a Heavy automotive technician at Manitoulin my experience has been nothing less than positive. Management is tight with times (just like everywhere else), but still fair.  The work is relatively clean and decent, the fleet is pretty well maintained. As a female in the trade my experience in this trade (9+ yrs), hasn't always been the nicest. I can say very honestly that this is one company that I've never experienced a hint of preferential treatment, or exclusion. My direct foreman has made a world of a difference, and goes above any beyond to work just as hard for his team as we do for him. I can say without any hesitation that when I look at any negatives I could try to point out, compared to any other similar workplace experience I've had, this place doesn't have any red flags. They have pretty high(but achievable) standards. If you want to work here, the main things they look for - knowledge (obviously), more important - a good attitude, the teams and shifts put together here are strategic, they work together well and all have their own different vibes, and MOST importantly - punctuality. Showing up, and on time, is not an option here, and they are very upfront about that one. 

The company itself is not that bad, the problem in Hinton is the manager, he will make you do all the work as he sits in jasper all day with only a few drops, he’s a sneaky man, meaning, if he don’t like you he will make your life rough, the pay isn’t the best, I personally have never seen a boss treat and backstab ppl the way he does, I have left awhile ago and he still puts me and a lot of other ppl down, he should not be the manager at this particular place of employment, I have seen it first hand and was part of it till he started on hating me, I was there for sometime, I do warn all that is thinking of applying.....look elsewhere, the other ppl there are great to work with, it’s just him. There is no team there, it’s all about what works for him, he’s a working manager that doesn’t like to help. The lies were to much for me. I also know, me posting this will get his little head thinking of ways to ruin me. Something has to stop there. Trust me on this ppl, I know first hand. Lol, if you get injured, (which is very easy), he won’t talk to you or ask if you are ok, makes it look like it was your fault, ignores you for weeks. So if you like to be backstabbed, put down, or even ignored, apply, I am not a disgruntled ex employee, I have seen a lot when I was there, best thing that ever happened to me was leaving.

I had a great first while working for Manitoulin, The incentive pay worked out very well and I was making great money. Some of the shifts were tough, but it always felt rewarding. The other drivers and dock staff were always willing to help you, all you had to do was ask nicely. The terminal manager did not seem to care about much of anything at all. If you reported an out of service defect or asked him a question generally all you would get was "OK" and a blank stare. One morning I out of serviced 3 tractors for major defects, I was yelled at and sent home. After having an injury on the job, I noticed my pay had gotten smaller. The manager was taking approximately $120-300 off of every shift I worked, full loads were disappearing off of my incentive printouts a week after I worked the shift. 2 days after asking about this (with proof) I was terminated.

I have heard this man is no longer the Terminal Manager in GP, which would make it a fantastic place to work. The benefits were awesome, all sorts of kick backs. Annual bonuses directly to your RRSP, $450 a year in clothing/boot allowance.

If you want to work at a place where management pretends to care about its employees then this will be a great job for you. Yes i have learned alot about moving freight. Thats about it. When you are hired here you are considered permanent PART time and paid as such. You work fulltime hours NO benefits (Unless you are a chosen one) No paid sick days. If you want to do a MINIMUM 2 Person job by yourself and get scolded when your behind and miss a cut time even though you have asked your direct supervisor for Help and they say that there is nothing they can do but then ask for you to grab/do things for them and have to because of seniority then you will like it here. Oh and if you smoke then you Get as many smoke breaks as you want but if you dont smoke then good luck on hardley getting a lunch. Only 30 min lunch if you take longer then you get in Trouble. The work safety is a joke all the forklifts are half alive some have no breaks and some have no lights. There is so much more i could say about this place.

I had resigned from the accounting department after only 6 weeks due to the following:

Training was minimal, forced, and inadequate.  Often times resorting to repeated attempts by the trainer to understand what they were doing themselves.  This was because each person had their own separate duties that others weren't familiar with.  When an employee leaves, there is no one truly capable of training the new person if they are hired after the former employee leaves. So the trainer could be anyone but not someone who has experience with what they are training you to do. 
 
Managers develop personal opinions about employees that affect their ability to manage properly the employee or the work being completed by that employee.  

I would not recommend this company for the accounting department unless you already live in the area.  But the reward for the risk of moving up to work for the accounting department makes it not worth it.

What is the best part of working at the company?
You can pull your vacation pay with out taking the time off. The benefits are also worth while. And the boot allowance is given to you on a prepaid card so no waiting for refunds

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The time deadlines because they have no stock with it being a cross dock you have to wait for the p&d drivers to return with shipments to go out bound

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
There is always room for improvement with anything but if you treat people with respect that is returned to you

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Most times your are waiting or checking when something will be delivered. But when the shipments arrive and it is time to load the line hauls it can be chaotic

This company is all about team drivers,they are preferred payed above average in the industry and definitely in the company.. if you are non designated hwy driver about $1300 clean weekly is the ceiling that’s for all hours maxed while team driving is $1700 bottom line on about under 50 hours work week.. full work week easy over $2000 a week but that’s with 0 home almost which is what the most of the team drivers face.. it’s super hard to make a balance there is either or!! You make all the money and no home time or you make little and still no home time 😃! Schedule can be brutal for non designated today 14hrs tomorrow 2hrs day after you get send home 3hrs into your shift,,so majority choose flat rate $300 a day before deductions as a more secure option which is available..
