This job can be a hit or miss depending entirely on your foreman and supervisor. If you’re lucky to work under a good one, you’ll build solid friendships and enjoy some camaraderie. But beyond that, don’t expect much in terms of career growth management takes no real initiative to help you advance.

If you’re looking to complete your electrical training, this is not the place to rely on. They won’t even register you as an apprentice until you’ve put in a few years, and if you get laid off or fired before that, you’re out of luck. They don’t care about setting you up for long-term success, and it’s clear they only see workers as expendable.

Pay is one of the few positives. If you’re skilled and experienced, you can make really good money, and there’s even a bonus if you’re well-liked. The schedule is also decent you usually finish by 2 PM, which gives you the rest of the day to yourself. However, when deadlines approach, it becomes overwhelming. Early starts, constant delays due to understaffing, and management’s expectation to have one man do the work of many make things much worse.

One of the biggest downsides is the way they handle overtime hours. They refuse to pay proper time and a half, and instead give you straight pay meaning you lose even more money in taxes. It’s frustrating and unfair, especially considering how hard everyone works and the expectations to say yes to overtime. When it comes to meeting their needs you are expected to comply, but good luck getting anyone there to consider what's good for you.

The work environment is heavily dependent on the foreman. Some are great, willing to teach and help you improve but others are outright abusive. There’s verbal mistreatment, unnecessary pressure, and a disregard for basic worker rights. Breaks are often discouraged, and some psycho-micromanaging supervisors even go as far as telling workers they can’t grab coffee.

On top of that, health benefits keep getting downgraded. The company is cheap, and every couple of years, they somehow find an even worse insurance plan.

The recent mass layoffs have made it clear just how little management values its workers. They had no hesitation in cutting people loose in large numbers, showing zero consideration for the time and effort these employees put in. Instead of finding ways to support or retain workers, they simply got rid of them without a second thought.

Another major issue is their complete lack of consideration for where you live when assigning job sites. There’s no system in place to make sure workers are placed in reasonable locations, meaning you could end up commuting ridiculous distances every day, even when there are open job sites much closer to you. If they had an actual HR department that handled important things like this, they could easily develop a better system but it’s clear that efficiency and worker well-being are not priorities for them.

Overall, while you might meet some great people and have a few good moments, management ruins a lot of the experience. The toxic work culture, lack of support for apprentices, refusal to properly compensate overtime, disregard for job security, and failure to organize job assignments fairly make it hard to recommend this job in the long run. If you’re just here for the paycheck and don’t mind the problems, you can make it work but don’t expect them to care about your growth, well-being, or quality of life.

Pros: 
-competitive pay (the biggest reason people still work here)
-when they have a lot of work coming in, they hire almost anyone
-as a green apprentice, you're doing real electrical work on day 1
-lots of opportunities to work independently, depending on task
-large sites, so usually lots of time to sharpen skills at each task
-wide range of possible duties with opportunities to learn
-pretty lax about time off, whole company takes holiday weeks off
-some really great coworkers/management, but depends on site
-nice merch

Cons:
-seems like the HR department is one guy, takes ages to help you unless it's stupid easy or in the company's best interest
-they try to hire more apprentices than they legally can by delaying registration 
-lots of new apprentices working with minimal instruction/supervision
-they teach apprentices one thing and keep them on it for as long as possible, you really need to advocate for yourself to gain a well-rounded skill set
-they want you to take one 15 min break for a full day of work
-when work gets slow, expect massive layoffs and hope they like you




Mayfair does not register their apprentices in good time. Many workers have thousands of hours at the company (1-2 years or even more) before they are allowed to become registered apprentices. They dangle registration like a carrot, a reward for good behavior and hard work. Of course if an important person's son or nephew is hired, they are registered immediately. 

Division of labour is extreme and a comprehensive instruction in the different aspects of the trade is not forthcoming. Mayfair management will make you do the same extremely simple job every single day for months and months, for example to screw on cover plates to switches and plugs, or to connect light fixtures.

On a positive note, the wages are competitive, workers often have a high degree of autonomy and freedom, good work-life balance, fun company events (bbqs, christmas party, etc)

There’s lots of steady work in the pay really good. I love you at this company. I felt as if as an individual you are n in overall toxic environment and culture ot recognized at all I would stay late often on my own time just to try to get ahead or meet deadlines without booking or expecting Extra pay For example, if I stayed an extra five or 10 minutes to finish the task I was on I didn’t like to leave things unfinished but if I was two minutes late because of the street car, you better believe you’re gonna get sent home management constantly, putting down abusive inappropriate things in the workplacein overall toxic environment and culture 

I have worked for this company for 2 years and they could not care for you at all. Having your tools stolen from you and not returned, as well having other workers physically harassing you. Many time have I reported this incident, leading to me quitting because no one would take me seriously. 

Foreman's wont care for you unless they favor you, as well they have favorites. If they don't like you, they will have you chip for the rest of the week. They will yell at you as well teach you nothing and leave you there on the 18th floor with a job that a only a 4th year would know.

Management is horrible as they will lay off workers however seems fit. They do not value their workers at all.

I would NOT RECOMMEND WORKING for this company.

Mayfair Electric ltd has numerous sites around Toronto. They have several experienced foremans with high expectations of their workers which keeps a site with high demands flowing day to day. They keep their hours pretty consistent to a typical 40 hour work week. When work gets tight there are large lay offs but I don't think it's unusual for workers to return to the company a year or two later.

When I worked as a co-op student for this company, I knew that being in the trades would be a stressful situation to be in. I worked as hard as I could but some of these guys made my days seriously stressful that it took its toll. No matter how hard I worked, my co-workers made my day stressful. Some understood that while others did everything they could to make my life miserable. I loved the job and the work but not when my co-workers were always in my face to bother me over something stupid.

in my experience mayfair has taught me a lot over a short period of time. first month I did a bit of everything including slab, pulling wire, bending pipe, installing lights etc. Mayfair pays union rates and has a great benefits package. foreman is very professional and straightforward, having a blast working here so far.

Dont tell you about benefits or how the pay works. Don't pay you for overtime, good at using people for probation and letting them go. Don't teach good electrical just boring mundane tasks given by people who will treat you with no respect.


hired too many apprentices and rushed work too much. otherwise great job and great people. learned a lot and grew as a worker. foremen were great and other workers even better.
