Through the  internship experience with Mitacs on the Toronto Tower Renewal Project, in order to evaluate the energy consumption, I successfully analyzed the energy consumption (electricity consumption from their utility bills) of 136 units of a Multi-Unit Residential Building (MURB) over a three year period using the weather normalization energy benchmarking software PRISM. I also investigated the relationship between environmental attitudes and energy consumption of the tenants by analysing collected data using statistical analysis software SPSS. The detailed statistical results showed having high environmentally-conscious attitudes towards the energy consumption has a positive effect on occupant’s energy consumption level.
My strong time management and strong interpersonal skills allowed me to work with internal and external stakeholders and overcome problems throughout the project to meet academic and building owners’ requirements within the promised timeline. Regular meetings were held to ensure that energy efficiency measures were incorporated into the design.

Working at Mitacs I feel very connected to the mission and constantly reminded of the importance of our work for the country and our local communities.  The team is very supportive and the work environment is very flexible.  It is a goals driven environment with less emphasis placed on sitting in a cubicle every day and more emphasis placed on meeting those goals whichever way you can.  This leads to a flexible schedule and a lot of autonomy.

If you can be a self starter and not require constant management oversight, you would excel here.  

The company has grown very quickly in the past 3 years.  I guess that speaks to the importance of the work we do as there is demonstrated "need" for the work in Canada.

Co-workers were good and staff were kind. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
- Poor leadership
- Poor/minimal planning and project rollouts
- Poor/minimum support for department and support staff
- overworked support staff (HR, payroll) 
- leadership brags about calling subordinates at 3am on a Sunday and they pick up within 10 seconds!
- way too high workload

Stressful and overworked for most support staff
Underworld for some
No effort by management to assist staff in managing workload
No automation + poor tooling


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Back to back calls with mountains of on boarding and offloading tasks. Piles of laptop boxes all over my room. Shippers coming and going and laptops sloppily setup

Everything is stressful. This company will give you a paycheque in exchange for your mental health. Please look for employment elsewhere.

Toxic. Zero guidance. Appalling management.

Trying to make sure other people don’t blame you for their mistakes. Trying to justify something that went wrong wasn’t your fault. Getting constantly reprimanded by managers for their mistakes.

People at Mitacs make the organization special. If you work hard, are collaborative, and approach issues with diplomacy and tact, then Mitacs is a wonderful organization to work for. 

There are ample of opportunities to be involved in different initiatives that make impact. The HR team is amazing! The Senior Leadership is great. The strategic plan is bold and the frontline are full of passion. 

They often overlooks the dedication of its employees. Frequent maternity and paternity managers leaves, while important, sometimes highlight deeper issues with resource planning. they just give this right to managers to use maternity leave but they lay off their employees who wants to go on mat and pat leave. Additionally, the presence of numerous VPs and several questionable decisions—such as laying off valuable team members—have negatively impacted the department’s effectiveness.

the company has very low expectations of you and of themselves; management upholds an inexplicably broken set of procedures; most of the employees who are independent, talented, creative or who express themselves are silenced, gas-lighted or black-balled and leave in 3-6 months; people are fearful, timid, gossipy and do the minimum to maintain a barely functioning system 

Company has a great idea. No matter what I feel I was personally due, I really, and truly respect what they're trying to do.

There is definitely something awry with the way the organization is structured though; high turnover in personnel isn't an accident.

Either way, the people who work there are mostly hardworking, pleasant folks.

The purpose of the organization is excellent. However, the internal execution is abysmal—review times and policy inconsistencies are an issue of significant concern. I would generously estimate that the CEO has an approval rating of about 15%. Despite this, he remains relatively unconcerned and spends his time jetsetting worldwide rather than motivating and mobilizing his team to address strategic and operational challenges. 

Extremely valued organization that connect talented researchers to industry and help them build upon their career outside academia. However there is a need to have follow-up visits by MITACS business reps to make sure if the recipient is allowed to carry out research freely as per the approved research proposal and if he/she is getting the research grant as promised.
